034 - Animation Red Dogging
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
MJ's operating at about 75%, while Nath has somehow cranked himself up to 125%, making for a delightfully unbalanced episode of pop culture goodness.
The boys dive into a stack of animation news fresh from the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, while Florida Man returns to the Weird Files with the only logical business venture imaginable: a car park tiki bar.
There's a rare absence from the Mos Eisley Mailbag, meaning no Cyril this week much to Nath's pleasure. Meanwhile, MJ discovers what "Red Dogging" means thanks to Buck Rogers, and Nath once again earns himself a Vapid Pirate Nonsense warning, proving some traditions are worth keeping.
It may be a shorter episode than usual, but it's packed with laughs, animation, weird news and all the pop culture chat you've come to expect.
Short on runtime, big on entertainment, it's another week of the Pulp Culture Podcast.

Hey, welcome to the pop culture podcast, your weekly dose of all things pop culture. I'm Nath.
SPEAKER_05I'm MJ.
SPEAKER_07And we are what 75% healthy, would you say?
SPEAKER_05Uh yeah, I'm gonna go 70.
SPEAKER_07Okay.
SPEAKER_05What about you?
SPEAKER_07Yeah, I'm I'm I'm 110, so uh I'll uh I'll make up the difference, even though that's not really good math.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I'm not sure how that adds up, but we it means we're close to 100% as a team.
SPEAKER_07As Finn would say, algebraic. So um yeah, we're mathematically we're all good. We're all good this week. Uh uh last week uh MJ did his best. He was uh fading fast uh as as the uh as the hour continued, but uh but he's back this week in good health.
SPEAKER_05Um I I fade I did too. I was I was not well. I wouldn't have been able to record two days later.
SPEAKER_07So yeah.
SPEAKER_05Um I'm glad to be on the upswing.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, but uh welcome back. Thanks for your company. Um it's great uh it's great that that uh you now have the option for YouTube and uh and we're really grateful for those that have uh have been tuning in uh and uh and seeing us uh as we record. Uh this uh format seems to be working really well at the moment. And um, so yeah, thanks for your support in that.
SPEAKER_05Thank you, both of you.
SPEAKER_07Oh uh, but uh maybe uh maybe we've got heaps to talk about actually on the zest. So let's get into uh the zest, shall we?
SPEAKER_05Let's do it. Yeah, yeah, it's a it's a visual thing, but um congratulations on these new graphics, Nate. It's done a great thing.
SPEAKER_07It's all very flashy, isn't it? It's all all all excitement.
SPEAKER_05It's very impressive. I'm sure that even our audio listeners can hear the difference.
SPEAKER_07Yes, I'm sure they can too, for sure.
SPEAKER_05It just um no doubt sounds just a little bit fancier.
SPEAKER_07Oh well, it's uh it it it at least the audio quality is good. That's that's all we that's all we care about. Can be as flashy as you like, but it's long as the audio is good, that's all that matters. Hey um this week. Mr. Trailers, what have you got?
SPEAKER_05Uh well I I'm flying without notes this week, so I've got nothing. Perfect. But um, I do I can recall one trailer uh because I only saw it yesterday, and that was for uh Robert Eckers werewolf. Yes, Robert Eggers werewolf. Yeah, um, yeah. Did you see that one?
SPEAKER_07Yeah, I did see that one. Um look, I mean, you know, Nosferatu was was an interesting um, you know, take his take on Nosferatu was was was a really interesting one. Um and really didn't uh he has that ability to make your skin crawl, doesn't he?
SPEAKER_05He does, yeah. No, I'm I'm a big fan of Robert Eggers and his aesthetic. I really enjoyed Nosferatu. I really loved the witch. Um I'm really excited about Werewolf. I know I'm not much of a horror fan, but there's there's just something about his um aesthetic and the way that he presents stories that that really speaks to me. Um that trailer was one of the most harrowing that I've seen in some time, but um, yeah, I'm I'm pumped for it.
SPEAKER_07He kind of feels like he has the ability to to reach into your skull and start, you know, like touching your brain in places that you don't want it to be.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, very very much so. There's there's just something very authentic about the look of his films, yeah. Um, particularly uh uh I'm thinking of the witch. Like when I first saw the witch, um I I really felt like I'd been transported back to that place. And it's not like I didn't know that the the actors were people that exist in our world here in the 2020s, but um I I I I really felt like uh I'd been uh transported, time traveled back to um to that time. And and there's yeah, just just something about the way that his stuff is is uh shot and conceived and and executed that um has a real transformative and transportive quality that I love.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, I agree. 100% agree with that. Um it and and I think yeah, I think you're right there. He really does, you know, especially with this trailer, um, it it really did feel like that we were were like it had been recorded in that time, you know, like somebody had gone back in time with a camera and captured it all uh on on film for us. And um so there's something really unique about about his it reminds me a bit like you know, like when David Fincher first started out, you know, and like his, you know, with especially with like something like seven, there was something really unique about that as well. Um I think I think he's sort of in that I I would put him in that same same category. Would you would you agree?
SPEAKER_05I can see that. Yeah, uh completely. I think I think um something that it amused me in the trailer, and I've only watched it I think twice, um, and admittedly both those times on my phone. Um uh a very simple device that uh uh is often used uh these days, uh or at least I've seen it a couple of times lately to transport us back in time uh in a film or piece of television is the the uh narrower aspect ratio. Um they use it in the start of this trailer at least. I don't know whether they use it throughout the whole thing, but it's something that I noticed from Widow's Bay as well. Um, yeah, we've just watched Widows Bay, I think it was episode five.
SPEAKER_07Oh, I look forward to chatting about that in the uh the rewatch.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, but but it's just the aspect ratio. Um uh just by bringing in that aspect ratio, maybe it just speaks to people that um experience television before the widescreen era like us. Um it's such a simple device that that that um immediately indicates that something's happening in the past. I love it.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, and there's also that um, you know, the he's he's got a sort of a a grain over the top. It's it's it's definitely not shot in 4K. Um, you know, there's this there's a a bit of a uh a CPA wash as well, which is which is really sort of dragging the image down, um, which is I think is the whole purpose of it, is that yeah, it's just it's just not it's not a pretty film, you know, it's not meant to be.
SPEAKER_05It's got the it's got the charm, but also the horror of uh the old photographs. Yeah. Um I I find uh horror movies from uh say the 1920s and that sort of an era so much more terrifying than than modern stuff. Yeah, um yeah I don't know what it is. I think it's just uh yeah it's it's something about the the visuals of it and not being able to see everything as clearly. And um, yeah, I mean Robert Eggers is clearly a fan of all of that sort of stuff and and um yeah, plays plays with that um that you know oeuvre really, really well. Um yeah, I'm really excited for this film. I'm looking forward to seeing it in the theater. I'm looking forward to being yeah, really uncomfortable throughout the whole experience.
SPEAKER_07Oh well, get uncomfortable now because it's uh it's come it's coming coming at us really quickly.
SPEAKER_05Uh I love that it's I love that it's coming out on Christmas Day as well.
SPEAKER_07I just think that there's something Merry Christmas.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, there's there's something really perverse about that. And I I dig it.
