SPEAKER_02Let's get this podcast started. MJ and night.
SPEAKER_06Welcome to the Pulp Culture Podcast, your weekly dose of all things pop culture, freshly squeezed for you. I'm Nate.
SPEAKER_07I'm MJ.
SPEAKER_06And we are recording from the Artemis 2 orbiting Earth right now.
SPEAKER_07That'd be cool. That'd be first podcast, right? Wow.
SPEAKER_06First podcast to be orbiting Earth. That'd be rad.
SPEAKER_07We've taken over while the astronauts have asleep.
SPEAKER_06Have you noticed something really interesting? A pop culture reference. I mean, I I mean, going to the moon is a pop culture reference in itself, but have you noticed the pop culture reference for what's happening with the Artemis 2?
SPEAKER_07Uh are we talking about the Nutella or the Sailor Moon plush?
SPEAKER_06Oh, I'm talking about, uh other than those two, I'm talking about that we have four astronauts.
SPEAKER_07Yep.
SPEAKER_06Three of them are men, and one of them's a woman. Yes. And one of them is named Reed. Oh. Oh. I haven't thought of that.
SPEAKER_07His last name's Reed.
SPEAKER_06Well, doesn't matter, does it?
SPEAKER_07And it's spelled differently.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, I know, but don't don't ruin it.
SPEAKER_07No, no. I'm just being a spelling.
SPEAKER_06We could potentially be having the fantastic four. Oh, please. Wouldn't that be great?
SPEAKER_07No.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, I haven't thought of that. Yeah, isn't that fantastic? Terrifying. Yeah. But interesting. Yeah. There you go.
SPEAKER_07So I hope they get home safely.
SPEAKER_06If we hear of any cosmic rays happening.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, no. Just do some science, come home.
SPEAKER_06Good luck.
SPEAKER_07Yeah.
SPEAKER_06That's all we can say. Yeah, that's cool. Yeah.
SPEAKER_07That is funny. No, but you know what? You know, the other pop culture. I mean, Natal Nutella's not really a pop culture reference, but we talk about snacks and stuff on this.
SPEAKER_06Well, it depends. If you're talking about Tok Tok, I'm sure there's plenty of uh plenty of items of Nutella related pop culture things on there.
SPEAKER_07I don't even know what that means. No, but there's there was the floating thing of Nutella. Yeah. And um in uh mission control in Houston, there's a a plush toy of uh a character called Artemis from Sailor Moon. I don't know Sailor Moon all that well, but yeah, Artemis is what watching over the um mission control. Okay. And one of the mission control guys was wearing a um a Sailor Moon lanyard.
SPEAKER_06Oh cool.
SPEAKER_07Um when they when they I think it was when they launched. Wow. But um Artemis little plus joy has been sitting there the whole time.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, that's fantastic.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, but no doubt will be until they get back safely.
SPEAKER_06Nice free advertising for sale on the moon.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, why not? Well it's around the world. I was saying to one of the boys at home today, I said the the the Venn diagram of like uh NASA people and nerds, it's it's pretty you know, there's they're pretty much the same thing.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, like you know, m most of the people that are either on the spaceship or or or definitely supporting the spaceship would be in the same sort of stuff, into the same sort of stuff that we are.
SPEAKER_06Oh yeah, absolutely, completely. Yeah, and um thanks for listening. Yeah, the Artemis 2.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, we're we're all being you're listening to us, we're watching you. Yeah.
SPEAKER_06I think it's a great yeah, I think that's that's a great compromise.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, why can't the world be more like that?
SPEAKER_06Yeah, absolutely. Uh let's uh let's keep going with uh the zest. All right, Mr. Trailers. We've got some trailers. We have we have got some trailers. Boy, we've got some trailers. Yeah, okay.
SPEAKER_07It feels like forever ago because they dropped what uh hours after we recorded our last episode. Yeah, they're correct.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, so we are a bit behind, however. Let's talk about those.
SPEAKER_07Well, what do you want to do when you want to do first? You want to do DC or M or Motu?
SPEAKER_06Let's go, let's go DC first, I think. Yeah, let's go DC first.
SPEAKER_07Right, so the Supergirl trailer.
SPEAKER_06Supergirl trailer.
SPEAKER_07What'd you think?
SPEAKER_06Near and dear to your heart. Uh yes, very much. Yeah, interesting. Um I I I look, I I just felt like it filled it filled a couple of the gaps of the teaser trailer.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, in in what way?
SPEAKER_06And a couple of the and and a couple of the like those little extra sort of you know, add-ons that we've sort of those spots, I think they call them. Yeah. Um those 15, 30 second spots. Yeah, so um snippets. Yeah, so I felt like they just pulled all of that together and then they just added a couple of extra things just to fill in the gap of what we can expect the trailer to be, well the film to be.
SPEAKER_08Yeah.
SPEAKER_06Um, again, very little we and we talked about this on the last episode about Krem of the Yellow Hills.
SPEAKER_08Yeah.
SPEAKER_06Um, and uh, you know, the audience isn't responding very well to him. We didn't really get to see a lot of him again in this trailer.
SPEAKER_07No, I think we saw enough.
SPEAKER_06Uh uh well, we saw his cronies, but not an well, we got sort of close-up of him, didn't we?
SPEAKER_07So, but we didn't really get to see him as a villain. The look of him is pretty full on. I don't think they're gonna put too much in the trailer, to be honest. Like they're gonna scare kids.
SPEAKER_06Yeah. Well, what's the what's the rating on this? Is it uh I'm guessing it'd be uh like a PG film or is it an M film? I mean it's interesting.
SPEAKER_07PG or M or in the Australian system.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, or PG 13 for the US.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, um no, I don't know. It's it's a bit hard to tell. Like some of the um material that's in the the source material, like the the story that's in the source material is pretty full on. Yeah, and even the stuff in the trailer, like I mean, it doesn't shy away from showing you what some of the emotional challenges are gonna be in the the the tr the the movie.
SPEAKER_06Yes, yes. Um and and I mean we don't want to spoil it because I mean we obviously know the reason why.
SPEAKER_07No, I mean perhaps we won't refer to that because uh there there will be people that won't want to watch the trailer, yeah. Um, and that's probably fair enough. But it's suffice to say that it's going to have some emotional beats.
SPEAKER_06Absolutely it is, yeah.
SPEAKER_07And and they re clearly refer to that in the trailer, which I actually quite liked. Like it lets people know what they're in for, what the emotional stakes are.
SPEAKER_06Yeah.
SPEAKER_07Um but yeah, I I thought the trailer looks great.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, I think it's fun. I I'm really looking forward to it. Um and I I think that it's gonna be I think it's gonna be a hit. I I really do. I think uh I think people are gonna wanna go and see it, see what it's about.
SPEAKER_07I'm sure like it's a it's a it's a big comic book movie with uh female um lead. Yeah. There's gonna be people that um throw negativity towards it, shall we say. Um but I'm not listening to them.
SPEAKER_06Well Wonder Woman Woman Wonder Woman, when the first one came out, that still went went in un you know scathed by, you know, uh fans. Yeah. Um but I thought that was a great film. Yeah. And I thought that it was a a great casting, and you know, until until you get them onto the big screen, we saw a very, you know, small glimpse of her at the end of Superman.
SPEAKER_08Yeah.
SPEAKER_06Um, and if you haven't seen it, then you know, check out Superman first. It's probably a good good idea to get a feel for what what to expect. Totally, it's great. And uh and but what we what we what we're going to see is uh is a lot more of why she is that way.
SPEAKER_08Yeah.
SPEAKER_06And I think that that's what's exciting. It it's something there's something about James Gunn, he loves um baby something. Like he's really sort of crafted this um this need for us to have a baby character with the likes of like baby Groot. Yeah. And then uh, you know, Star Wars has jumped on board with having you know Grogu as like you know Baby Oda. Yeah, now we're gonna get um baby crypto, you know, like as a pup. Yeah, and I mean that's just all all rounds of cuteness right there.
SPEAKER_07The merchandise's dream.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, um, yeah.
SPEAKER_07No, I'm I I really like that they're leaning into uh the differences between Superman and Supergirl. Definitely um because you know, back in the day it certainly wasn't always like that, you know. And I'm talking a long, long time ago, like back in the 50s and 60s, you know, Supergirl was uh like a psychic.
SPEAKER_08Yeah.
SPEAKER_07Um Supergirl these days is not like that. No. Um, and I really like that they're leaning into the um you know the the trauma of what it must be to be Cara. Um and yeah, I I like the epic scale that we got to see in the trailer. I think it's something we have that uh we have in common with the other trailer we're gonna talk about. Yeah um I really love that it looks so huge. Um I've heard people talk uh refer to it uh as looking like Guardians of the Galaxy, and I think that that's uh fair and accurate. Um and I also don't think it's a bad thing. Um I I think it I think it looks like it's uh you know a a big spacefaring adventure.
SPEAKER_06Yeah. It's funny you should say that because the next trailer that we're gonna talk about uh they've already had some um some screenings with critics. Okay. And uh they're referring that to as a Guardians of the Galaxy style film, yeah. Which is really interesting. Um because that's more of a group team thing. Um the good thing is one thing I really enjoyed about the Supergirl trailer too is that we saw more of Lobo and what to expect that dynamic between the two of them, yeah, and how they're gonna play off each other.
SPEAKER_08Yeah.
SPEAKER_06Um, and we got to see him in action a little bit more too, which is yeah, which I think is gonna be great.
SPEAKER_07It had sort of a sibling rivalry type to it, didn't it? Like they were taking the piss out of each other. Yeah, um, and I thought that looked like fun, but it was it was it was good to hear Lobo talk a bit more. Um, I think we got uh a glimpse of how um uh Jason Momoa's delivery as Lobo is gonna be different to his delivery as Aquaman. Yes. Um and I thought that was quite fun. Yeah, um I I I think that'll fit the character really well. Um but yeah, in in I mean in general, I'm just as excited. No, I'm more excited than I was before. Um I think it's gonna be really great, and as you said, I think it's really gonna resonate with people. Um and I think that the message in this one is going to be perhaps as um pertinent as the one that we got from Superman. Yes, yeah. Um, you know, the message from Superman was um that you know kindness is punk rock, kindness is a superpower, and kindness is um uh when when it's a when it's a focus, it can be a really powerful thing. Yeah. Um and in this one, I think that um the the message is gonna be along the lines of you know, you don't have to be perfect um to be great.
SPEAKER_06It's okay to be messy.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, um, and I'm really excited about that. I think that's a really good message for our times.
SPEAKER_06Messy is punk rock.
SPEAKER_07Messy, but punk rock is messy. Yeah yes, it is. As it should be.
SPEAKER_06Especially if you're on the on in the in the mosh area. So uh that's definitely messy.
SPEAKER_07I've rarely ventured into those areas, and any time that I have I've regretted it.
SPEAKER_06I'm happy to be a bystander. Yeah.
SPEAKER_07No, I'm way too old for that now.
SPEAKER_06So we got uh we got uh Motu as the second trailer. Masters of the universe, masters of the universe, yeah. And what did you think? Yeah, and I like 10-year-old me was just fanboying out to this, it was everything I wanted and more.
SPEAKER_08Yeah.
SPEAKER_06Um, I we got a really good look at Skeletor.
SPEAKER_08Yeah.
SPEAKER_06Uh, you know, there's always concerns about anything that Jared Leto is attached to, yeah, because he's he just unfortunately just doesn't have the same touch when he when he goes into films um at uh of of recent times. Yeah. Um but I think that it's it's a really interesting take. He's got a sort of a British accent-ish sort of um to it.
SPEAKER_07I think there's gonna be people that won't know it's him even after the film's finished.