SPEAKER_07Yeah. Well, that was the only trailer that I that I sort of picked up on this week. Uh there was Angry Birds 3, but um, yeah, I I feel like they've they've definitely jumped the uh proverbial shark on this one. So uh I don't even think it's worth mentioning. Um, even though it it's gonna be it'll still do really well at the cinema um with the kids. Um yeah, I I I I think they've really struggled with this this this new one, um, because it's all about parenthood as the angry birds in the parenthood. So um, so yeah, I like I said, I don't think it's really worth talking about too much. Um one thing that I think is worth talking about, um, which is really, really interesting. Um, so we know that um Millie Bobby Brown and uh also David Harbour, who were um, you know, father and daughter, well, you know, um pseudo father and daughter on um found father and daughter. Yeah, so they they they obviously had a bit of a bit of a tiff, um, you know, it's quite public. Um, and um we know that uh they've they've sort of patched up their problem and um and and moved on from that. Uh the the part of that is is that um they are reuniting um as father and daughter again in a uh an all-new series um from um which is which is part of A24. Uh there's no name uh yet or type working title at this stage of the game. Um, but I do have a do have a small sort of synopsis on it, and it and I'll just read what it says. It says a disgraced FBI agent uh is lured back into the field when his estranged daughter, who followed in his footsteps, vanishes on a mission. So this looks like it's a bit of a bit of a spy, um, you know, espionage um esque, a bit like alias by the sounds of it. Um this will be a TV series on Netflix, yeah. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, so so no date yet. They haven't started shooting, it's just been announced uh on Netflix. Um, so um, yeah, it's it's it's good. I mean, for more than anything else, it's good that they've obviously patched up their differences and um that they'll be acting together again. And I think that um they did a really good job um of convincing us that that they were father and daughter. So um I'm I'm looking forward to this.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, the dynamic between them was an important part of Stranger Things. So um yeah, no, I'm looking forward to seeing them work together again.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, absolutely. Um, we we said last week that we had um some uh some news coming uh from uh Anasi, which is the animation um uh television and film uh festival, if you want to call it that.
SPEAKER_05Uh hasn't there been a lot coming out of that festival?
SPEAKER_07It's massive. It's it's absolutely massive. I suppose the first one that we should probably talk about um is the uh the three announcements that that kind of caught everybody by surprise. Um, and we'll talk about them individually, but I'll just rate the three that um was probably the big surprises, which was um crypto. Uh these are all DC animated uh series. So we're getting crypto, we're getting Joker, laugh, riot, and we're also getting an absolute Batman, which was absolutely um a surprise for everybody. That they they kept that one really, really, really secret, didn't they?
SPEAKER_05Yeah, well, it's um unprecedented in comic book stuff that uh um a storyline, um, a mainline story or Elseworlds or otherwise from either of the big companies has been um I guess converted into uh uh a television or film media so quickly. Um you know, we're still we're still inside, you know, two years worth of issues of the the main comic book. Yeah, we still haven't had still haven't had 25 issues of of of the of the comic itself. So no, um no, yeah, it's it's huge news, but I I really um am excited by this. Um I'm I'm excited uh that they're sort of striking while the iron's hot and interested to see what's gonna come of it, frankly.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, I mean yeah, if you look at um uh other works, right? If you look at say something like uh Invincible, I mean that took the end of a series, which was over a hundred issues, um, for it to for you before it even got picked up. So, like you say, for this to be under two years um uh from inception, uh this is phenomenal. Uh and they've obviously been working on it, you know, earlier.
SPEAKER_05Um yeah, I'm I'm trying to think of other, you know, sort of comic book properties that have had adaptations so so quickly, and there's not many that spring to mind. Um, you know, perhaps like Naomi, there was a TV series um on based on Brian Michael Bennis's character. That was very that was very quick. Yeah, um, but uh I I just I really can't think of one that's happened this quickly. And um no, as I said, I I think it's I think think it's exciting. Um one of the the great uh benefits of the the absolute series, not just Batman, but all of them, is that the pace of it has been so fast, yeah. They just keep their foot on the pedal. And um, I think that this is just another example of that.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, and I and I think too that you know the likes of the likes of um uh you know Invincible has has really helped to to to push more adult um esque you know uh animation. I mean we've seen that with creature commandos as well, that's done exceptionally well. Um and season two's around the corner for us, so um, which is super exciting. Uh so yeah, I'm I'm I'm really excited about that. Uh you know, I I have seen a little bit of crypto, um, just an image of crypto. It it it this is definitely geared towards kids. Um and and crypto's a bit of a bit a bit crazy, um, as as the dog this time round. Um so it's probably not not for me, um, but uh you know, hopefully it'll be really popular for the kids. And then um Joker Laugh Riot, which was another real surprise, which is uh an anime um that's that it's coming out. So uh so and um yeah, he looks creepy as. So um from the image.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I think I think that's got great potential as well. Um, I really enjoyed both the the Batman Ninja films, yeah. Um the animation and the story in those was amazing. Um, and the Joker was definitely a highlight as a character in those as well. Um he was pompous. Yeah, well, and I think that's why I'm excited about it. Um, you know, anime's very brave in terms of you know going very crazy and being creative in ways that um I think Western animation just sort of uh it isn't always brave enough to to adventure towards. Yeah, um, and so I I think it's a really exciting um uh matchup. Uh yeah, I'm I'm I'm pumped to see that.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, agreed. 100% agreed. Um more news. Uh D Seeks just seemed to just like just churn these out. They that they were just waiting for this opportunity. Um but we also got uh a first well, not so much a look, but we we definitely got a uh synopsis on uh the uh the superpowers animated series that's that's gonna be coming out.
SPEAKER_05So yeah, I saw that there was some I thought that saw that there were some images, but I didn't really recognise too many, or if any, of the characters in them.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, so so I I mean the the the show will center around uh younger heroes. So I don't know whether this is geared like to uh a Teen Titans sort of market or whether that's going to have a younger look but but uh a more adult content. I'm guessing it's going to be more towards the Teen Titans. Um but they're that they're they're young heroes attending Justice League Academy, um where the where they that they you know they become fully licensed superheroes, where they learn to be fully licensed superheroes, um under the guidance of um of uh instructors like Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman, Black Canary, Mr. Terrific, and more. Um and so among those students revealed so far is Black Lightning, uh Jesse Chambers, Plastic Man, Terra, Aqua Girl, and Guy Gardner, which is an interesting one.
SPEAKER_05Um so black lightning, black black lightning's an interesting one as well, because he's not yeah, you know, usually usually part of that sort of younger group of k of heroes.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, yeah. So so from what my from what I understand is is that as they go through their education of superpowers, they they continue to level up. So they get they get more powers as they go. So as they learn, their powers increase. So um, yeah, that's that's that's that's I'm I'm kind of trying to work it out how that works. Because if your powers are your powers and they've always had powers, are they holding them back? Are they got well, they're wearing a collar that only grants them certain amount of power, and then you know, as they as they go on, you know, they they they're allowed more. I I'm not too sure, but um, yeah, it's an interesting, interesting take. Um, and like I said, I think this is more geared towards uh our um our sort of I would say our Teen Titans market.
SPEAKER_05Okay, yeah, well I'm it I'll definitely give it a look anyway.
SPEAKER_07So yeah. Um yeah, the other one in uh in in DC animated news, uh which uh which which I I I wasn't expecting this. Um I was expecting an animated uh film, but we're at with the uh regards to the dynamic duo, which will have uh night uh Dick Grayson and Jason Todd in it. Um did you hear the the the the style of animation that this is going to be?
SPEAKER_05Um I've heard all along that it's it's meant to be a blend of like uh animation and puppetry and yeah, stop motion and stuff. Yeah, um so I'm I'm fascinated by the the concept. Um it's been in develop for in development for a long time. I'm yeah just trying to see some stuff.
SPEAKER_07Well, they've started they've started releasing some sort of behind the scenes of um uh of of uh a city building and you know a bus and things like that, so which is interesting. I wonder whether this is going to be very much on the same line as what we got with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Mutant Mayhem, where we had that sort of you know stop motion-esque style.
SPEAKER_05Uh it was all it was all still animation though, wasn't it?
SPEAKER_07Yeah, yeah, yeah, it was.
SPEAKER_05Um I'm as I said, I'm really eager to see it because I I love Mutant Mayhem. I thought the the film was great. Um I'm really hoping we get more of that uh for the turtles, but um, yeah, and I'm I'm just dying to see some of it because it sounds fascinating to me. I'm a fan of um uh puppetry and stop motion and animation and um you know anything that blends all of those things together. I can't quite get my head around, but um, in an exciting sort of way. So yeah, yeah, I'm just I'm just dying to see some of it.
SPEAKER_07Well, I mean, we we we're definitely seeing in animation the the risks that are now being taken um on trying to push the envelope. And I think that the Spider-Verse, you know, films are the ones that have sort of really changed the outlook on how they should be should be done, you know, creatively. Uh and when we we've we've we've talked um you know lovingly about the um the mall series where they were really pushing the envelope when it came to trying different mediums like smoke machines overlaid with animation and things like that. So um I'm I'm excited to see what this looks like. Um it's it's a huge plate that um that DC are serving up when it comes to animation, which is um really surprising considering that you know how they're treating a lot of the rest of their property. Um this is uh from Warner Brothers. This is this is a really interesting take, but I'm I'm excited to see what the future is for DC animation, that's for sure.
SPEAKER_05I'm really excited by it, and I'm really interested to see how it's um yeah, it all sort of unfolds. Um yeah. I I've I've really been enjoying the the unfolding DC universe under James Gunn. Um, I really like Creature Commandos, I love Peacemaker, um, I obviously love Superman. Um, I still haven't seen Supergirl, unfortunately, because of this bug that I've had, but I'm hoping to fix that up tomorrow. But um I I I think I mean the concept originally was that all of this stuff is going to blend and contribute to the same universe, you know, whether it's animation or whether it's live action or um and I I just I'm interested to see.
SPEAKER_07how it all gels together i guess around the the live action stuff um and bolsters it up and and sort of supports the story as a whole um i think it's really exciting yeah i i i agree with you 100 um uh while we're while we're talking about dc massive rumor um so uh this this this is sort of just dropped today and i'm not too sure if you heard about it um we've got a a a very very strong indicator of who our next batman will be as part of the james gunn universe have you heard about this no i have not okay so it's um so the strong rumor that's coming out and it's really interesting because about 11 months ago uh james gunn uh was in an interview and he was talking about uh david cornsweat and um how he had uh it just been announced about him and they were asking you know if there were any other really strong contenders um and uh and he started to wax very lyrically um about uh one person in particular and how he would love to see him as part of the universe and that's um tom Britney um so um I'm not too sure if you know who Tom uh Brittney is um I'm not sure that I do yeah so he's an English actor um you know he's he's in his 30s um he hasn't really he's he's there's a new uh TV series coming out soon called Westies um which he'll be in uh uh which um they've they've started to promote promo uh promote now um he was in a uh in a sort of a uh uh like a world war uh film called Greyhound um but what I know him from uh is he's in a um uh an English TV series uh called Grantchester uh so um uh which has uh Robson Green with him yeah uh in it so um where he played a uh a Vicar who uh solved uh murder mysteries with uh Robson Green who was the uh police detective and I think it's set in the 19 I want to say the 1950s or 60s.
SPEAKER_05Yeah I've seen I've seen images from that show and that that that timeline seems seems to check out.
SPEAKER_07Yeah so so yeah he's he's he's known but he's not known if that makes sense you know um so he's a bit he's a bit like David Cornsweat where we where we have you know he has been in stuff but this is kind of the big the big thing right um and and like I said he was talking about him 11 months ago he was definitely on the list of um uh you know he was in like the top three uh of of of fan theories um of of that he could be uh but there's very very strong rumor and there's been a quite a few sort of backing that rumor now um that he's going to be the next Batman. So watch this space um hopefully we'll be able to talk about it um next week and it not be rumor but um yeah it's it's it's it seems like it's it's it's pretty plausible at this stage. Okay well as we always say when it comes to these DC casting things when when James confirms then then that's when we know then that's when it'll be but um look at it right there's often buzz beforehand so yeah um yeah no there might be something to it interesting yeah yeah very very interesting indeed um it on on other news uh we um really really interesting news actually uh a um you know we we always like to talk about how um the uh somebody who may have purchased uh an an item uh from from goodwill or somewhere like that and uh we we've we've talked about the uh the the famous superman comic that uh ended up being uh quite significant amount of millions of dollars and um all being hidden up in a in a base in in in in a in an attic uh and um this time round this is a really interesting one where we've got a uh a He-Man figure so original 1983 He-Man figure still uh on mint on card uh and and also um you know in plastic and uh it was um I think at the time it was sold for five dollars ninety nine or something like that in the US um and it's just been sold uh for eighty uh thousand dollars so um that's a that's a tidy little investment right there um that's not bad yeah there's no there's no details on to uh as to you know uh whether this was a collector who had uh you know had this um you know and just had has been looking after it and decided to sell it um but yeah that's um that that's that's rather interesting uh nonetheless um I still have I still have such fond memories of those original masters of the universe figure packages um I still I still have vivid memories of going into the I don't know why but the there was it used to be a toy world at Doncaster shopping town and my parents used to take us there some weekends and every time I went in I always checked in the same spot because I knew where the Eman figures were and I can just remember how those um packets felt how they smelt um yeah I just have such fondness for those yeah I I still do it now so yeah no I'm yeah it's it it's amazing how um you know toys and that sort of thing can can take you back. Yeah uh absolutely um we've got some more news um when it comes to animation um another one I'm not too sure whether you saw this um but we're getting a uh Conan the Barbarian um uh animated series yeah Gendi Kart Tardikovsky um yeah who did primal amoride jack and clone wars and and also primal did you do you ever watch primal I've watched a little bit of it yeah but I need to amazing I need to catch up on the rest. Yeah yeah amazing so this is great i i look it's right up his alley um you know the animation's gonna be amazing uh it's a great storyline to jump on if you if you like uh those other ones that we've just mentioned before um I think especially primal I think I think this is gonna be a a really awesome um series so it'll be short it'll be I I imagine it'll be short like primal where we only get like six episodes um but I think they'll be really meaty and and and quite compelling uh to watch so um yeah I'm excited by that because because some of Gendi's um like Clone Wars stuff from back in the day is still some of my favorite Star Wars like I don't think uh it's regarded as canon anymore but um it certainly is in my fandom because yeah I I some of that stuff is just is gold well that that that that whole mace windu scene when he takes on all the bots yeah crazy yeah no some of some of the some of the battle scenes in it um yeah are just amazing but even the the character designs like um yeah yeah the gap character design of of mace windu and Yoda um uh just amazing yeah I I'm I I love that stuff so as you say I think it's perfect for Conan and um I'm I'm really looking forward to that too. Yeah agreed um it just uh uh one other thing is um that I that I found really interesting and we we keep talking about TC um I've got a little bit of Marvel news next um but um DC Studios has confirmed um that uh the actors who have been cast as dark side Mr. Miracle and uh and in the Mr.
SPEAKER_05Miracle series animated series um will also play the live action uh uh character in the DCU so that makes sense that's that's that's really interesting news right because usually we don't we don't have the actor who does the voice playing it live action but this is very much um in synergy of each other I think there's been you know we've we've sort of seen precedent for that happening in the DCU uh previously um if you watch a show like creature commandos and and keep keep an eye on the actors that are playing those characters um I think they've cast them partly because of their voice talents but also because um if they decided they wanted to bring them into live action um the actors that they've cast in those roles you know certainly could play those characters yeah you know I'm sure we're gonna see characters like you know Frankenstein and um uh the bride and that sort of uh character in live action at some stage um and so I'm I'm I'm not surprised about that at all. They're still being very tight-lipped about who these uh castings are though aren't they?
SPEAKER_07Yeah they are and I mean we get Mr.