SPEAKER_06No, well, I mean they've done a really good job of of um you know that that sort of CGI over his face. Yeah, he looks great. Um I know that that part of it is prosthetic, and then they've sort of just enhanced um that prosthetic on his face. So it's it looks good. I I I think that the action is is great. Um it it feels you know, like I said, it feels like a bit of a Guardians of the Galaxy esque type sort of adventure. Yeah, I can see that. Where we've got a team um that you know might not necessarily work well together, but in the end they achieve their goal. Yeah, uh, we very very well building as well. We we see a lot of what's going on in Eternia, and and we spoke about this um quite a number of episodes ago, where I was saying like my prediction is that he's been sent away and he's got to come back to save Eternia. Yeah, and and that gave us exactly that. You know, he he is coming back to obviously rescue his parents, his friends that he didn't know that he had or forgotten about. Yeah um and um and he's ready to you know uh join the mantle as a master of the universe.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, well I mean T Tela sort of says something about you know, it hasn't been the same since you left. Right. Um so yeah, it implies that that's probably the reason that he's back is to to try and save the situation.
SPEAKER_06And in the Masters of the Universe um uh, you know, sort of stories, um, there's always been a protector of Eternal, right? So before He-Man there was somebody else, before them there was somebody else. Yeah, yeah. There was hero and you know, etc. etc. And so what and and so I think that that's it's that that that balance, that balance of having a having uh a sorceress and a and a and a master of the universe, you know, and and what one without the other doesn't work.
SPEAKER_07And so uh what's it called in construction of you know arches and keystone. Yeah, like the keystone that holds everything together.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, yeah, that's right. That's right.
SPEAKER_07So which I think for you know, with Castle Grey Skull is uh uh an interesting um way to think of it.
SPEAKER_06Well it it needs one, you know, essentially it needs the sorceress to um to protect the power, yeah, and then and then it needs He-Man to to use that power when when required for good. Yeah, and so so one without the other, you can protect all the power you like, but you if you can't wield it, then what do you do with it? You know, and so if he-Man's not around, then what do you do? You know, and so the so the obviously skeletal has taken advantage of that, and um, but we saw a really great um, you know, a lot of good cameos of those characters that we talked about in last episode. Yeah. Uh, and uh I think that it's gonna be a really fun, interesting um film to watch.
SPEAKER_07I think it was uh I felt a bit silly, but um there was one shot in uh dungeon. Yes, and it's just like this one sort of transition shot between one sort of key scene and another. But it was what got me the most excited because there was a collection of characters in there that it was like all of my action figures in together. It was like I don't know whether it was I think it was Ran Man and Mechanek and um you know uh Pisto Yeah and they were all there together, yeah. And it wasn't, you know, anything like a spectacular shot, but it was just like um They were just sort of all with the background just sort of all looming and glooming around. Yeah, it was like it was like you know, they were all sitting there in the toy box waiting for us to play with them. But um yeah, no, I I I think it looks uh amazing. I was blown away by the trailer.
SPEAKER_06What's your thoughts? And and this is the this is the only sort of criticism that I've sort of read about so far when it comes to that trailer, is is that there's been no appearance of Orco in this at all. So for those of you who might not know, Orco is a um he's kind of the the the like the bat mite or the the you know uh he's kind of he's kind of sort of the bumbling sort of sorcerer that um or or wizard's apprentice uh that um you know he's he's he's not great with with magic, but uh he does his best to in the situation.
SPEAKER_07I overused this reference recently, but it's um he's like the 3PO in R2. Yeah, yeah. He's the c he's the co he's the comic relief. Yeah, he's sort of the the the bumbling character in the background that takes the edge off the drama. Yeah. Uh not takes the edge off the drama, but takes the edge off the tension. Yeah. Um yeah, no, we haven't seen him yet, but I imagine there's probably quite a bit we haven't seen.
SPEAKER_06I wonder, and and again, I wonder whether it's just a big reveal that we'll wait for.
SPEAKER_08Yeah.
SPEAKER_06Um, I I I you know you've got to be careful because you know, Master of the Universe is has a a large amount of characters. Um, and so you obviously want to give you and and it's like a Marvel film, right? You know, like an Endgame or Infinity War or something like that.
SPEAKER_08Yeah.
SPEAKER_06You want to give those characters their their time in the sun, yeah, but you don't want them to sort of overshadow anything else. And so if you're gonna have someone like if you've left Orco out of the trailer, you obviously have to be careful that you don't want him to overshadow the rest of the um the rest of the film.
SPEAKER_07No, not at all. I I I really think that um what they're trying to do is show us that they're taking these characters seriously um and that it this is going to be a as m as much fun as it's gonna be, yes, as camp as it's gonna be, I think they're trying to show us that they're taking this uh property and this story seriously. Absolutely. And I think that perhaps putting Orco into the trailers um wouldn't necessarily send that message to especially non-Masters of the Universe people. Like we're we're like we're in.
SPEAKER_06Yeah.
SPEAKER_07You know, we're we're all in. Yeah, we're but but but um you know for other people I think perhaps they think maybe that might give it the wrong impression. Um so uh I don't think there's any harm in um keeping Orco a secret until we get into the theaters.
SPEAKER_06We could also get um uh like they did with the Super Mario Brothers movie, yeah, where we didn't uh where we didn't get uh Yoshi in the first one, yeah, even though there was that expectation of him to be there.
SPEAKER_08Yeah.
SPEAKER_06Um and then we at the very end of the the film we got to see a sort of a glimpse.
SPEAKER_07Yeah.
SPEAKER_06Um, and then we get him in this in this newer one.
SPEAKER_07Maybe Orco's being held prisoner by Skeletor.
SPEAKER_06Or or or the horde, right? He comes from that. So so there's there's all sorts of um opportunities to introduce him in in the right way.
SPEAKER_07I do think there's I mean, there's quite a lot of stuff that we haven't seen in the trailer. Like we saw um uh uh what's sorceress's other name? Zora.
SPEAKER_08Zora.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, yeah. Like we've we've seen that form of her, but we haven't actually seen the sorceress herself yet, have we?
SPEAKER_06No, we didn't. They they've left that out. There is uh if you want to go and search for her um on online, um there are images of concept art. Yeah, yeah. There's also um uh Unocards of all things uh have have there's a a unocard set for the new Master of the Universe movie, and on those playing cards are the characters.
SPEAKER_07That actually excites me quite a lot.
SPEAKER_06And so that's and so that's leaked. Uh and so that well, I don't know if it's leaked, but yeah, it's definitely out there. The artwork for that is is definitely out there. So you can uh they're quite good images, actually. Yeah, they're fantastic. I've seen some of those, they're good for good photos. They're just fantastic characters. And there's a lot of the uh collectible uh action figures which are starting to come out now. Yeah, um, they haven't hit uh shelves shelves yet, uh, but I would say in the next four weeks we'll probably be, you know, sort of featuring them on the show because we've I've definitely gone out and bought them. Um you've already you've already bought some. I I I've uh I'm already no, not yet. No, no. But I'm I'm I'm waiting for them to hit the shelves.
SPEAKER_07I'm dying for some of those little mighty masters we've been talking about.
SPEAKER_06I I think it's every day that I'm checking all my uh all all my usual places.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, it's affecting my Google algorithm as well.
SPEAKER_06And I still haven't seen any that have been released yet. So there's been a very small, um, a small amount that's been released in the US, and there was some in New Zealand of all places, but uh but all our all our usual places that we would normally get our collectibles from are definitely not stocking them as of yet.
SPEAKER_07Oh well, let me know if you find them and I'll do the same with you.
SPEAKER_06For sure. For sure. And listeners, if you see any Mighty Masters, uh if they drop, then please let us know on our socials. We would love to know where we can get them from.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, and we'd we'd also love to say that that's uh so that we can let everybody else know and it's for the greater good. Yes, but it is not. It's because we want them ourselves.
SPEAKER_06It's the greater good for us.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, yeah. Try not to be selfish, but uh in in this case I'm gonna make an exception.
SPEAKER_06Hands down wearing a selfish t-shirt.
SPEAKER_07Yeah.
SPEAKER_06Uh any other trailers?
SPEAKER_07Uh no, no, I'd not not not to speak of. Um, but those two are a bit of a hard act to follow, aren't they?
SPEAKER_06Yeah. Well, I I think I've got uh I think I can I can top that with some news.
SPEAKER_07Okay.
SPEAKER_06Uh so we've been sort of bantering backwards and forwards for quite most of the most of our podcast episodes regarding uh the Avengers Doomsday and also June 3.
SPEAKER_07Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_06Um and uh I put it out there and I said dollars for donuts, one of them are gonna move.
SPEAKER_08Yeah.
SPEAKER_06Right, here we go. Marvel's Avengers Doomsday is moving to December 11th uh to have IMAX cinema availability. Oh, they bought. They've bought. So it's it's it's it's it's a done deal. So it's it's hit all all the all the news outlets. Okay. Um, this is not just an idle rumor, this is pretty, pretty serious business. Okay. Um no big of Announcement has been made yet.
SPEAKER_07Yeah.
SPEAKER_06If you haven't read this, then you've heard it here first, and you're welcome.
SPEAKER_07I haven't heard this. I've had my my eyes on the moon.
SPEAKER_06This was done at time of recording. This was I got this about 30 minutes prior to recording. So this is huge news. This is massive, massive news. So I've saved buying a box of donuts for you.
SPEAKER_07My feed was all uh air floating Nutella jars.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, right.
SPEAKER_07So no, I'm not surprised I missed this.
SPEAKER_06But uh yeah, this is your donuts, is that what it is? No, no, no, no. It was my it was my bet towards you, so it's all good. Um you would never you would never get it. I I look honestly, I still thought I was gonna be the one that was going to donuts, but uh it's uh this is this is huge.
SPEAKER_07I don't need an excuse to buy donuts, so that's fine.
SPEAKER_06Uh stay tuned, listeners, for donut episode.
SPEAKER_07So so re refresh my memory. When so what's coming out when?
SPEAKER_06Okay, so we've got uh so we'll have doomsday coming out first on the on the 11th, yeah. And then the following week, which is the I think it's the 18th, okay, is June uh three. Right. So it's a week apart, yeah, gives it a lot of breathing room, allows for Doomsday to make as much bank as it possibly can in that first week. The interesting thing is it's going up against Jumanji 3. So poor Jumanji 3 is gonna get throttled, I think. Um it's not it's not looking good for Jumanji 3. They were they were the ones that were sort of um out in front and feeling pretty confident that no one was gonna go up against them. Yeah, and um so now they're in they're in sort of a bit of a pickle.
SPEAKER_08Yeah.
SPEAKER_06Uh I I do wonder whether they'll shift uh forward a week. Um But yeah, scheduling seems to be changing quite rapidly at the moment with uh with this announce, well, with this rumor.
SPEAKER_08Yeah.
SPEAKER_06Um, but yeah, these these types of rumors, if if all the if all the news outlets are on it, then I would say it's it's pretty much you know guaranteed that this is going to be going to be happening. Interesting. Yeah, absolutely. And and we haven't got another, we haven't got a full trailer yet. Yeah. And there was talk of a trailer that that's going to come out in the next couple of weeks. Okay. And so if that's the case, that's probably why they've been holding off on the trailer, is so that they can give a firm date announcement from the trailer.
SPEAKER_08Yeah.
SPEAKER_06Uh so yeah, uh that's that's huge news. I don't know if that tops the trailers that we watched, but it's pretty right, it's right up there, right?
SPEAKER_07I have a prediction that it means nothing, really. Um Disney uh owns Marvel. Marvel uh Disney also owns ESPN. Yes. The NBA playoffs start in, I think two weeks. Yep. Um I'm pretty predicting that it will be some sort of um lead up lead up and some trailer because that I'm sure that um the NBA and and Marvel have done stuff before, yes, and pretty pretty uh sure they've done them through the the playoffs too. Yes. Um so that's my prediction. Yeah, well it's a it's and I'll let you know because I'll be watching the playoffs.