SPEAKER_05Miracle later in the year I think it is so uh yeah that's that sounds about right I'm really excited for that series yeah yeah yeah I I am as as well uh so so yeah that's um that's that's that's really good to hear and I mean you're right I mean David Harbour played um uh Hellboy uh even though it wasn't a a fantastic film um you know uh I can see how he could very easily slide into the Frankenstein um totally this monster you know role um based on you know his his portrayal of Hellboy as well so um yeah so yeah so that's multiple castings in in creature commandos like the the character as I said the the the character of the bride in creature commandos the actress that plays her her her name is has escaped me unfortunately but she was in um game of thrones uh she was also in uh the Obi-Wan series um and when you when you see that actress excuse me um you can you can certainly see how how she could play like that character in in live action very easily is it is is it Indira in Indria Indira is it Indira Varma Varma yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah that's the one um yeah yeah she'd be perfect in live action and there's there's um several other castings in that show as well that that that would be just as effective in live action yeah yeah I can I can definitely see that um you know it it's um it it's it's the same with Alan Turdock right because he um he plays uh he plays a robot doesn't he so um GI Robot G I Robot so I can definitely see him uh in that in that role as well um and um we've we've we've had uh others who have played played characters before that have popped up in creature commandos so I think it's gonna become more and more normal I think um you know it there's certainly been characters in the DCU that have been voiced by other um actors and uh before they play uh before they're cast in live action it's not always going to be the case but um it's definitely going to be fun to keep an eye on the castings for the animated shows um with an eye towards perhaps those those actors playing them in live action um yeah it's just a whole whole different level of of of intrigue for fans yeah I I don't know if you ever watched the TV series but she was um Indro's was was also in uh human target with Mark Valley uh okay and um so mark valley was supposed to be in the first season of um oh it's now escaped me um one of my favorite shows and I've just completely forgotten what it's called um anyway I'll I'll remember it in a sec.
SPEAKER_07Uh but he and fringe sorry in fringe uh there in the big blue house so fringe it was fringe uh so mark valley was supposed to uh be in fringe uh and he was in the pilot and turned up I think in the second episode and then he got booked uh for uh human target um which is another another DC property yeah which which they just had a series just recently was which was awesome um which had fire and ice in it um and um so so and she was in that for the second season which was which was great so um okay yeah really really good series though if you haven't yeah she's a really good actress she she had a sort of a small short role in the Obi-Wan Kenobi show but she was she was really really good in that yeah and she was in game of thrones she was Pedro Pascal's wife wasn't she if I remember uh yeah wife or sister one of the one of the uh she was the mother of the sand snakes oh that's right that's right yeah no she was she was really really formidable yeah yeah so um yeah on um moving on to d on to uh Marvel news uh it looks like we're getting a we're getting some um uh strong indicators that uh they're moving forward now with um black panther three um so I know that um that Ryan Coolidge was was has sort of earmarked that as his really his next real big project after after X Files gets up and going. And um so there's a there's a little bit of um uh sort of speculation on what that's looking like based on some of the interviews that he's he's had of late uh and he's looking at uh exploring what we've been talking about on the show so he must be listening and watching um clearly that um it's it's going to be that coming of age for T'Challa's son uh so uh and taking on the mantle of that uh and so if you give that time period there could be a a a period where they could really show that because we really didn't see um I can't remember to charla's uh wife's name in the end I can't remember her name but um we didn't see her really in the second uh in the in the second film um so she could have quite easily been away with child um or had a child and the time that's passed is enough to you know bring in a you know young Avenger if you want to call them that I can't remember I've only seen Wakanda forever once um I need to watch it again so I'm not I'm not not too clear on the details but yeah I think it's gonna be really interesting to see what um direction they take Black Panther 3.
SPEAKER_05Um it's it's been a difficult sort of story for them to navigate um since Chadwick Bozeman's unfortunate death uh devastating death yeah um uh so I'm interested to see sort of uh I I think more than the second movie this this third one is definitely going to give us an I uh an idea of uh what uh trajectory the whole wakanda verse is gonna to take in um the future of the MCU and I'm really excited to see it because it's a really important part of the the MCU um uh story and yeah I'm dying to see what they do with it next.
SPEAKER_07Yeah I 100% agree. Um only other news that um is worth talking about um is a little bit of toy news and um uh uh friends of the pod uh the right and adult podcast seemed to the ones who broke the story before everybody else um and um but it's worth talking about which is uh I know I'm not too sure if you've seen it which is the uh the San Diego Comic Con uh exclusive uh that's coming out from um from Hasbro uh sorry from uh from Mattel with um skeletor I did see it yes yeah so Jim Jim Bro Skeletor uh so for those that uh have seen the film you know what we're talking about for those you haven't um it's not really a spoiler but we will you do get to see uh skeletor um uh pump an iron in the gym uh couple of couple of skeletor a couple of skeletor variants we get to see don't you yes yeah definitely a variant and uh yeah he's um and it's a great it's a great scene and um I I I think this is a this is a great idea for an exclusive uh for um for San Diego Comic Con so um yeah look um it's it I and uh I I I know that uh the guys on the on the podcast they they they saw it on Reddit um and uh and jumped on and posted straight away and they seem to be the first so um congratulations to them for um for bringing it to everybody's attention but um I did see their poster was a was a good one yeah but um yeah I'm I'm I'm looking forward to uh to for it to to come out um and uh and and I I mean it'll be really interesting to see how much it's gonna be right so um that's that's that's the real thing um but um I'm hoping that it does really well because my dream is to get the the office worker one oh yes yeah but but what whatever they do they they need to do it in uh a scale where you can see all the details because from memory his shirt's got like um you know sort of bone patterns or his tie does or both yeah um I want to say his name tag um yeah I think it had Skelly on it didn't it yeah it did yeah yeah yeah when we walked out of the movie um I I I remember saying to producer Kim and my boys um I I'm really hoping that they do some action figures or some Funko pops or something for the skeletal variants because yeah yeah the Jim Bro one's really cool and and I I get that he'll he'll sell really really well and yeah um as he should but yeah yeah it's the the office worker one for me. Yeah yeah I I I I I agree with you on that one. Uh yeah so uh we'll we'll we'll have some news for you in in coming weeks anyway um San Diego Comic Con's um coming up that's uh between July the 23rd and the 26th uh so um yeah get get ready for a uh a tidal wave of um all things pop culture news uh in the always a good time of year yeah always a good time of year lots to announce uh lots of lots of lots to appear uh also um so yeah look let's uh let's let's see what that what that looks like um uh i i I don't have any other news do you do you have any have any any news at all no well i I think look like I said mentioned earlier I'd I've been so out of it I haven't made any notes or anything I've I've uh yeah not not been up to my usual um already subpast standard this week so would you would you say you feel a little bit weird yeah I guess I would yeah all right well that that makes a great segue into how's that that's terrifying is that your hands yeah that my delicate hands definitely not no no no that's just stuff of night I've had nightmares like this I I took a page out of Robert Enker's uh book so uh on that one yeah no I can I can see that and I appreciate it but no so we're back with another weird files and um we're really um we're really excited to see uh that everybody's so excited about the weird files other than MJ um uh but um look you you've you've got to admit that they um you know the last couple have been pretty good so far we've had a uh car park wrestling we've had uh we've had the fake tour guide um so uh so yeah hopefully uh hopefully this week is uh up to the same caliber as uh as as others um they all blend into the one pastice of beige uh boringness for me so I don't know well well you know what it's it's it's i I think I think what you're always looking forward to is Florida man uh I do like that because guess what he's back he's back for another week uh Florida man has been arrested for uh building emotionally uh an emotional support tiki bar in a Walmart car park.
SPEAKER_05An emotional support tiki bar.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, for for uh in the parking lot for stressed out shoppers. Okay. Uh so police have arrested a Florida man after authorities say he constructed a tiki bar in the middle of a Walmart parking lot uh and began offering therapy mojitos uh to frustrated customers in the parking lot in the parking lot according to witnesses the man uh spent most of the afternoon greeting uh greeting drivers with uh uh with um uh asking them uh how rough their uh grocery trip had been uh police say that the uh the the makeshift sta tiki stand included a um a um what is that oh a bam uh uh it included bamboo roofing uh uh it's your crappy story man what's that it's your crappy story man but they included bamboo uh bamboo roofing string whites folding bastels and a uh cotton menu featuring drinks and here's the names for you so there was the uh there was the uh the child support uh colada there was the uh the rollback rum uh run uh rum runner and then there was the self-checkout survivor which he had on offer customers reportedly wind up after uh the man began handing out uh free uh free samples uh to people leaving the store visibly angry who's taking free samples from a dude in a in a parking lot serving drinks out of the back of a van I know right uh so uh one free is free right yeah that's right uh one witness told police i i came out uh for batteries and somehow ended up discussing my divorce with a shirtless guy named Coconut Brian at Brian uh authorities say that the man claimed that the bar was a public service after seeing two indie stressed parents arguing uh near the garden center the operation the operation finally ended after officers noticed several shoppers sitting around the tiki hut uh chanting one more round uh police police reports that the man remained extremely cooperative during the arrest and allegedly asked officers if they would like a drink on the way out well all I can say to that is cheers florida man so uh yeah I I think that's um I think that one's a great one but look if if anything well done Coconut Brian uh and you're uh you know being a public service to to the district we need to get coconut we need to get coconut brian together with the wrestling dude yeah I I want a t-shirt now coconut brian's uh Walmart uh tiki bar on it on it so uh I think that'd be a great great shirt for merch we can get the tiki bar sponsorship on the back and the wrestling stuff on the front that'd be great yeah love it that'd be amazing that'd be absolutely amazing but that's another that's another weird files uh from us to you uh we uh I hope you enjoyed that one uh I I I know I did probably a little bit too much actually me me or other people nobody's asking you okay but uh you can uh you can hit us up on uh Pump Contrapod uh on all our socials if you've got a uh if you've got a story that's uh you think is worthy of uh jumping on the weird files uh definitely let us know we we would love to uh to feature that uh I thought you were gonna say we would love to have an interesting one one day but uh look uh it's um it's it's it's always uh it's always good to uh to have a bit of a laugh and uh I think that's what uh that's what I enjoy so much about the weird files is the uh this is true weird and wonderful that's for sure uh that is true hey uh we've got a little bit uh in the tomb uh for this week uh okay so uh I haven't uh I haven't got a um a banner as of yet unfortunately um but I'll uh definitely have to get one in the in the coming weeks. Sorry everyone I've I've let down the team um something to look forward to but uh next week I'll uh I'll have a uh a tomb uh tomb banner for us um but uh according to uh multiple reports now um and we have talked about it in the in the past that uh the uh the two actors that uh played uh imatep and uh anoxunamun are um are actually uh have signed uh their uh their contracts and um uh and there's uh a strong rumor that this will be announced at uh San Diego Comic Con uh the whole cast will be announced there so I believe that they are taking uh uh center stage uh at uh at San Diego Comic Con so uh at Hall H, yes so it would be interesting to see uh what comes out of uh those announcements but uh that's the uh the very very strong uh indicator that uh that they will be back and if that's the case it'll be a really interesting story um how they're going to bring both of those characters back because they definitely put them to bed very very nicely by the end of uh uh end of uh uh uh number two uh film two uh the mummy returns so uh so yeah that's the whole point of mummies isn't it that they come back yeah they yeah they wrap themselves up and out and out they come again so uh so yeah that's that's that's really great um that's great news if that's the case um and uh looking forward to seeing where that that that that takes us uh for the mummy for so that'll be that'll be a panel to look forward to um especially if they're doing Hall H.
SPEAKER_05That'll be awesome.
SPEAKER_07Yeah I'd I'd I'd love to be there to to to to to witness that I think that'd be be a a lot of fun.
SPEAKER_05Yeah it's not too late who hook us up San Diego Comic Con.
SPEAKER_07Yeah yeah we're we're ready passports in hand we're good we're good I packed once I've already packed waiting we're just waiting for you that's probably yeah no hook us up yeah and uh um unfortunately we uh we don't have uh any uh moss is leave mail bag uh this week um no just uh just unfortunate that uh that uh mj wasn't feeling so well um i i I did um I I did do a poll um or it was actually a recording I went on the street and recorded um the response uh of people when I said that we weren't going to uh feature Cyril this week and this was their response I can't I can't say any more than that if the pulp nation is clapping and cheering for no Cyril then we've got to give them what they want so cheap cheap sound effects that's what we're going for well I I gotta tell you and not only will Cyril be back with a vengeance next week I will be back with a vengeance next week um you know I might be it might be 70% of of capacity at the moment but uh next next week I'll be coming back at 150% and and MJ mj shadow lord you're not gonna know what he show will it be like me with my uh my uh public service announcement when I had my red bull just prior yeah it's gonna be teeth and blood all over the place well looking forward to uh to you circling the waters next week uh but uh yeah get get ready for that next week uh uh pulp nation we we we look forward to having the uh most I'll say mailbag uh back with us next week which will be grace yourselves uh a lot of fun um uh where before we uh before we get into uh the aisle uh maybe uh let's go to a uh a quick commercial break every night alex rogan dreams of going far away you really are leaving him aren't you tonight he will go further than he ever dreamed welcome to Rhylos my boy he's one in a million but the odds against him are a million to one alex rock is the last starfighter rated PG starts Friday at select theaters check newspapers for locations there you go what a classic film that is that's not a segue into our um uh reading reading stuff on the aisle is it uh definitely is for sure absolut I wouldn't have it any other way um uh I uh do you do you want me to go first and then uh seeing we've we've already uh had that nice little segue there yes I would like you to do that please yeah absolutely I um uh I'm I'm I'm all down for that actually uh so um as you saw the uh the last Starfighter uh which was a uh 1984 uh film uh was uh was a big hit actually uh 15 million dollar budget and uh did uh over 160 million dollars uh I think it was at the time which was a lot of which was actually yeah definitely definitely uh definitely money that's for sure uh it's um it uh was uh was a was a was a great film and uh it's uh it was it's about a um uh about a teenager uh Alex Rogan who is uh playing a video game uh and it just so it just so turns out that the uh the video game is a uh a uh a a recruitment uh exercise for to join the uh the starfighter command uh and uh and and and fight um in the uh in space uh and so he is uh recruited by a uh uh character um named centauri uh which was played by rot preston um and uh he ends up uh alex ends up teaming up with um david uh uhly i think is uh you pronounce his name uh who went on to uh to uh being the uh the old guy villain in uh uh Robocop uh one and two so um but uh yeah I I'm I'm talking about the film but not about what I've actually read uh this week I managed to uh to get my hands on uh the last star fighter movie adaption uh so this is um this is a fantastic book um and if you uh if you've uh watched the film then you'll really enjoy this um if you love uh 80s cartoons uh sorry 80s uh comics uh then you'll definitely love this this is done uh by uh mad cave uh and it's a compilation of the uh three uh it was a three issue limited series uh that they brought out of from the film it was a and adapted from the actual film itself with a couple of little creative licenses um uh in there uh the the the book overall is um you know a staggering uh 80 page book uh which is really nice um and it's uh the original printing of it uh you've got it's a it's a reproduction of the adaptation from back in the day isn't it exactly yep 100 is it's been it's been a out of print for decades yeah yeah that's right that's exactly right um and so you've got um you know uh you've got brett uh brett blevin and um and tony uh salmans on doing uh the art on this and so you know you know that you're in you're in good hands when it comes to this um and uh it's it's yeah it's just a lot of fun um the the the colors are you know saturated and and and and terrible and um it but it's it's just really it's a fun read and um yeah it just just brought back a lot of nostalgia for me really i i really enjoyed the last star fighter i think i watched it a couple of years back and um you know it hasn't dated it hasn't dated well um uh as in like for effects and things like that but