SPEAKER_06It's a it's a good one. It's it's definitely a good one. And um uh look, I like I said, this has only just just dropped for us. Um and by the time you obviously will be listening to that, uh, to this listeners, that it's um it's it's old news, but uh yeah, this is this is humongous news. This doesn't happen a lot when a when a large uh film like this shifts its date.
SPEAKER_08Yeah.
SPEAKER_06Um I I can only think of a handful that have have done that over probably 30 years. Yeah. Um and so yeah, this is this is this is pretty big news, and that what that's showing is is that I I don't think that Marvel were confident going up against um uh going up against June 3 without having IMAX cinemas as part of that um that rotation.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, it'd be interesting to know what all the the thought processes are are behind it, but I mean it doesn't really bother me.
SPEAKER_06No, no, no, no. Well, I mean, you know, there was there was no IMAX available for um Marvel Doomsday. Uh sorry, for um uh Avengers Doomsday.
SPEAKER_07It's an interesting sort of game of chicken between the studios, isn't it?
SPEAKER_06Yeah, though I think they were just playing each other and waiting each other out and seeing whether and then uh uh I think with June 3 announcing that they have secured all IMAX cinemas around the world um uh for that original uh for that first week of screening, yeah. I think that was enough to for Marvel to go, okay, we're gonna pull back and you know, we're gonna regroup and let's see if we can get the IMAX cinemas a week before. Jumanji 3 are not um are not hooked for IMAX for obvious reasons. And um and so that's I think they just saw the window and they've just jumped right through it.
SPEAKER_07I think um it's gonna be really interesting to uh to see uh what the um sessions look like in IMAX for June when it finally comes out a week after Avengers. Yeah. Because Avengers surely I mean it'll still be selling like they could still sell out IMAX a week after its release. They could.
SPEAKER_06Um but they won't they won't have that opportunity in IMAX because June 3 will have.
SPEAKER_07No, so they're just gonna have to make the most of that week.
SPEAKER_06That's right. And so it's a it's it's a it's a big week, it's leading up to Christmas holidays. Um so I I I I think um I think it's a it's a a really smart move, it's a good business move, uh, and it gives breathing space for both films to you know have their opportunity to shine. So we'll we'll be talking about it as as we always do. Um but yeah, big news, um, awesome news.
SPEAKER_07Well, I was always gonna see Avengers first anyway, so it doesn't make a lot of difference to me.
SPEAKER_06Well, you will be now because it'll be a week earlier. So it's all good. I will. It is all good. Yeah. Uh you got any news?
SPEAKER_07Uh yeah, I did have some more news. Yeah. Uh this is on the other side of the comic book aisle. Um, but the Batman 2 um is uh due to start shoot shooting roundabout now, maybe in the next week. Yeah, absolutely. That's some I thought that was really good news.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, Andy Circus is um I think he's filming later. Yeah. Um he's obviously doing some other projects at the moment.
SPEAKER_08Yeah.
SPEAKER_06Uh and he's doing a uh a bit of a junket uh in regarding uh was it Watership Down? Is that the is that the film that he's done the animated series?
SPEAKER_07Yeah, I think so.
SPEAKER_06I think that's what it is. Yeah. Um and so he sort of came out and said that he was uh filming later.
SPEAKER_07Yeah.
SPEAKER_06Um so it doesn't sound like he's got a huge part in the in the film.
SPEAKER_07No, well and unless they've really you know ramped up his his character for the second one, um he's not gonna be in it. No uh heaps, you wouldn't imagine. But um yeah, no, I'm just really excited that they're they're moving towards uh filming because I I definitely want to see a continuation of that Matt Reeves Batman universe.
SPEAKER_06And Sebastian Stan has has definitely been um I think so, yeah. Yeah, he's definitely he's definitely on board. That news feels like forever again.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, I know. Um yeah, but but I believe so. I believe he's locked in as uh as Harvey Dent, isn't he?
SPEAKER_06Yes, yes, which is which is great. So it'll be interesting to see how what his take on Harvey Dent. Yeah, what that looks like, yeah. Uh and whether we do get a a two-face or whether we just get a Harvey Dent based on this. It seems like this film is going to be I don't know if it's loosely based or it's inspired by the long Halloween, yeah. So, and what that looks like with the characters that are involved and um you know what we what we actually get.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, it's um like Two Faces is probably my favorite Batman villain. No, he is my favourite Batman villain. Yeah, I love it. I love the the duality of Two Face and just the binary nature of the conflict within Harvey Dent. Yeah. Um the casting of Sebastian Stan as Harvey Dent. I don't care if we don't see Too Faced. No, because um, you know, Harvey Dent's an interesting character enough as it is. Sebastian Stan is a great watchable actor. Yeah. Um if if all we get in this one is him as Harvey Dent, then uh that's fine with me.
SPEAKER_06Well we got a we we essentially got a two-face with uh Winter Soldier, didn't we? Because we got the Winter Soldier and we got Bucky Barr. Yeah, a little bit. So, you know, we've seen the black and the white of of him.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, well it it it plays duality well, yeah.
SPEAKER_06So so even if we we don't uh there may be some you know mental health issues there that uh can you know sway a little bit, and I think it'd be quite interesting to see that you know sort of play out.
SPEAKER_07In a lot of other versions of um Harvey's character in comics, but also in things like I'm thinking um Kate Crusader. Yep. Um we get to see that you know Harvey it wasn't it isn't just the I was gonna say accident, but the violent act that that scars him, yeah, that that um turns him towards evil. Like he's always got a bit of um temptation towards the dark side going on, yeah. Um even before all of that. And I think it'd be fun to see um them play with that a bit, particularly if um you know some of my wildest dreams come true and and uh the the the sequel on HBO Max to the Penguin series is perhaps a two-faced one.
SPEAKER_06Oh that'd be amazing.
SPEAKER_07That'd be wonderful. And so if all we get, yeah, as I say, if if all we get in the Batman Part 2 is is is Harvey, yeah. Um and then perhaps you know two-faced right at the end, yeah, then that's fine with me because if they continue this um Matt Reeves Batman universe going the way that I hope they do, yeah, um, then you know we could get some real uh you know quality content um down the track.
SPEAKER_06Definitely. Uh going back to Marvel, yeah. Uh big news uh for regarding Black Panther 3. Okay. Uh so obviously no date has been set yet for when they start filming. Yep. Um we know uh that we have you know um the the usual crew are back, um and uh Namor is going to be part of that, okay. Uh which is which is fantastic. We are getting a little bit of the storyline on what to expect. Yeah. Um so it will feature a war between Wakondans and aliens. Okay. Um and so the alien threat is heading for Wakanda, yeah. Um, and we'll set up a massive space-related crisis. Oh, interesting. Um, there's talk uh that the Savage Land could also be introduced. Yeah, nice. Um with uh T'Challa set to meet uh Kazar. Now this is interesting because they mentioned T'Challa. Yeah now I wonder if it's going back to what you were talking about where um T'Challa has a son, and we have Tata well, it's T'Cala Jr.
SPEAKER_08T'Cala Jr., yeah.
SPEAKER_06Um so um but interesting that's that's a really interesting side part with uh Kazar. Yeah, yeah. So um I I I I like him as a I like Kazar and I like this I love the storyline of Savage Land.
SPEAKER_07I love the Savage Land, yeah.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, I think it's wild. So but uh yeah, I I I I I would love to see them sort of explore that yeah, that that option.
SPEAKER_07I wonder what the alien threat would be.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, I know, right? So I don't I don't know what this is. I don't know what this means. It's interesting to see um whether it's scrolls or whether it's or the she oh for the X-Men. Yeah. Oh, that would oh, that's a good one.
SPEAKER_07Well, we haven't seen them in um the MCU yet, have we?
SPEAKER_06That'd be a lead up, wouldn't it?
SPEAKER_07Well, it'd be an interesting way to tie it back to um the X-Men. Have Storm appear. Yeah. But the I mean the X-Men, a lot of X-Men stories um uh take place in the Savage Land. Yes. Um yeah, who knows?
SPEAKER_06Yeah, well you heard it here first if it if it is the Shi are. Yep.
SPEAKER_07No, I'm not not writing the script, but happy to chip in.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, absolutely. Uh keeping on with Marvel news, I don't know too sure if you've seen the images, but uh we have firm confirmation uh that we are having two major players back in Daredevil season three.
SPEAKER_07Yes, I have seen a picture, which I believe was of um Mike Coulter and Finn Jones on the set.
SPEAKER_06On the set. Or on the way between sets wearing sort of these hooded sort of cloaks trying to stay out of, you know, um shot.
SPEAKER_08Yeah.
SPEAKER_06But it was very obvious that um I think Finn Jones lifted his head at one stage, so you could see him wearing, you know, you could see his face, you could see partially a bit of green and yellow.
SPEAKER_07But the reports are basically saying that they're present on set for Daredevil season three, yeah, leading to us, you know, leading us to assume that the defenders' characters are all gonna be back.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, which is great.
SPEAKER_07I think it's awesome. Yeah. Especially for um, I mean, I I really like Luke Cage. Yeah, um, I really liked the show. I really liked uh Mike Colter's characterization of him. Yeah, um, but uh I'm most excited for Finn Jones, uh the actor, but also the the character of um uh Iron Fist. Oh Iron Fist. Yeah, um, because yeah, I mean it copped a lot of flack from that first series. Um and I find it difficult sometimes to to defend it. Um, as I've said before. Yeah. You know, too much stuff in boardrooms, yeah. Um not enough kung fu. Yeah. Um so yeah, I I'm really excited at the prospect of um us getting some some iron fist uh featuring um Finn Jones that that that really kicks us.
SPEAKER_06And I wonder whether we're gonna get whether we're gonna see whether because of this we're gonna see him a little bit more in the MCU. Um you know, possibility it could be in Shang Chi. So you know, that'd be that'd be great if that's that that's the what what's on the horizon.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, I'd be stunned if they um did all of this and brought them back, not to then either disperse them through different stories in the MCU. Like we've already seen you know Matt Murdoch in She-Hulk, and we've seen him in Spider-Man, um, catching bricks for coming through windows and stuff, being an excellent lawyer. Um, yeah, I I'd be surprised if uh that that this doesn't uh lead to these characters showing up in other stories.
SPEAKER_06Spin-off series called Hero Inc.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, that'd be cool. Well, Power Man and Ironfist.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, absolutely, wouldn't that be right?
SPEAKER_07It'd be awesome. Yeah, no, I'm I'm I'm really pumped because um I've I've still got a lot of affection for all of the Netflix shows, Iron Fist included. Um I thought they were great, you know. Daredevil and Jessica Jones were my favorites, but I really love Luke Cage and I really enjoyed um uh some of the acting performances in particular that we got out of out of the Iron Fist cast.
SPEAKER_04Definitely.
SPEAKER_07Um so I I I would love to see them all um back in one capacity or another. Um I can't it's i I keep marveling, but I keep I I do. I keep I keep marvelling at the world in which we exist right now. Like the fact that we've got a daredevil show back, like I know we we we almost take it for granted, but when when you think about exactly what what that means, like it's it's like we live in unprecedented times. Yeah, you know, the fact that we've got a a second show with that character played by the same actor, featuring so many of the other actors from the original show, ten years after the the original was on, is just um it's amazing to me.
SPEAKER_06It's a nerd's paradise, right? It really is.
SPEAKER_07Like you know, we we we we we really are spoiled, and I think a lot a lot of people take it for granted to to a ridiculous extent sometimes. And I think we just need to um sort of sit back and appreciate the not just the the situation we're in, but the possibility of it. Yeah, like the the the possibility of you know where all of this could go. Yes. Um, you know, it's the stuff of of dreams. Nerd dreams. Love it.