still what a great what a great um what a great fun you know entertaining film that it was i would be surprised if i've i've seen it in the maybe the last 35 years yeah right i know i've seen it more than once because it was it was one of those movies that yeah we was on rotation when we were kids but um yeah i'd be interested to see it again and i'd definitely be interested to see the uh the comic adaptation i'm a bit of a fan of brett blevins um yeah he did a lot of work on i think it was like the new mutants and uh maybe power pack and and some of those marvel titles from back in the day um and i was a big fan of um of of his art so um yeah i'll have to check it out yeah for sure so um so yeah that's the that's the only thing i've been reading this week um i'm uh looking forward to getting my hands on mask uh and reviewing that next week along with uh some gi joe um which is on the top of my pile because i've got a bit bit to catch up on there yeah nice i i've been reading bits and pieces but not heaps i've been sleeping a lot this week so i haven't been reading it or watching as much as um as i usually would um i did however um uh uh read a local book um i posted it posted about this on socials uh this morning i think again my brain's not working all that well but um no i ran into um uh a customer at um the shop who was also a creator um uh uh sam sam ryan or sam sam joe ryan is credited as as the the writer of um of this comic i'll show you the cover for our video viewers um it's called overload um and yeah i just got to chatting with sam in the the shop and um uh was really intrigued to to find out what it was that um uh he and his uh collaborator the italian artist uh niccolo um illappi um had produced and um i have to say it's a really fun time um i i was reading it this morning and and i have to it like the artwork reminds me of and i know this is a big call but it reminds me of daniel warren johnson um uh which you know he's one of the most sort of you know red hot artists of of of the day so um i was a little bit apprehensive about saying that but it's true um especially some of the action stuff in this this book um yeah wow yeah it's it's a it's a superhero book it's about people with powers um you know sort of wild uh costumes and names and um and all sorts of stuff but it's a really great read um i i I don't know all that much much more about it um other than I I I think that there's a second issue um being worked on um and I hope that's the case because yeah I really loved it and I thought it was a really great read so um although I've been unwell I I haven't not been reading but um yeah yeah but but as I said overload um it's available from um all star comics Melbourne from the local section not a sponsor but is not a sponsor but but pays you yeah it's it reminds me actually I I meant to do another post this afternoon Nate but um yeah your books your book's back on the shelves at all star as well no way it is get out yeah hard boiled at uh issue one and two are now available again from all stars so issue one and two looking guys written by me and an amazing art by Luke Andrew uh it's uh just to give you a very quick premise a bit of a plug even but you know even though we're not doing the shout uh it's uh it's about a uh a an adventurer uh named egg who is actually a an egg with arms and legs uh sure is who who uh who is is like indiana jones uh however he's uh he uh he finds artifacts and sells them to the highest bidder uh along with his um with his uh co-conspirator uh or his sidekick as he likes to call him kung fu joe so um that's that's pretty much in a nutshell and it's um it's a fun ride uh lots of puns uh lots of um callbacks to uh nostalgic film and tv um and uh with with some with some amazing art from luke so um a very very good very good read if you're into uh the the things that we talk about on this on this podcast oh definitely definitely for sure as i said i'll i'll do it i'll do a post afterwards because yeah all all i'll say is that it's uh it's it it's in good company as you will see oh right next to yours yes indeed did any sell no no not today it'll have cobwebs on it for a while i'm sure yeah i was gonna say give give it give it a half decade and we'll see how we go yeah sure why not let's let's they look they look nice though but yeah yeah i bet they do i'll yeah no they're great i'll do it mostly every yeah yeah we we we've we uh one of those covers is actually done by chamber so um uh so uh really um that it's that they're they're great covers and really love them so um yeah i'll I'll eventually finish three and we'll put it as a collective works uh with a prequel of uh kung fu jo and put it all together and uh slap it into a Kickstarter when I uh manage to get around to uh to doing that but uh you've got you've got plenty of time on your hands. They're ready to go. Uh the prequel is uh has uh has been done. Uh I've just got to finish lettering it and putting it all together um and uh the prequel uh Kung Fu Joe uh which is a uh a uh a nice uh parody or an or a uh a call back to one of my favorite films of all time uh big trouble in little china which features uh kung fu jo in the streets of san francisco so uh yeah lots of lots of fun there but uh yeah look eventually eventually we'll get around to doing it so um check check it out at all Star Comics Melbourne every yeah yeah yeah um anyway uh I think that's that's everything for uh the aisle um but again uh if uh if there's anything that uh if you've got a comic or uh you've written something or you'd like us to check it out uh definitely hit us up on uh all our socials under pulp culture pod uh we would love to uh promote any uh independent um artists or writers uh or collective teams uh or or even uh you know uh a creative studio uh that is uh doing doing books uh we're we're we're quite happy just to uh to to chat all things indie uh if you've got something that you'd like us to talk about um that's for sure and we can talk talk about local stuff all day and and we will yeah absolutely uh before uh before we get into the rewatch uh maybe we should uh have a another a commercial break we write a card in your back in the board lucky bucket easy money
SPEAKER_02Buck Rogers returns Thursday.
SPEAKER_07There you go, Buck Rogers. Did you ever watch Buck Rogers?
SPEAKER_05I did, but did he did he just say a little good old-fashioned red dogging?
SPEAKER_07Yep. What does that mean? I don't think it was the same terminology as what what we classify it now, but um I don't know what it is now, but it just doesn't sound right. Doesn't sound right.
SPEAKER_05No.
SPEAKER_07But uh yeah, I looked at it. Oh look, I don't I don't think there was anything uh bad about it. It's actually a football term, uh, which means the blitz. So there you go, red dogging. So did a quick Google search there, just uh just said just to define that so that everybody knew uh your your uh your insinuation isn't bad.
SPEAKER_05Uh it's it it says more about me than it does about Buck Rogers.
SPEAKER_07I I think you're referring to raw dogging, which is it's completely different.
SPEAKER_05You know, you you really did you really didn't have to say it on the record. I'd managed to avoid it, man.
SPEAKER_07Anyway, anyway, just just clarifying for uh for for all for all the population family show people. Uh it sure is. Uh we're keeping it, we're keeping it PG 13. Oh well, anyway, uh the rewatch. What uh what have you been watching uh this week? You were talking about uh Widow's Bay.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, Widows Bay. Uh we've I think as I said, I think we're up to episode five, so we're still what is it, five to go. Yep. Um yeah, but we're really enjoying it. Um, it's really, really good. Yeah, we haven't had a whole lot of other uh time this week. Um uh I was hoping to have seen Supergirl. Um, it's very rare that a uh superhero release, DC or Marvel, comes out and I don't see it within the first couple of days, but um I was just way too ill this week, so um, I haven't managed to get there yet, although the plan is to see it tomorrow night. So I'm really, really looking forward to that. Um, we I've I've seen now two episodes of season three of uh House of the Dragon. Um the first episode was really spectacular, it had a huge battle in it, but I probably enjoyed the second episode even more. Um it had more of that sort of you know dramatic developments and um intrigue and betrayals and um you know sort of bloody battles and all sorts of stuff in it um that that we like in in our Westeros stuff. Um I've also re-watched the last episode of uh season one of X-Men 97 in preparation for the new series coming out, um, which I think must come out Friday our time.
SPEAKER_07Yes, it does come out Friday, our time.
SPEAKER_05Yep. Yeah, so that's uh a quick summary, but that's pretty much been um yeah, the the the summary of what I've been watching this week.
SPEAKER_07So you so you watched uh four and five of Widows Bay. Um one of those is the uh the Sunset Cocktails episode.
SPEAKER_05Um yeah, it might we we have watched that episode. I can't remember if that was three or three where she had the self-help book. Yeah, that was wild.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, it was pretty wild, wasn't it? It's yeah, was yeah, no, um one of the crazier episodes, that's for sure.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, the whole time that was going on, I just I knew something was up. Um, I didn't quite realize what it was, but um, yeah, it was a heck of an episode. And then the other one was the sort of the flashback episode, which um uh I thought was really great. Um, I can't remember the name of the actress that sort of headlined that episode, but um, she was amazing. Um yeah, no, so uh we're still yeah, very much enjoying Widows Bay.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, good. And that and that story, that that that fifth episode, it definitely uh starts a new a new chapter in in Widows Bay, and that that that gets carried through. So something really to look forward to there.