SPEAKER_06Uh talking about nerd dreams, the Schwartz Awakens. Yes. With Spaceballs 2 announcing release date, April 23, 2027. Where do I buy my tickets? Yeah, so get excited. There's been no announcement of what it's going to be called yet. Um but it has.
SPEAKER_07It was in the first movie. What was it called? The search for more money. It'll be interesting. If it's not called Spaceballs 2, the Search for More Money, or the Quest for More Money, or whatever it was, I'm gonna be a bit disappointed.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, well we'll have to wait and see. They've kept that one quiet, they're just referring to it as Spaceballs 2.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, I'll be in Josh Dad, Josh Gad's comments.
SPEAKER_06But uh yeah, that's been announced for April 23, 2027. So cannot wait. Looking forward to having all those characters back and then some.
SPEAKER_08Yeah.
SPEAKER_06Um by the time it comes out, Mel Blank will be uh Mel Blank, uh Mel Brooks will be Mel Brown, rest in peace. Uh Mel Brooks will be 100. Um so that's a fair effort.
SPEAKER_07So amazing.
SPEAKER_06I really hope he makes it to 100 so he can see see it, you know, completed.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, I hope he does too. And and you know, uh we you know we don't see his day to day, but we've seen no signs of him slowing down. So um let's hope let's hope that he's there.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, let's we we we need more yogurt in our lives. So totally uh talking about release dates, uh Gremlin's three Little Monsters uh is scheduled for November 2027. Wow. So that's next year. So um looking forward to that one as well.
SPEAKER_07But we haven't got any news about um human casts, no, no human cast yet.
SPEAKER_06They've got a release date, it's pretty firm. They've they've attached the working title, which is uh Gremlin's three little monsters. Okay. It doesn't necessarily mean that it's going to be um the Mod Low babies. Yeah. They're already babies. Doesn't mean we're gonna get uh uh you know that to be the title. I mean they do have a lot of working titles. Yeah. Um we had Revenge of the Jedi um as one of those, um, and then they changed it like weeks before. Yeah. Um yeah, if you ever had a an action figure that that had Revenge of the Jedi in it as the as the card, the backer card, yeah, that's worth a fortune because they had to switch all those out really quickly and change it to um Return of the Jedi.
SPEAKER_08Yeah.
SPEAKER_06So yeah, working title at this stage, looking forward to it. It's next year.
SPEAKER_07Get excited. Yeah, bring it on. I love it.
SPEAKER_06I love me some gremlins and practical effects as well.
SPEAKER_07So exciting.
SPEAKER_06We'll talk about this more uh in uh the review, um, but Darth Maul season two um has been uh greenlit.
SPEAKER_07Okay, interesting. I hadn't heard that.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, I thought it was going to be a one and done uh as a season, uh, and it was sort of filling in the gaps between sort of clone wars and uh rebels.
SPEAKER_07It sounds like everybody's pretty pleased with it as a series.
SPEAKER_06Oh, I mean, we'll we'll talk about it more uh in the review. Yeah, of course. Um but yeah, I I I I I think it would be remiss of me not to mention uh that that it has been picked up for season two. No, that's that's great news.
SPEAKER_07I think that's great news as well. I that that had escaped me, so I'm really pleased to hear that.
SPEAKER_06Um have you got any other news? No, no, that's it for me this week. Alright, so let's get into the weird files. Alright, so I'm gonna I'm gonna give you dealer's choice this week. Okay.
SPEAKER_07That'd love you putting it back on me.
SPEAKER_06Because uh I've got I I just you know, I've got three stories in the uh in the in the word in the weird files.
SPEAKER_07And and so uh if if I pick one, we'll never hear from the other two ever again.
SPEAKER_06No, we will, but I I just wanted to give give dealers choice. I think that's uh that's only fair. Um so I'll I'll give you I'll give you the three that I have, and then you can you can um uh you know muddle over which one you think is uh is best for me to tell you about.
SPEAKER_07How exciting in quotation marks.
SPEAKER_06Yeah. So I'll give you the three headlines. We've got Disguised as Sheep, we have Tupperware Ghost, or we have Frozen Squirrel. So uh I'll just read those to you again. Um and we've got some Jeopardy music playing while you think about that. Okay. We've got Disguised as Sheep, Tupperware Ghost, or Frozen Squirrel.
SPEAKER_07Okay, well the last one does not sound nice. So I'm gonna put that off for a little bit. Okay. Um I'm gonna go with the sheep one.
SPEAKER_06Disguised as sheep.
SPEAKER_07Yeah.
SPEAKER_06Okay, here we go. Get strap yourselves in, uh, listeners. Um, this is great. So three men have been arrested in Algeria for attempting to enter Spain disguised as sheep. Okay. Uh authorities in Algeria have reported an unusual attempted border crossing involving three men who allegedly disguised themselves as sheep in an effort to enter Spain. I'm just showing MJ the picture of our uh alleged.
SPEAKER_07My word. That is problematic.
SPEAKER_06And we will uh we'll post this on the on our socials. According to officials, the individuals covered themselves in cotton padding, altered their appearance, and concealed themselves among livestock being transported to uh being transported towards the border. The attempt was uncovered when officers observed irregular movement with the flock and stopped the vehicle for inspection. They're probably scrolling on their phones. Upon examination, authorities determined that the supposed animals were in fact human. All three men were arrested, and officials described the case as one of the most unconventional and high-risk smuggling attempts encountered in recent years.
SPEAKER_07Any chance of me seeing that picture again?
SPEAKER_06Yeah, absolutely. I'll just show you again. There's a close-up for you there, MJ.
SPEAKER_07You know what? They've got bigger problems because they are going to get sued by Armin animation.
SPEAKER_06They look a bit like Sean the Sheep, don't they?
SPEAKER_07They look like Timmy Time.
SPEAKER_06Maybe we'll put it up. Who wore it better?
SPEAKER_07No, uh listen, I'm telling you this much. You'll have to Google that one because we are not putting that in our socials.
SPEAKER_06Based on um how they've covered themselves.
SPEAKER_07Yes.
SPEAKER_06Right? I don't think it's for that reason. I think they're just trying to be sheep.
SPEAKER_07No, I get that, but we're not endorsing. We're not endorsing that behaviour in any way.
SPEAKER_06But uh yeah, interesting, interesting way to cross the border.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, very yes, interesting.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, so uh there you go. There's uh another weird files for you.
SPEAKER_07I'm dying to know what the um unusual behaviour that that's um tipped off authorities was.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, right. It's uh scrolling their phones. Well, I mean, they obviously didn't do a very good job of pretending to be sheep.
SPEAKER_07One of them opened a can of coke. What do you reckon? What else could it have been?
SPEAKER_06I don't know. Maybe they were asleep snoring.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, reading reading the Financial Times. Well, sheep probably snore.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, well, I I don't know. It's like dog snores. Yeah, but I don't know if they if they snore like humans, I don't know. How would you know what the irregular behavior of sheep is?
SPEAKER_07Well then okay. I'll refer you back to my previous comments. They're not gonna be scrolling phones, they're not gonna be reading the Financial Times. Uh interesting.
SPEAKER_06Yep, so there's your dealer's choice, uh listeners. That's great.
SPEAKER_07Uh thanks to MJ. Yeah, can we get that five minutes back?
SPEAKER_06Uh definitely not. Uh, but we've got topware ghost and frozen squirrel to look forward to in weeks to come. Okay.
SPEAKER_07Uh I'll run interference as much as I can, listeners.
SPEAKER_06And that's the weird files right there for you. Uh, before we get into the aisle, let's get into the tomb. All right. What have we got buried this week? Uh buried, it's it's surfaced. Uh, Brenda Fraser has uh stunned fans wearing the Rick O'Connell costume.
SPEAKER_04Okay.
SPEAKER_06Uh at a screening of the Mummy Double Feature for the Mummy 2 anniversary.
SPEAKER_07Oh, how amazing would that be?
SPEAKER_06Yeah, so they had just they'd they'd done a double feature in London and uh sure enough they made the announcement and he came out in all glory and did a QA with uh with the audience.
SPEAKER_07He's such a good sport.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, how great's that. Yeah so um I I think that's really really um you know admirable of him. I think it's a great promotion that shows that he loves the property that he's um you know that's helped him with his career.
SPEAKER_07It's glad to see it's great to see that he's excited.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, absolutely. So um so yeah, I you know I I I think we'll be having you know a lot more um mummy news coming up. Yeah, um, but I I think this is definitely related uh to to the tomb.
SPEAKER_07Any um uh uh anniversary screenings of George of the Jungle or Incino Man coming up? Definitely not because that'd be great to see him show up in in in costume for those for George, yeah.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, or Inceno Man with the hair and yeah, yeah, yeah. Polly Polly Shaw is Polly Shaw coming up.
SPEAKER_07Rock up with um uh Sean Sean Aston and Katie Quan. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, they could all rock up in their old retro costumes.
SPEAKER_06Oh, that'd be awesome. Yeah, don't think they've done I don't think they've uh dated very well, but uh you know that's the fun of it. All right, uh why don't we get into the aisle? Yes.
SPEAKER_00Next Saturday, blast up into adventure with the superpowers team. Join Superman, Pirestorm and Cyborg as they battle galactic monsters. The brand new adventures of the superpowers team. Next Saturday.
SPEAKER_06Alright, MJ, what have you been reading uh this week?
SPEAKER_07Uh bits and pieces of quite a bit. Um I've have have you read Comics the Magazine yet?
SPEAKER_06No, no, I have not.
SPEAKER_07I'm really enjoying it.
SPEAKER_06Mr. Mr. Viral wearing uh you know, reading his comic, and comics picked you up and posted it all over the place. Yep, even on the TikTok, even on the TikToks.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, even the TikToks. Yep, yep. Check out the TikToks.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, absolutely.
SPEAKER_07Um, you know, I'm really enjoying Comics the Magazine. The second issue came out.
SPEAKER_06Does it feel like Wizard? The old Wizard magazine. A little bit.
SPEAKER_07I never read Wizard Heaps. Oh, I loved Wizard magazine. Yeah, but I didn't have all that much money to spend on that stuff back then. Yeah, right. Wizard was expensive, wasn't it? Uh I think it was about five or six bucks at the time. Okay. Yeah, well. There was money I couldn't have spent spending on comics. Well, this is true. Um, no, I never read Heaps of Wizard. Um, so I I don't really know. But I'm enjoying the format of of this magazine. Um the second issue has just come out. The first one was um uh headlined by uh absolute Batman and an interview with the creative team behind that. Yep, and the second one is um uh the cover is Battle Beast from the Invincible Universe, and so obviously the um uh interview interviewees are um uh Robert Kirkman and Ryan Stegman and some of the other people um involved in Battle Beast. Okay. Um I haven't read heaps of Invincible, like I've I've only just sort of started reading the first um volume on on uh uh my tablet. I'm reading it uh digitally. Yep. Um yeah, really enjoying it. Um I'm just trying not to read so much that it spoils the show for me. Yeah. Um so I'm not rushing through.
SPEAKER_06I don't think it I don't think it'll spoil it too much to be honest. I don't think so. Because it is very different.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, I don't think so either. It's just I'm I'm I'm sort of conscious that like the show's been coming out at a pretty regular rate. Yeah, and um I think they've got plans for you know only a certain number of seasons. So at the moment I'm enjoying the show, and at some stage I'll you know binge on the comics.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, but um so we've got four, we've got season four going on at the moment. Yes. Uh Robert Kirkland's come out and said, you know, seven's probably where they're going to be. Yes. But he's will he he would like it to go to nine if possible.
SPEAKER_08Yeah.
SPEAKER_06Um, so so yeah, this there's plenty of stories still to tell.