SPEAKER_05Um I could sort of tell that was a leveling up of the the series. Um like it was broad broadening the horizons um uh considerably and um yeah, no, I really really enjoyed it and I'm looking forward to subsequent episodes. Um enjoy Vermarch is nice. Well, what have you been what have you been watching?
SPEAKER_07Yeah, well, uh for me, I uh I've been watching quite a bit actually. I unlike you went and saw Supergirl. Um so kept that one pretty quiet. Um and yeah, I think I'll wait until you see it and then we can have a conversation about it. Um it's it's it's very disappointing that it's hasn't done very well uh at the cinema. Um it's it's the uh lowest uh lowest scoring as in dollar wise for uh for a um for a DC film. Um so it's it's it's done 60 62, I think it's done 62, 63 million uh worldwide, uh, so including this the US. And this is the week leading up to 4th of July weekend. Um so yeah, it's a little bit disappointing that we um that it hasn't done better, um, considering the the the campaign that they've had and the money that they've spent to promote it. Um but yeah, I definitely think that we'll reserve that conversation for probably uh next week. Um when you've seen it and we can we can talk about it uh more in length uh then.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, no, I'm I'm still really excited about seeing it. I I can't wait. Um uh yeah, no, I know there's been a lot of talk around the movie, and there's been uh lots of opinions and um reviews, both negative and positive, but um my my usual uh tactic is to sort of not listen to most of them and and just go and judge for myself. So um that's what I'll be that's what I'll be doing, and I look forward to talking about it one way or the other next week.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, absolutely. And and and I couldn't agree with you more. Um uh before I talk about the next one, I should probably we spoke last week and you took me to task about my VPN and you made some demands last week. What was that demand?
SPEAKER_05Uh I it demanded that uh if you were going to talk about stuff that uh I wasn't going to be able to easily watch or read, uh, because we've we had an incident regarding uh the Ben Ten comic book as well. No, I'm just being very specific and clear here. It's not it's not just about stuff that I can watch, it's also about stuff I can read. And you know that you know that when there's something out there that I can't read, that hits particularly close to home because I'm I'm a reading guy. So all the feels, all the feels, yeah. Sorry, I'm still passionate, I'm still upset about it. But um, yeah, no, my demand was that uh if you were going to talk about that sort of stuff before you talk about it and you get me excited and you get our listeners and our our viewers excited about something, um, like Ben 10 or or like um uh My Adventures with Superman, new episodes of that. Yes, um, that you need to make sure that you uh flag those, flag that that those things that you're talking about are inaccessible to those of us uh who are um boots on the ground, salt of the earth, um you know, to the non non-1%er type types with VPNs. Um you you you need to let us know, and and preferably um in as bold and as um uh loud a fashion as possible.
SPEAKER_06Well, let me be bold. Horror meety, raise the rapid pirate nonsense flag.
SPEAKER_05Perfect. Yeah, perfect. Yeah, no notes.
SPEAKER_06No, no notes, no notes.
SPEAKER_05It's got it's got audio, it's got uh got video. Perfect. That's exactly what I wanted. Because now at least I don't I don't I don't mind you talking about you can talk about all sorts of stuff that I can't watch or read. And you chew. I just want to know about it in advance because I don't went in.
SPEAKER_07What about the voice actor that I got to do the uh the pirate?
SPEAKER_05Was it um who who was that? It was that it sounded like Daryl Summers. Was it Daryl Summers?
SPEAKER_07No, it was me. Anyway, how dare you! Yeah, well, yeah, you said you didn't have notes now.
SPEAKER_05Well, if it was if it was Daryl Summers, it was really good, and if it was you, it was beautiful.
SPEAKER_07Uh okay, I've got some things I need to talk about. Uh and you're not gonna be happy about them, but I'm gonna talk about them anyway. Uh, my Ventures with Superman season three, episode two, uh has uh has now come out. Um and it's just as good as the first one. Uh we get a Didn't you talk about this last week? I I I did. I did talk about uh an episode last week. Or was it episode three? Maybe it was episode three. Um, but uh this this this one is uh is no no it's episode two, it's definitely episode two. Uh was uh it featured uh it was very heavily on Jimmy's character. Um and uh we have a special guest appearance by Gigantor uh in this. Um not too not too many spoilers, thanks. I'm gonna watch it and they all die at the end, and they all die at the end. Um so uh and and um yeah, but this this this story is going to uh travel very much on the reign of the supermen, uh where we'll get um uh featuring those characters. We've got one now, but uh I'm guessing the rest of will come as as the uh the episodes go on. Um this is a fun ride, it's really good to to to watch. Uh I believe it is coming to ABC iView. I've actually reached out to ABC iView um to ask them um uh for for comment and to give us an indicator. So hopefully get them to hurry the frick up. Uh well, hopefully in the coming weeks we'll we'll have something that we can uh say something positive about. Um, but uh yeah, in the meantime, uh the other one that I I know that you might actually flip the table on this one is is and it's not coming out until August on uh HBO Max in Australia, uh, which is Adventure Time Side Quests. So um you've seen this as well. Yep, this is this has been released in the US.
SPEAKER_05Um I feel a bit like I feel a bit like perhaps you should have put up the warning again.
SPEAKER_06Oh hang on, hang on. Well, let's just go back. Horror meaty brings the rapid pirate nonsense flag.
SPEAKER_05Are you saying is it you saying is it is he saying it right? Are you saying vapid pirate nonsense?
SPEAKER_07The vapid nonsense flag, yeah. Okay. So it's it's his um it's his it's his pirate accent. So um, yeah, so I I have seen two episodes of uh Adventure by Pitrus.
SPEAKER_05Um excuse me, sorry, I've got a bit of a cough.
SPEAKER_07I've uh I've I've I've caused him to do go on to No please proceed.
SPEAKER_04Don't let me interrupt you.
SPEAKER_07Uh I I I won't say what they're about. I what I will say is is this is um this feels just like it felt with um uh the regular show Lost Tapes, where we where we have a revisit of a a series that um you know we weren't expecting to get anything back again. Um the animation is is is different, yeah. It definitely feels like it's catered to a younger market, but I don't think that that detracts from the storyline at all. I think the stories it just feels like we are getting a um some some new adventures of of Finn and Jake.
SPEAKER_05Um this is but this is it's younger Finn Finn.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, this is younger Finn and and and and Jake. Um so you know, Finn is a little bit more naive and a little bit more got more gusto than he probably does in the uh original series.
SPEAKER_06Um younger and dumber.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, yeah, yeah. But just just more gung-ho, right? You know, just running into running into danger without really thinking about it.
SPEAKER_05Um got no fear.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, definitely. Uh so but yeah, like I said, I I won't go into too much, but uh this will be out in August on HBO Max. I've I've looked it up just to make sure that you know this is not something that you're not going to be able to get hold of.
SPEAKER_05Um I I'm only I'm only making that face because I thought it was October.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, I from from my understanding, I thought it was uh was was August, but um I I I could be I could be wrong in when I was looking it up. Um but anyway, uh yeah, it's definitely well worth October 5. You are correct. Uh I thought it was August, but October 5. So it's not too far away. It's far away enough, but it's um it's not too far away. Yeah, well, I mean, I'll I might watch three and four tonight. I don't know if I feel like it. Um on my VPM. Uh but uh yeah, definitely uh when it when it does come out, it's it's it's well worth a watch. Uh there'll be 20 episodes. I think they're about 11 to 15 minutes each. Uh so they're short and sharp and straight to the point.
SPEAKER_05And you could a new point of order for this segment, right? Oh yeah. I'm gonna put some sort of a time limit on how you're allowed to talk about these things.
SPEAKER_07Okay. So it'll be like 30 seconds, yeah.
SPEAKER_05Well we'd be like 30 seconds tops.