SPEAKER_08Yeah.
SPEAKER_06Um where it feels like four is rushing to that the end of that story, but there's still plenty more where they can sort of you know maneuver to to sort of alter where they're heading towards at this stage.
SPEAKER_08Yeah.
SPEAKER_06Um, so yeah, I look, Invincible is just one of those stories that's just a real real delight to read. Um and uh again, you know, Kirkman wears his heart on his sleeve about loving heroes and and you know those tropes that come along with it. Yeah, so yeah, it's great.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, he does a sort of like um playing with the about pushing the boundaries and and but sort of you know asking those big questions that often get ignored in uh regular superhero comics.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_07Um but yeah, no, the interview in um Comics the magazine was really good. Um I I enjoyed sort of hearing about how they're expanding the um the invincible universe and and you know I I suspect that the Invincible show itself is not going to be the end of um what we get on television at least um from that universe, judging by what I read in the interview. But yeah, uh just a shout out for Comics Mag Comics the Magazine, um, because I'm really enjoying the interviews that they um have been putting in there. Um there was a really good one uh and in uh an article about uh the um final conclusion of the swamp thing from the A in the first issue as well. So yeah, I've just been reading those. Um I've been catching up on some uh admittedly rather old sort of older JSA uh Jeff Lem Lemia um issues. Yep. Um so I've been reading through those and really enjoying them. Um I've got a soft spot for the JSA and I've uh yeah been enjoying uh the interactions between the older and the younger members of the JSA team. I think Jeff Lemir's um doing a great job uh uh writing that title. Um have you seen Mad About DC?
SPEAKER_06I I did see uh um Chips of the Darski's um funny reel that he that he did where he was playing The Flash. Yes. And he was and and he sort of confessed that he's mad about DC. Yeah.
SPEAKER_07No, I've been reading uh reading through Mad About DC but taking my time with it.
SPEAKER_06So it's it's a bit of a one-shot, isn't it?
SPEAKER_07It is a one-shot think that this is kind of a lead into maybe bringing it back. I think uh um yeah, you can never be too sure about how seriously to take Mad magazine, but yeah, yeah, there's a um an ad on the back that says something about um you know subscribing to I I don't know. I don't know what the situation with Mad is. But um I'm enjoying this special issue anyway. Um I'm just sort of reading uh two or three pages here and there in between other comics and chapters of books um because yeah, I kind of don't want to rip through it too quickly because I used to love Mad Magazine. Yeah, um and I always always loved when they um you know tackled my favourite properties, whether it was DC or Star Wars or um, and I think the tone of this one is really good. Um it gets into some of the real you know sort of minutiae of the comic reading experience from um fandom to uh writers to you know the con experience. Yeah, it's it's uh really really well done. Um and it's fun to see some of our uh regular uh comic writers and artists who are involved with who are involved putting putting their spin on the the mad style of things, yeah. Um so yeah, I'm really enjoying that too.
SPEAKER_06With um in in relation to that, if you haven't seen it, jump on the socials, have a look at All-Star Comics. They did a bit of a reel to advertise uh Mad about Mad About DC, isn't it? Yeah um and uh uh it was it was it Sean that threw the the comic at Mitch? It was Jay. It was Jay, was it? Jay, sorry, sorry, Jay. No, they people get them confused. Jay people get them confused all the time. Jay threw a comic, uh threw the comic at Mitch's head. How damaged is Mitch from that from that comic it got him square in the forehead.
SPEAKER_07I thought you were gonna ask about the comic. No. I don't know. I don't know how I don't know how the comic was.
SPEAKER_06Is he recovering from from from a concussion?
SPEAKER_07Jay's fun, yeah. No, there's some occasional weeping that I think it got him square in the forehead.
SPEAKER_06That was a good that was an amazing shot.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, it was a good one, yeah. Yeah. Now between between m me arrogantly flipping a comic over and hitting Jay in the head.
SPEAKER_06That's right. Or it's just getting revenge, right?
SPEAKER_07Yeah, like the the you I but we I need to put it on the record that at All Star Comics we do take really good care of our comics. We only do that to ones that are already damaged.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, right, okay. Um good to know.
SPEAKER_07So yeah, I just want that to be on the record.
SPEAKER_06Good little supplemental there to put it in there.
SPEAKER_07We're not treating your books like that um in general.
SPEAKER_06But uh anyway, uh we digress. What else we got? What else we got?
SPEAKER_07Uh yeah, well, the other thing that I was reading um is uh Ghost Machine have started releasing um official guidebooks. Yes. Um I love a guidebook. Yes, so do I. I'm a huge fan of the the DC Who's who, like I've got a segment on my other podcast where I've started going through um the uh official guide uh guidebook of the a handbook, sorry, of the Marvel Universe.
SPEAKER_06Which is the Tit uh Titans Tower uh reading nook.
SPEAKER_07Yes, uh and the that segment is called the the the Monitor Duty. Yes. I just had to think for a second. I really need to go for shorter titles. But I'm not going to. Um so yeah, no, this is a um sort of a who's who version of uh uh Ghost Machine. Yep. Um and the first couple of issues are focusing on the unnamed, which is like the sort of superhero, the shared superhero universe they've got featuring characters like uh Geiger and um uh Redcoat and that sort of thing. Um and yeah, so I'm enjoying reading through that as well.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, that's great.
SPEAKER_07Um how about yourself?
SPEAKER_06Yeah, so do you love noir comics? Yes. Do you love Muppet Comics?
SPEAKER_07Yes.
SPEAKER_06Have you read The Muppets Noir? No. How do you not know about this?
SPEAKER_07I don't know about this.
SPEAKER_06Okay, well, this is one that you definitely want to be putting on your pull list because this is amazing. So Dynamite uh have released uh The Muppets Noir. It's uh issue one. Okay uh it's uh written, uh written and uh drawn, lettered, uh, and main cover by Robert uh Langridge. Uh and uh this is gold, this is absolute gold. This is um Muppets in in true comic format being able to do things that they probably were uh you know don't get that opportunity to do either on the show or in a movie. Um, but I would love to see this being translated into a film. Like interpretive dance. Pretty much, but this is this is great. So uh the the the the premise of this uh comic is it's a um uh Kermit has um it it it's it's set inside the Muppet show. Everyone's getting prepared for um uh the next show coming up, and uh Kermit uh gets uh hit on the head um with uh some type of brick that comes from out of nowhere.
SPEAKER_04Not a fish.
SPEAKER_06Not a fish. Um and uh he uh has a bit of a rest and then he wakes up and he's now a uh a detective solving a uh solving a crime that has all our lovable uh Muppets in it. And this is available already. And this is available now, yeah. So this is uh Muppets Noir. Um and uh yeah it's it's uh it's a fantastic book. Um and uh yeah, it's it it was released uh I think it was released in March, uh in in sort of late March. Okay, I'm not sure how I missed this one. Yeah, I don't know how many issues it is. Um I've only just read the first issue. Uh so I would be expecting that the next one should drop on Comixology relatively soon for me. That was good. Um and it's fantastic, it's just so much fun. We get all our characters, um, Kermit as as the um as the detective. We've got Miss Piggy as the you know the damsel in distress. Of course. Um and so you know, some of our characters are played as villains, and it's just it's just gold. It's absolute it's a it's a fun read. Uh, you know, if you want to just take a you know 30 minutes of your time just to to to read like a you know 20 25 page book, I think it is, 24-page book.
SPEAKER_07And it's pretty standard.
SPEAKER_06Um this is this is great, really good fun. Okay, interesting. So highly, highly recommend it.
SPEAKER_07I will definitely be looking that up.
SPEAKER_06Yeah. Uh I'm still reading through uh the compact comic that you gave me, which is the uh the night wing uh into the light, and thoroughly enjoying that. So I'll review the whole thing on a later episode. Um and I've now got another comic which you um so graciously gave me, which is uh uh uh issue 600 or issue current issue 33 for Green Lantern. Yep. So I had to, which is amazing. So I'm really excited to uh to review that next week's uh uh show to give you that very end cover. And so there's some really exciting comics coming out soon. Um I'm really pumped for Firestorm issue one, coming out soon. So I'm looking forward to that as well.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, it's good good times in comics reading at the moment. Absolutely. Um no reason to be bored.
SPEAKER_06Yep.
SPEAKER_07Um you know what else I read this week? Oh direct. Well, I got uh hooked up by our our friend Benji Bajorek um with a copy of uh Dead Sheep.
SPEAKER_06Oh oh you got a you got an exclusive copy. I did. Oh, and I loved it. Oh, okay. This is great.
SPEAKER_07Uh he uh gr uh graciously um uh sort of delivered me a copy in advance um of my um uh Kickstarter purchase. Yep um so that I could have a bit of a read and yeah talk about it on on the pod. Yep. And um yeah I whip through that pretty quickly.
SPEAKER_06I think he's got about if while we're recording and this gets dropped, it'll probably be about a week he's probably got about a week to go-ish, I think. Uh a couple weeks, yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_07But um he's getting getting close, but yeah, I still encourage people to get on support the Kickstarter because um I I think the Troubleshoot, which is the the book, yeah, the um analogy, not analogy, uh anthology um book that's uh being released um uh related to to Dead Sheet Um looks amazing. Yep. Um and yeah, I I'm I'm really looking forward to it.
SPEAKER_06And you enjoyed Deadsheet. It was loved, it's great, isn't it? It's it's it's you you can see that and I I think I said this in a previous episode, it it it's a bit of a love letter to the Matrix, it's a little bit of a love letter to other properties that he really loves.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, totally.
SPEAKER_06Um and but but at the same time it's got its own story, yeah, carries really well. Um the way that um Benji writes and and also illustrates is that it's very theatrical. Yes. Um so I could definitely see this being like a six-parter on a on a Netflix, you know, or uh or a you know, a trilogy film, you know.
SPEAKER_07It's definitely got the seat of that, yeah. Um I I loved it. It's uh I I was delighted by how it gripped me from the first couple of pages.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_07Uh you know, as soon as I read those first couple of pages, I was in. Um and it it as you say, it's it's yeah, beautifully illustrated. Um I talked about uh when we were talking about the unknown road, about um how well uh uh Benji draws scale. Yes. Um and uh even in this story, which is very different to the Unknown Road, um yeah, he draws some some some beautiful epic breathtaking even uh scale. Yes. Um cityscapes and stuff like that. But even some of the more surreal stuff, yeah. Um I'm sort of thinking like I don't want to spoil I'm not gonna spoil it. I know what you're talking about. But um yeah, some some of the more sort of uh out of left field stuff that that that comes in is is is wonderful. And um Nina is such a relatable character. Um I was reading it and smiling, yeah you know, as as as um I guess cynical and um jaded and I guess tired of the world as she seems and the people around her, yeah, yeah. It was it was so real to me. Um I know that you know it's coming from a place where you know Benji's writing from his own internal experience, yeah, being in an office and yeah, no, but totally, but but it also really it really speaks to me. Like um, you know, I I I just was was was grinning the whole way through because I I I can see where she's coming from as well, yeah, and can totally relate to the moral conundrum that she's got um and that that she's got going on.
SPEAKER_06Um it does it Benji does a really good good good way of you know I think it's with all these books, you you you there's always a question in there, yeah. Like if it was me, how would I do this? You know, how would I cope with this? How would I relate to this? How would I what would I do?
SPEAKER_07Yeah. Um it's one of the things that um I love most about my favourite television show ever, which is Breaking Bad. Um you know, uh that whole show, the the the joy, joy is probably not even the right word, but the joy of watching that show for me is is uh trying to work out what you would do in Walt to White's uh situation. Yeah, and it's the same with you know Nina, the girl the situation she finds herself in, um i i it it boggles the mind. Like um I can't even begin to imagine what it would actually be like to be in that situation. Yeah, I don't know what I would do. Yeah.