SPEAKER_07So it's so it's vapid, rapid, vapid, rapid rapid, vapid, pirate, not pirate nonsense, right?
SPEAKER_05Don't change the graphic though, because it's perfect as it is. But okay, um, yeah, no, I'm gonna have to put some sort of uh new time limit on it. So um stay tuned for a new decree from from from the reigning party pooper. Come on. I'm not party pooper, I'm just trying to keep some semblance of order around this place.
SPEAKER_07Oh it's order. Oh, I love it, I love it. Uh so um, but yeah, like I said, it's it's it's it's a fun ride. Um really looking forward to for everybody to enjoy this just as much as I have. Um, it's two of us. The animation, the animation's great though. It really is. It's it's it's um it's it's really fun.
SPEAKER_05So um yeah, I really like the look of the animation, and yeah, I like that they've done something different with it. Um, I think the fact that it does take place in an earlier time to uh a bulk of what we've already seen from Adventure Time uh has opened up that opportunity, and I like that they've they've done that. I mean, what how many episodes of the original Adventure Time do we have? A hundred and something, and then we've really spin off and we've got more coming. Um, that's another thing we didn't talk about from um uh Anasi is is the Marceline and and Bubblegum series. Yeah, yeah. Um, so yeah, and I I like that they're sort of experimenting with different types of animation. Um, so yeah, I'm really looking forward to seeing it when it comes out in 2031 or whatever it is.
SPEAKER_07October 5th, uh October 6th. Um it you know what's really interesting though? Uh we've only had 10 episodes of uh the regular show Lost Tapes so far.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. We weren't meant to get we're meant we're meant to get more, weren't we?
SPEAKER_07We're we're we're meant to get 20. And and and and I don't know, I've I've looked everywhere, I've scoured, I've I've I've looked on Reddit posts, everybody's asking the same question, and nobody's got an answer as to when we get the next 10. So um I'm not too sure what's going on there.
SPEAKER_05My prediction is that they've taken a summer break. Um oh yeah, yeah. Like a lot a lot of the a lot of the shows over there sort of have a change in their programming over summer. Yeah, um, and I I'm tipping that once the um you know the summer vacation over there happen uh uh wraps up, yeah um, we'll get some more. So I'd probably just I'd probably just give it a few weeks.
SPEAKER_07So so I'd uh well that'll probably come into the prime time viewing, which is that August September. Yeah, exactly. When we get new pilots uh and return of um return of the the the the more popular shows um on on streaming and yeah so but it's like a lot of the a lot of the you know the tonight shows and stuff sort of take a bit of a break over the summer.
SPEAKER_05Um, you know, one of my favorite shows last week tonight, which is an HBO show as well, um, takes a break of a few weeks over the summer and then they all come back afterwards. So um that's my theory. It's based on based on nothing other than having watched lots of television for 50 years, but um uh yeah, that's that's what I reckon's going on. Yeah, yeah. So looking forward to more of those.
SPEAKER_07Um have you watched all of them now?
SPEAKER_05I think I don't think I've seen the last one. Um whatever that is. So I think I've only seen nine.
SPEAKER_07So you saw Boba and you've seen the stilts. Yes. Um is there one more after the stilts? Uh I think stilts was the last, was the last one.
SPEAKER_05I in that case, maybe I'm caught up. So yeah, um, yeah, no, I have I have seen them all. Um I've been pretty wild. Yeah, I'm very pleased with all of them. I think it's been great. Um uh I think they fit seamlessly into the the can canon with the other ones. Um I'm really flipped, really really thrilled to have um fresh regular show. It's the best.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, 100% agree on that one. Um, well, uh, have you got anything else that you wanted to talk about? And shout.
SPEAKER_05Uh no, well, yeah, the only other thing that I wanted to shout out is that um despite having been sick this week, a couple of days ago, um, as I mentioned last week, I did record an episode of the Film in 40 podcast um uh with the boys over there. Um, yeah, we were talking about uh one of my favorite films, The Rocketeer. Um uh and that episode will be out in a few weeks. Um, but yeah, I just wanted to confirm that um despite my poor health, um, we did manage to get that uh in the can. Um it was really nice um talking with Adam and Ryan over at the Film in 40 podcast. Um, yeah, uh great guys. They they run a really uh good, welcoming podcast. Um and yeah, that'll be coming out in a few weeks. I'll I'll let people know on our socials and and no doubt we'll talk about it on here.
SPEAKER_07Yeah. Nice. Nice how about you?
SPEAKER_05You got anything to shout about?
SPEAKER_07Yeah, absolutely. I've always got something to shout about. Um nothing, nothing vapid, you know, pirate nonsense. Um the only other thing I wanted to shout about is uh what's coming up, which is uh the uh Melbourne uh the Metro Comic Con, uh which is coming up on the uh 18th and 19th of July. So it's only weeks away now uh until that. Um we're going, aren't we? We are going. We are we are going, we'll be there. Um and uh we uh we'll will most likely be there on uh on Saturday the uh the 18th of July. Um we've got some uh amazing guests uh that are gonna be there. Uh we've got um Emily Swallow. Uh we've got um uh Linda Hamilton. Uh yeah, the armor. We've got Linda Hamilton. Uh we've got um uh we've Odead Fair. Odead Fair, um, he'll be there. So the mummy. Yeah, we've got uh Scott Grimes. Yeah, and from Star Trek, of course, Star Trek Discovery. Um we've got Scott Grimes, who's from the Orville and from American Dad, and Ted and VR and band of brothers. Yeah. Um we've got a bit of a uh Starship uh troopers uh reunion with uh Casper Van Deen and Michael Irons side, which is which is um a lot of fun. Um we've got some Some great comic talent, uh, who are going to be there. Um, we've got Brad Walker, um, who uh who's done Marvel and DC, he's done the demon um of recent. Uh Nicholas Scott's gonna be there. Um uh and um we've also got Andrew Constant um and um um Dan Picchiotto uh is gonna be there. So there's um it's it's gonna be a great day. Um very much in the in the spirit of uh of a Comic Con. Uh lots of guests, uh lots of talent, uh, lots of cosplaying and um and and opportunities for you to uh pick up uh pop culture merch um while you're at it. So um we look forward to uh catching up with uh with you there. If you do see us um uh now you know what we look like, uh definitely come and say hi. We'd love to chat to you about all things pop culture. Um and um yeah, definitely.
SPEAKER_05Have your picture taken with us. You'll look great next to us.
SPEAKER_07I'll have to uh I'll have to I had a I had some uh cosplay's uh uh you know uh idea for us. Um but I'll I'll have to I'll have to send those to you. Uh um see what you thought.
SPEAKER_05You can you can pitch whatever you like, but it doesn't mean it's happening.
SPEAKER_07But uh anyway, if you something that you want us to shout about, uh hit us up on all the socials under Pop Culture Pod. We're happy to uh to uh uh plug your uh your event uh or uh or or anything else in between. Um and uh yeah let us know. We'd love to we'd love to talk about it and uh let everybody know else know about it as well. Well uh that's uh pretty much up it for us for this week. Um it has been a bit of a short of episode, but uh it's it's I I I still think it's quality. Quality, not quantity.
SPEAKER_05Well, like I said, enjoy it while it lasts because next week I'm coming back with a vengeance and it's gonna be a six-hour long monster, I reckon.
SPEAKER_07It's gonna be like the old 80s carried over two nights miniseries, Shogun stuff duh double the Cyril, double the local books.
SPEAKER_05Oh I'm gonna have read War and Peace. Um maybe I'll watch it, rewatch the whole Lord of the Rings trilogy and I'll give you a blow by blow.
SPEAKER_07Look at that, everyone.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, so enjoy this while it lasts.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, yeah, yeah. And um uh in the meantime, I'll be playing the bongos, so you know.
SPEAKER_05Oh, no, that's the that makes us time to go.
SPEAKER_04That's what that means.
SPEAKER_05That means our what I think that means our wontons are ready.
unknownYeah.