SPEAKER_06I certainly don't but you ask you you asked the question. If it was me, what would I do? I don't know what I would do.
SPEAKER_07I certainly don't trust myself, I don't envy the position that she's in. Um but I just I do I find it fascinating and and like I said, um I'm really grateful to Benji for hooking me up with this book. It's great because it's got me so pumped for troubleshoot. Yeah. And I really hope that people get onto the Kickstarter and and support it. Yeah. Um because uh yeah, I th I think um he's really on to another really great thing here and yeah, and I want as many people to be able to share in that as as uh possible. So it's
SPEAKER_06And it's funny because you know when he when he did the video, he said that um, you know, for the Kickstarter, he said, you know, that he didn't think that he wanted to revisit the you know, that universe.
SPEAKER_08Yeah.
SPEAKER_06Um I'm so glad he did. I'm so glad that there was something obviously, you know, ticking around in his mind of, you know, how he could bring back another story about this. And um and I think it's great.
SPEAKER_07So I think it's really wonderful that he's got other collaborators working on it too. Yep. Um, I I I I think that that's gonna bring a really fresh um approach approach to to this next, you know, chapter or chapters. Yeah, yeah, I'm I'm really excited about it. So agreed. That that was that was the highlight of my reading week. Yeah, absolutely. So that's great. That's good. What about you? Anything else?
SPEAKER_06Uh that's that that's the highlight of my week. Um, so uh maybe let's get into uh the review.
SPEAKER_10Just last night I was lost in the jungle with pitfall Harry, surrounded by a giant scorpion and man-eating crocodiles. Well, Harry and I just grabbed a van, swung through the trees, and over the turfets and found the jungle treasure. It was really neat. If you haven't met Pitfall Harry, you're missing the year's most incredible video game adventure, pitfall for the Atari 2600 and television. Pitfall designed by David Crane for Activision.
SPEAKER_01New York. One man must go in where no man has ever gotten. John Company speaks from New York. The British of the Mall is above the floor of the future of market.
SPEAKER_06Have you seen Mario yet? I haven't. Okay, so they all die.
SPEAKER_07No, um I'm hoping to see Mario within no, I will we'll see Mario within the next week. Okay, not sure exactly when.
SPEAKER_06So I'll I'll quickly talk about that first because we've got other ones that we've watched this week. Um so Super Mario Galaxy movie uh dropped uh about a week ago.
SPEAKER_07And you went with um with the fam.
SPEAKER_06And I went with the fam. And uh it was a delight. It was it was great. It was um, I think it's about 128 minutes-ish. Yep. So um standard, pretty standard film.
SPEAKER_07That's not that's lengthy for an animated film.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, so um, but the interesting thing was that we walked out, um, and my youngest uh said said, Oh, that was a quick movie. Um and and I must admit that from the moment it starts to the moment it finishes, yeah, it's exhausting. It is just it is it is, but it's it's it's a fun exhausting, right? Because it's it's just the pacing is just really go go go the whole time. It's like being in a game. Okay, and I think that that's what they they aim to do. The storyline is very simple, um, and I think it needed to be simple based on the amount of cameo characters that they introduced into uh the Nintendo world. Yeah. Uh and uh it was it was great. Voice cast is fantastic, right on point, as you would expect from the first film. Yeah, um, it was great to see uh, and we mentioned this on the on the on the show, I think either last week or the week before, with Gwen Powell being um uh Fox McLeod from the Star Fox uh uh game series. Yep, yep. Um he was great, he was fantastic. They did some really cool stuff with animation, a bit like um you would expect from the Spider-Verse, okay, where you weren't just getting 3D, you weren't getting sort of that that that CG, you were also getting sort of that animated, sort of scratchy sort of style as well. Yeah, 2D sort of anime, you know. It was really, it was cool. It was really, really cool. Yeah. Um telling sort of a backstory, okay. Um, which I think was fantastic. Um really looking forward to it. Yeah, it like I said, it's a wild ride, it's really good. Um it's a really simple story, but it needed to be um just based on how much they jammed in with all the different characters. We got a lot of different lands that we would we've seen in you know the games. Yeah. Um and we had some really nice throwbacks to original games, so like Game and Watch with Oil Panic Man and you know those types of characters. No, that's fun. Um, which is really which is really cool. So um yeah, I was sitting there the whole time and I was sort of you know um uh leaning over to producer Manny and saying, Oh, that guy's from there, and this person's from that, this person's from that. And so, you know, I you know as a fan, I I really, really enjoyed seeing them. You were geeking out. Oh, I was I really was, but it it was like I said, it's it's it's a really quick paced film. Yeah. Um stay to the end. You have a uh post post-credits. You have a a uh what is it, a pre and a post-credit scene? Uh mid or pre? Mid mid mid uh so um it's not mid, it's not a mid uh scene by any means. It's an epic mid post-credits.
SPEAKER_07It's an epic Yeah, it's in the middle of the credits.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, it's in the middle of the credits.
SPEAKER_07It's good.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, that's right. But uh we can just speak English. And then you get uh and then you get a uh and then you get one at the very end, and I and and that was the payoff for my youngest, who was so excited to see a character introduced. Oh, okay. So um she had wanted this character all the way through the film. Okay, and there were squeals of joy when when she saw this character pop up. So stay stay tuned for the end. Shall do. Um, but we would love to hear your thoughts on the Super Mario Galaxy movie. Yeah, uh, did you enjoy it? Uh do you agree with me or do you disagree with me? And uh uh are you excited to see what they're going to do for the third film?
SPEAKER_07And I'll hopefully be able to throw my uh 20 cents into the arcade machine slot forward next week.
SPEAKER_06I look forward to it. Absolutely. Uh one film that you and I saw uh uh not not together, but uh pretty much days apart, I think it was.
SPEAKER_07Also, you've seen Project Hail Mary.
SPEAKER_06I've seen Project Hail Mary as well. Yeah. So and um what was your thoughts?
SPEAKER_07Loved it. I thought it was really good. Yeah, it was it was fun. Um yeah, I realised that um I've become quite a fan of Ryan Gosling. Um I was talking to producer Kim after we saw the movie. We went out and got some some burgers, yeah, and um uh we were talking about it afterwards, and we realized that we've been to see his last three films films. Yeah, yeah. Um we went and saw uh Barbie, and we went and saw The Four Guy, which uh I'll continue to keep shilling um about because uh we love the Four Guy. I thought it was a great, a great, big, fun movie. Yep. Um and now we've we've seen this one and we'll probably see his next too, unless he's got anything between this and Star Wars Starfighter.
SPEAKER_08Yeah.
SPEAKER_07Um he's really good. Like the the way that he carries this film, um and this is again a point that co-producer Kim made, uh not one of my observations. Like he he's in this whole film. Like he's he's on screen.
SPEAKER_06It's just well a lot of the it's it's what about two-thirds of the film is him, yeah, on his own.
SPEAKER_07It's it's it's him and it's and a puppet. And a pupp a puppet. Um and he is just yeah, so engaging and um fun to watch and uh you know fun to spend time with. It it feels like a Lorden Miller film, like it's you know, sort of constant, um upbeat, um epic in proportions, epic in proportions, um, visually stunning.
SPEAKER_06Um yeah, no, it was was it was really good fun. And the and I I felt that the story was just it was so heartwarming, it was just so enjoyable. Um you know, some laugh out loud moments. Um, you know, this this there's a couple of moments where you're on the edge of your seat hoping for the best, yeah. Preparing for the worst and hoping for the best. Um, and um the payoff at the end, like that movie landed so well at the end, so well at the end. Yeah, because I didn't I I was really nervous about how this was gonna end.
SPEAKER_08Yeah.
SPEAKER_06Um, but I felt that it it you know they really took the time and just really did that third act well.
SPEAKER_07I heard some criticism of the of the fact that someone said to me that they thought that it went 20 minutes too long. I disagree. 100%. I just agree. You know, I I I really think that um I'm glad that they went that extra mile to show us exactly uh how well where his his story uh ended, for want of a better expression. Um yeah, I just thought it was uh yeah, really, really fun, really heartwarming.
SPEAKER_06Um and Rocky, Rocky is awesome. So when we refer to Rocky uh as the puppet, it was practical effects. So they had a uh a puppeteer who did the voice of Rocky Um and was was moving uh that that character around in in the screen. Um so so um and that that was awesome. You forgot all about that being a puppet.
SPEAKER_07It gave it a very sort of 80s adventure movie type vibe. Like it it it it it had sort of Spielberg type vibes, and I think that's what um you know Andy Weir, who wrote the book on which this movie was based on, also wrote the book The Martian. The Martian, on which the movie The Martian was based on. Yeah. I think he I mean he writes very um fun, joyful um stuff, you know, with high stakes, definitely, um, but uh uh hopeful and and enjoyable sort of stories, you know, wish fulfillment type stuff. Um you know, not that we really want to end up in the same situation as Mark Watney and the Martian, but um, you know, in this case it's you know, it's it's a it's a uh despite the peril that Ryan Gosling's character is in, um it's it's kind of a uh a a little big boy's wish fulfillment. Um, you know, he gets to go to space, work out all sorts of problems and hang out with an alien best friend.
SPEAKER_06Yeah. Um it was it it did feel like without it being cheesy, it felt like a family film. It did. It was very easy, it was it would be very easy to take my youngest two, but have my one of uh my you know one of my boys with me, you know, as well. So it sort of fulfilled the gaps of everything. Maybe my youngest might be getting bored a little bit in certain places, yeah. Um, but but overall, I'm not concerned about the content that's in it either.
SPEAKER_07They weren't they they weren't with us, but there were certainly young kids in our session. Yeah, wow. Um and they and and they seem to be enjoying it and engaged um the whole way through. So yeah, yeah, no, I th I think it's gonna be a good film um to to be able to watch in in future years um you know with families.
SPEAKER_06Well, it's been described as a classic modern film.
SPEAKER_07Okay.
SPEAKER_06That's an interesting statement.
SPEAKER_07I'm trying to get my head around what that means.
SPEAKER_06Well, you've got classic films, right? Like a Godfather or something like that. This is a classic modern film.
SPEAKER_07So not a modern classic.
SPEAKER_06No, or a modern classic, whichever way you want to spin it.
SPEAKER_07Are they different?
SPEAKER_06I don't know. Potato tomato. Oh boy. But uh you're not doing my grocery shopping. But uh, you know, I mean that's that's a that's a good description. I mean uh modern classic, I I think is great.
SPEAKER_07I a word that I often use when I see a movie like this is yeah, it's a it's an expression, it's a keeper.
SPEAKER_06Yeah.
SPEAKER_07Um I'm I'm a big fan of re-watching films uh for whatever reason. It's I find it comforting to re-watch movies like Star Wars and The Rocketeer and um Indiana Jones, Indiana Jones. Um Big Trouble and Little China. Yeah, a bit trouble in Little China. We've all I mean, you know, we've all got a comfort films. Not everybody likes to re-watch things. Yep. I really, really like to re-watch things. Um and uh when I see a new film like this, the The Martian was another one for me. The Martian was a keeper, and I've watched it a bunch of times since I first saw it. I thought it was a fantastic film. Um and yeah, this one's a keeper for me.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, agree.
SPEAKER_07100%.
SPEAKER_06Uh do you want to talk about Maul?
SPEAKER_07Uh yes. Have you seen both episodes?
SPEAKER_06I've seen both episodes.
SPEAKER_07Yeah.
SPEAKER_06Yeah. Um I I I'm excited for it.
SPEAKER_08Yeah.
SPEAKER_06I like that they're setting us up for a big story.
SPEAKER_08Yeah.
SPEAKER_06Uh I really say so. For those of you, uh this is uh Maul Maul Star Wars Maul Shadow Warrior of the Shepherd.
SPEAKER_07I know exactly I know exactly what it's called. Don't tell me I can't remember Maul Shadow Lord.
SPEAKER_06Shadow Lord, thank you. Uh so this is this is uh that was great. This is a setup um where we have a storyline that's in between uh the Clone Wars animated series and also the uh and before Rebels. Yeah, it's in this series somewhere, sort of sitting in somewhere in that timeline between the two. Yeah. Um because I'm watching uh Rebels at the moment and Maul has just turned up, uh, which is in season three, I think it is.
SPEAKER_07Let me guess, he's angry.
SPEAKER_06He's he's not happy. No. Um it's it's it's it's old Maul. Um so in this, in in the older. But he's still angry. But he's still yeah, he's still got some issues. Yeah, he he he really needs to get on the couch. Oh, he's got issues. Um and so we're seeing Maul in full effect as a as a uh uh a crime lord, yeah, of the underworld.
SPEAKER_07Yeah. I've I've got I I find it interesting that he's being a crime lord. Like I sort of I I wonder about his motivations. Like I thought it was w interesting when we saw him um at the end of Clone Wars? No, of solo, a Star Wars story.
SPEAKER_05Oh yes, when he when he turned out a little cameo with the crimson dawn, yeah.
SPEAKER_07Like I sort of thought that being a crime lord was an interesting kind of role for him because like his bread and butter seems to be revenge.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, yeah. Well, I mean, there's definitely a revenge story here because it it it very clearly states that that he's out for revenge for all the crime syndicates, yeah. Um for everybody, including including Crimson Dawn.
SPEAKER_07My my theory is that he's locked on to being a crime lord because that's where he knows that he's gonna get the the resources and the time to do the most revenging.
SPEAKER_06Yes. Ooh, that's a good that's a good lead up.
SPEAKER_07Yeah. That's a good lead up. That's how I that's how I justify it in my head. Other than that, other than you know me working at out that way, it just seems a bit weird that he's a crime lawyer to make.
SPEAKER_06Interesting storyline with the pro with the police, um, the procedural sort of side of it.
SPEAKER_07I loved um is it Lawson? Lawson, yeah. Yeah, um I thought he was a great character. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So straight out of Blade Runner or Yeah, it definitely felt like that. And I was surprised pleasantly surprised when I saw in the credits that he's voiced by um Wagner Murray, who's the Brazilian actor who was nominated for Best Actor this year at the Oscars. Right. For his role in the secret agent. Yes, yes. Um I thought that was really great. Yeah. Um, because I think he was also, I was talking to producer Kim about this. I think he was also he was in Narcos. Yes, he was. As was Diego Luna, who plays Cassian Andor, as was Pedro Pascal, who plays The Mandalorian.
SPEAKER_06Of course, yeah. So they're all sort of sort of uh slowly seeping into the Star Wars universe, which is great.
SPEAKER_07I really liked this this character. Like I just thought he sang very real. Yes. Um, you know, he's he's obviously playing that sort of um you know uh honest cop kind of kind of character. In a bit of a dirty world and yeah, but but also trying to be the you know the single parent to a teenage son and that with its challenges and um and and trying to sort of exist in a world where you know the empire has um fully got its grasp on on the universe. Totally, but he's he's he's trying not to let it into his corner of things because he obviously knows that that's not going to be positive. Um and yeah, no, I just I I thought it was a really interesting character.
SPEAKER_06I I I wonder whether we're going to see a bit of conflict with with um with Larson. Um about you know the the lines becoming blurred in in the pursuit of Maul.
SPEAKER_08Yeah.
SPEAKER_06Um I I what I really dug is that when Maul was in action, we only got to see him maybe in two sort of major fights, if you want to call them that.
SPEAKER_07Yeah.
SPEAKER_06Boy, they were epic, they were really on fire.
SPEAKER_07The animation's beautiful.
SPEAKER_06Oh, it's and and I I'm not too sure what it is that they're actually doing um with with this animation, but I believe it's different from what they've been doing in past um series.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, it's it's it's I mean it it's got a similar um structure, but it's got a different, it's like a different finish.
SPEAKER_06Yeah. Um yeah, and those fight scenes are are epic. They are amazing, they're quick, they're amazing. Um and and no mercy, absolutely zero mercy from all. Which is what you would expect, isn't it? Yeah, that lightsaber to the throat was awesome.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, it was brutal.
SPEAKER_06It was. But it's what you would expect from him, right?
SPEAKER_07Yeah, totally.
SPEAKER_06Um I think this one, I think this one also based on the subject matter of the um of the actual character, is that it's taken it up a notch from say like Clone Wars and also Rebels. Yeah, which I think the audience was a lot younger. Yeah. This one feels a lot older.
SPEAKER_07It's almost like um we've we've arrived at a mall at this point in his life where he's at his most angry, but also his most powerful. Um, you know, he's got all these resources in terms of you know, people, he's got freaking Mandalorians working for him, and he's still got Deathwatch, doesn't he?
SPEAKER_06He's still got Death Watch sort of part of the must have, yeah. Or or or or a sort of an offshoot from the Death Watch.
SPEAKER_07But but I mean he's got all these badasses working for him, like he's got a couple of other Zabrax who one of them, at least one of whom seems like a complete psycho. Yeah. Um and uh he's got a couple of Mandalorians working with him, and and he's obviously got the resources to really be exacting his you know revenging dreams. Um, so yeah, no, he's he's he's really full on. Yeah, um Lawson is the character.
SPEAKER_06Oh, we were the first time, yeah.
SPEAKER_07I was right the first time. But I just looked it up, yeah. Lawson. Um, but yeah, no, I'm really enjoying it so far. I really like the um sort of uh the Jedi uh character. Um the uh like Master Splinter produces.
SPEAKER_06It's like it's like a turtle. Yeah, a little bit. He's like a like an old turtle.
SPEAKER_07He's definitely an alien I've seen we've seen before.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, but we haven't got a name for him yet, do we?
SPEAKER_07I don't I don't not not in the episodes, I don't think. No, no, but he's really cool. Yeah. Um I really like the the Twilek Jelly Jedi character that um we we've seen that that has taken Maul's eye. Yep.
SPEAKER_06Um and that's gonna be a really interesting story.
SPEAKER_07I really like the subtle um expressive animation that they've put on her face. Like um, it's a gorgeous character design, but I but I really like some of the because there's there's a lot of scenes where she's not talking all that much, but you can really see what's going on in her head. Yep, and I I think that that's a a really uh great testament to the evolution of the animation in these Star Wars shows. Um so I'm really excited to see where her story goes. Um but yeah, I I really enjoyed it. My only I think my only my only criticism of it was that um you know we get we're getting 10 episodes of this one. Yep. And I wonder how many um more times we can see Maul menacingly stand in a darkened doorway with his hood up. Where he's all framed, yeah, all framed with it with the with the music blaring. And then the and then the lightsaber comes up. The lightsaber illuminates like because I think they did it twice in these episodes.
SPEAKER_06We got we got one in each episode.
SPEAKER_07We got one in each episode. And and even on the second one, I have to admit, I was having a little bit of a giggle because I was like, you know, here it comes. Here he comes.
SPEAKER_06He's doing his thing again, he's doing the super what was it? What was it? The uh the Superman landing or whatever they called it. Uh I don't know. Um it was it was almost like that, right?
SPEAKER_07I don't watch wrestling, but it's like he's doing a WWE sort of entrance at the top of the ramp in his music play. It's time to play the game. Yeah. Um could we smell what the mall is cooking?
SPEAKER_06But um No, it's a good it is a good point.
SPEAKER_07But but but I also sort of wonder whether the reason. That we got to see that twice in this is because, as I said, he's at the he's at the height of his power, like he's completely in control, and maybe we'll see less of that as things spiral out of his control. Yeah, um, and also having said that, I mean it's just really cool. So, yeah, you know, we can do it as many times as you likes, really. I just will have a bit of a giggle every time it happens.
SPEAKER_06We'll put it on the mole bingo card, yeah, and uh let's see see how many we get in uh in the 10 episodes. The the thing I found really interesting about this is that the first episode was uh 30 was it 30 uh 30 minutes and the one was 23 minutes.
SPEAKER_07Uh 23 or 24.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, so it was a little bit shorter. Yeah. Um I I'd probably just like to see those probably a little bit longer, but you know, that's the standard for for for that type of series.
SPEAKER_07I think for streaming shows it's gonna ebb and flow a bit.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, we might get 27 and then 26 and then 23 again.
SPEAKER_07Depending on the storyline, honestly doesn't bother me. Um because uh no doubt um whatever length it is is going to be what is best for the that episode of the story. Um and it'll all even out. Like usually with these things, especially once we get down to the last two or three episodes, they tend to be longer ones. Yeah, and that's where you really want the bulk of the story. So neat. Um yeah, not I'm not too bothered.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, the um well, I mean, as we said in the Zest um all season two has been Greenweed. Yeah, amazing. Um so it'll be really interesting to watch this now with with eyes open, knowing that there's a season two coming.
SPEAKER_07I'm just glad to know that there's more Star Wars streaming coming.
SPEAKER_06Yeah.
SPEAKER_07Um, like we talked, I think, last week. Yeah. Went with you know, Star Trek uh Starfleet Academy being cancelled. Yeah. Like we don't know what's next. So Star Wars. Star for Star Trek. Yeah. Star Wars, we've not known, like we haven't got anything on Star Trek. No, there's nothing, there's not a lot on the radar at the start. But I mean, at least this is a a you know, a a carrot in the distance, is that an expression? Yeah, yeah, but it's for Starfighter. Yeah, uh you know, we've got Starfighter coming to theatres, and we've got more coming to streaming, and we've got um Mando and Grogu in between. Exactly. Um, you know, I just I want to know that there's a uh future for all of that sort of stuff. Yeah, um, and it's just comforting to know that there is something more in the works.
SPEAKER_06And I love that there's Ahsoka as well and Ahsoka season two, which is coming out later in the year. Yes, yeah, later this year. Um so and and I'm looking forward to that, you know, going back and re-watching Rebels Now and finishing off Clone Wars. I'm really happy to, you know, sort of revisit Ahsoka and look at that from a different lens again. Yeah, I can't wait. Um and I and I love that they're using Maul as as sort of the the foundation to really introduce us to the underworld of of Star Wars. Yeah. Because we get we get those sort of seedy bellies a little bit in films, yeah, but we don't get a real true picture of what that really looks like. Um, but we do in this, you know. We we really know that there's some some pretty heavy duty syndicates and you know that that's what's sort of running um underneath the galactic empire, and it it's really fun and great.
SPEAKER_07I'm really excited because I'm hoping that this is going to help make sense of um or some sense of Darth Maul's appearance at the end of Solo Solo. Yeah, because what I one of the things that I want most in Star Wars, and I I'm not confident that I'm gonna get it, is uh some sort of a continuation of that story for Han and Lando and Kira that we got in Solo. I'd love I'd love a sequel, but I but I don't think it's gonna happen. Unfortunately. Um but I I I'd I'd love for this to sort of fill in some of that behind the scenes stuff that leads up to that moment that we saw at the end of Solo. Yeah, and then perhaps for the next chapter, whether it's a Lando series or um, you know, best case scenario, it's a uh solo sequel uh featuring um you know uh uh Alden Erin Reich for me. I don't think that's gonna happen, but that's what I would love.
SPEAKER_06I'd love to see him. He did such a fantastic job of you know um putting his feet in the shoes of of Harrison Black. I thought he was great and I thought he was great too.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, I thought he was great, and I thought despite the troubles that that movie had behind the scenes, I thought it was a great time, and I've watched it multiple times. It's um yeah, that's another keeper. Yeah, absolutely.
SPEAKER_06Um, all right, anything else that you've been watching? Yeah, I've been watching Dead Evil Born Again. Oh, that's another one we need to talk about.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_06That's great. Yeah. It's um it's a good start. So I think last week I spoke about it. You hadn't started watching it just yet.
SPEAKER_07Uh yes, I think that was right.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, so I'd watch the first two episodes. Yeah. Um, we're now up to uh three. Three in our time. Yep.
SPEAKER_07Episode four is out tomorrow.
SPEAKER_06Tomorrow our time. Yeah. Um, so yeah, you'll have all four episodes to watch. Um I think we sort of talked briefly about um the decline in in in everybody's demeanor and nobody's having a fun time in the Daredevil universe now.
SPEAKER_07No.
SPEAKER_06Um what's your what's your thoughts so far? Well, to that point, it is called Hell's Kitchen. Um they're in their personal health, that's for sure.
SPEAKER_07That's right. Um, yeah, no, I'm really enjoying it. I'm I'm really excited for what uh is yet to come. Um I'm dying to see Jessica Jones. Yeah. Um, but I'm not too bothered that we haven't seen her yet. I don't mind them, you know, sort of uh keeping us waiting for for her because I know that when we do see her, it's gonna be awesome.
SPEAKER_08Yeah.
SPEAKER_07Um but yeah, no, I'm I'm really enjoying it. Um I'm really enjoying the little glimpses we've been getting of Bullseye.
SPEAKER_06Yep.
SPEAKER_07Um yeah, he's you know so cool. Um and yeah, that is a trip.
SPEAKER_06It's only just enough, right? It it's not too overbearing, it's not and then when he makes a presence, he makes a presence, you know, and I think that's what's great about him.
SPEAKER_07Yeah. And I'm really enjoying the fact that we're um you know now getting uh sort of uh an episode a week. Yeah. Um I'm excited that I think that's gonna be that way to towards uh through to the end. Yep. Um and I'm pumped about that because I like the uh process of being able to watch an episode and then you know us talk about it on here on Facebook. Digest it a little bit more, but also just talk in general with people about it. Um I love that we all get to experience that journey together and to be able to talk about it in in between. So um yeah, I'm just thrilled to have Dead Devil back. It's a heck of a week, isn't it? It's like we've got new episodes of Deadevil, Invincible, The Boys is back. Yeah, yeah, um Darth Maul. Oh, and and Darth Maul. Darth Maul, so sorry, the formerly Darth Maul.
SPEAKER_06It's a it's a great, it's a great time to be alive, to be a to be a nerd.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, no, I do. I love I love it. I think it's um it's great fun. We are we are very lucky.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, hundred and one percent.
SPEAKER_07Um so yeah, aside from that, all the only other thing I've been watching is hours and hours and hours of uh the Artemis 2 uh mission. Uh the integrity uh spaceship uh yeah floating through space and today, you know, whipping around the moon. Um waiting for those cosmic rays and the Fantastic Four to appear. Cannot get enough, and I hope that doesn't happen. You don't want a Ben Grimm running around picking up no, I want them to do as much uh science as possible and get back as safe as possible. Right. And um so we can do it all again in a couple of years.
SPEAKER_06Okay. All right. Love it. You that's that's good. We we we definitely think differently about this. Yeah, yes. So it seems but uh that's what makes this uh this this podcast fun. Yeah. Um tell us, uh, what's your thoughts? Do you think we're gonna get the Fantastic Four, or do you think they're just gonna do some sciencey stuff and then come home? Uh let us know on all our social which is exciting in itself. Uh under pop culture pod. Uh hey, I thought I'd do a really quick feature before we get into uh the um uh the the shout. The shout uh which I found really amusing. I didn't know some of these and I thought I thought I'd double check with you on the other. We did the twist before the twist and shout. Yeah, sure. Shake it all over. That went well. Uh that dropped really badly. Um but anyway, we'll we we digress. I tried, didn't I? Yeah, you did. Um I thought I'd give you um names that were almost given to comic book characters.
SPEAKER_04Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_06I didn't know if you knew you knew some of these. Um of these are great. So we'll just run through the list and then we can chat about them. How many are on this list? Uh about probably, I don't know, maybe maybe ten. Okay. At most. Oh no, no, probably even less than that. Okay. Probably about five or six. It's shorter than some of he lists. Yeah, well, you know, I'd I'd do my best.
SPEAKER_05Hit me up, let's do it.
SPEAKER_06All right, Spider-Man. What do you think he was originally called?
SPEAKER_07Uh uh Wall Crawler. Insect Man.
SPEAKER_06That was his original working title before he became That's not not that much Spider-Man.
SPEAKER_07That's no more outlandish than Spider-Man.
unknownYep.
SPEAKER_06Uh Shazam.
SPEAKER_07Shazam he was Captain Marvel.
SPEAKER_05Before Captain Marvel. So his original name was uh Marvel Man. Captain Thunder.
SPEAKER_07Okay. Interesting. Yeah, it's still sort of like a bit of a nickname. I mean, it's kind of like a nickname for Shazam, isn't it? I mean it could definitely be a sidekick to him. Well now in the the comics he tends to get called the Captain as a compromise between um you know not not calling him Captain Marvel, which would get uh Warner Brothers into legal trouble. Yes. Um So yeah, no, that makes sense.
SPEAKER_06Uh Plastic Man.
SPEAKER_07Plastic Man. I uh I uh dread to think. Um what was Plastic Man?
SPEAKER_05Elastic Man.
SPEAKER_07Okay, well that makes sense.
SPEAKER_05It doesn't it doesn't have the same ring.
SPEAKER_07No.
SPEAKER_05Definitely doesn't have the same ring.
SPEAKER_07Wolverine. Uh or Wolverine.
SPEAKER_05Wolverine.
SPEAKER_07Uh I don't know, uh Scratchy Body McGee.
SPEAKER_06Can you imagine? You'd buy that, you'd buy that, wouldn't you? Scratchy Body McGree on the front. You'd buy that. Yeah, standing there with Black Widow and Captain America.
SPEAKER_07Can you imagine the like an 80s cartoon of Scratchy Body McGee?
SPEAKER_06I'd watch it. Uh I I think it it this name is probably just right up there with Scratchy Body McGree. Uh it's the badger.
SPEAKER_07Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, that it doesn't land very well, does it? No.
SPEAKER_07No.
SPEAKER_06Doesn't doesn't yeah, it's it really it lands really hard, doesn't it? It's not great.
SPEAKER_07No, that falls flat. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_06Uh Captain America? Uh Captain America. Captain America.
SPEAKER_07Um Agent Liberty.
SPEAKER_06Now, interestingly, General Glory. I'm pretty sure that they mentioned this in the Captain America First Avenger. Uh they referred to him as this. Super American. Super American. Super American.
SPEAKER_07Okay, well they they would have been sued for that, wouldn't they? Absolutely. They would have been.
SPEAKER_06Uh Iron Man. Uh Tin Man. Tin Man. Correct. Oh, okay. There you go. Good one. Good one. Uh Wonder Woman. Here's a good one for you.
SPEAKER_07Wonder Woman.
SPEAKER_06Wonder Woman. Uh no, I bet. Single single name.
SPEAKER_07I bet it's sexist. No. What was it? Suprema. Ooh. Suprema. Interesting name. Pretty good. It's uh sounds like a cross between a pizza pie and a juice box.
SPEAKER_06Yeah. Um this one does not land very well at all. Uh Black Panther.
SPEAKER_07Uh yeah.
SPEAKER_06Coal Tiger. Cold Tiger? Coal, as in like the as in like a lump of coal. Coal tiger. Because he's black. Like black like coal. I don't think that that's a very good name at all, but uh anyway.
SPEAKER_07No.
SPEAKER_06Um so yeah, there's a couple of character names that uh we're glad that they have the names that they have and not the ones that they were originally given.
SPEAKER_07Yes, especially Black Panther. Yeah, I agree. 100%. Yeah, no, that was that was that was interesting. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_06So there you go. It's very short and sharp and straight to the point. Uh free ticket feature segment. So hope you enjoyed that. Yes. Is there any other characters that you know of that uh have uh have a different name or original working name before they became what they are? Let us know. Hit us up on the socials, we'd love to hear about it. Why not? Uh under Pulp Culture Pod. Uh keep it clean and non-controversial. Yeah, absolutely. No no uh no sheep stole aways. Stop talking.
SPEAKER_07We're almost out, man. Uh let's get into the shout.
SPEAKER_06All right, MJ, what have you got?
SPEAKER_07Uh I just wanted to um shout out Benji's um Kickstarter one more time. Yeah. Yeah. So um get on, support, troubleshoot. I can't wait to read it. And um, once you've read Dead Sheet, if you haven't already, I'm sure you will be excited about it as well.
SPEAKER_06And when you purchase it, 10% goes to us now for all the plugging that we've given him.
SPEAKER_07No, not true. It's just not true. We're doing it. We're not getting that? No, and the goodness of our own hearts.
SPEAKER_06I thought we talked about this and I thought we were going to do that.
SPEAKER_07Oh, well, you didn't talk to me about it, that's for sure.
SPEAKER_06Come to our production meetings. No. Go to your We have production meetings. You obviously didn't know that we had production meetings.
SPEAKER_07I don't read my emails.
SPEAKER_06Someone said if if it's not if I'm not in the two column, then I delete them. So anyway, um about you, wouldn't you? Yeah, look, I I would love to give a big shout out to uh a um a platform which is called Comics One. Uh and uh it's a global marketplace for crowdfunding funding platforms like Kickstarter. Okay. Um and it's an app uh and it is an app exclusively for independent comic creators um that puts the creators first. Um the marketplace has uh approximately uh 1300 books on it from around the world. What's it called? Uh it's called Comics Uh Comics One. So comics, so C-O-M-I-X.1.
SPEAKER_08Right.
SPEAKER_06Uh and you can download the app or you can check them out on socials. Okay. Uh they are um uh really behind uh you know getting uh right behind local uh creators, um both writers and illustrators, um, but really pushing the books. Uh opportunity to crowdfund, very similar platform to Kickstarter, where if it doesn't if it doesn't launch, then um you don't lose the money.
SPEAKER_04Okay.
SPEAKER_06Uh so just a just another other platform that you can really sort of push your book, which is which is great. Um they have a big selection across several genres um and books uh by a winning uh uh winning creators. Um and uh the sign up as a user is free, completely free. Yep. Um we are um uh we are really grateful for um for comics one because they've actually given us um an opportunity to uh review some of the books that are uh in the platform now. Okay so over the next coming weeks we'll be um uh I wouldn't say we were sponsored, but um thanks to um you know the uh the kindness of of Comics One, um we'll be able to um uh get uh to some more books um that we might not necessarily have had the opportunity to before. SPEAKER_07Yep, I love having stuff to read.
SPEAKER_06Yep. Uh we are at the end of our show. We have uh passed the sun and we are now getting to the moon. Um so we're gonna lose frequency.
SPEAKER_07They didn't pass the sun.
SPEAKER_06We're gonna we're gonna we're gonna we're gonna lose frequency soon.
SPEAKER_07So that did happen, but that's they didn't pass the sun, that's not canon.
SPEAKER_06Well that well the sun passed us and you know the moon's now coming up and you know things are getting dark and we need to wrap up the show.
SPEAKER_07Technically, we're revolving around the sun.
SPEAKER_06Okay, good to know. That's why I'm not a scientist.
SPEAKER_07We need to watch more NASA YouTube.
SPEAKER_06Okay, good, good to know. I'll uh I'll get right on that. But uh it's not NASA canon. It's another another bumper show uh with lots of uh nerd goodness. Thank you for joining us. Uh thanks as always for your company.
SPEAKER_07We really, really appreciate it.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, we do. And um we look forward to your company next week when you'll hear MJ say.
