Welcome to the Pop Culture Podcast, your weekly dose of all things pop culture, freshly squeezed for you. I'm Nate.
SPEAKER_03I'm MJ.
SPEAKER_01And welcome back to episode 48. And feeling great.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_05I'm doing that. Feeling great with MJ and Nate.
SPEAKER_01Hey, there you go. We could be uh bingo callers.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. We're the beastie old dudes. Flipping rhymes.
SPEAKER_01You know, it's it's funny. We um uh we we we didn't check with each other and uh each other's wardrobe tonight, and so uh I'm wearing a Batman t-shirt and so is MJ. So Batman represent.
SPEAKER_05Uh I thought you were gonna say um we're we're both wearing glasses with with uh white fleck beards.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, well, you know, we we do get confused quite a bit.
SPEAKER_05We do sometimes, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, we do. So and that's and that's not of each other, that's just mentally.
SPEAKER_05So for sure, Laura Laurel and Laurel and Hardy used to get that as well. And and even sometimes I figured I can't remember who which one's Statwiller and which one Waldorf.
SPEAKER_01I'm sure Arnold Schwarzenegger and and uh Danny DeVito get confused all the time.
SPEAKER_05I don't love that comparison. I don't know. Even like which which which one am I again?
SPEAKER_01I said you were Arnold Schwarzenegger.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I don't know. I still felt I feel like you're taking the piss there. It's like calling a sh short dude stretch.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, okay. All right, well anyway. I'm on to you, I don't love it. We digress, so let's get into the zest.
SPEAKER_03What's been happening?
SPEAKER_01Uh we've got lots of news. Lots of news coming out of New York Comic Con, but we should probably hate trailers first, right?
SPEAKER_05Yeah, and I do have a little bit of trailer news.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, good.
SPEAKER_05Um, do you want me to go or do or have you got the three you want to talk about as well?
SPEAKER_01You are Mr. Trailers, so it's your it's true.
SPEAKER_05That's uh yeah, I didn't didn't go to trailer university for 10 years just not to be called Dr. Trailers.
SPEAKER_01Ten years. Um I didn't realize it was that long.
SPEAKER_05It was a long time. It's an ongoing, ongoing qualification.
SPEAKER_01Okay, you have to reset everything.
SPEAKER_05As such, as such, let's get into our our study for today. Um we've had a few trailers this week. If I miss any, um feel free to tell me. I I've skipped a couple because they were too scary for me. Um, yeah, I I watched the one for the Exorcist Martyrs, but I didn't really know what was going on there, other than that it looked really unpleasant. So um if that's something you want to talk about, then you're more than welcome to.
SPEAKER_01No, no. Exorcism films are not my bag. I I I'm uh you know, I can watch a lot of horror, but Exorcisms are just not all right.
SPEAKER_05Okay, well, as as we as we said, we've got lots of news to talk about, so so we'll keep we'll keep moving on because I'm pretty sure we'll want to talk about at least one of these. Um there's a new uh trailer for the Disney film Hex, the animated animated film. Um, I think that's gonna be big. Like it not only is uh uh there a new trailer, it's all of a sudden there's advertising everywhere, and it's not out until the end of end of November. Um I saw it go past on a bus and a tram, and it's um really yeah, like Disney are really building it up. Um they're advertising it as from the studio that brought you Frozen and Um uh Zootopia. Um, so they're obviously hoping that it's gonna be gonna be big. So um have you seen the new trailer for for Hex?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I've seen the new trailer. I think they're really trying to it feels like to me that they they they um tried to sort of capitalize on that um uh demon hunters, kpop demon hunters. It sort of sits in that sort of same sort of realm, if you want to call it that. Um and and and I I I think that you know that that popularity for K-pop demon hunters hasn't gone away. I mean, they've only just started releasing action figures and you know, lots of um lots of different pop culture memorabilia. So so there's I saw some of those.
SPEAKER_05I saw some of the action figures for that just just incidentally, I saw some of the action figures for that today. I was in Kmart and I saw some of the Mattel um action figures for K-pop Demon Hunters, and they're really good.
SPEAKER_01They're actually really good. They've got a I mean it's amazing what um what what what 3D can sort of do, you know, when they're when they're building them um now and and they can use 3D printers and you know get get the right sculpt and all that type of thing for which are pretty accurate. Um, you know, back in the day when you had your Star Wars figures, you know, Luke Skywalker had a pretty flat face, um with a pair of beady black eyes, really.
SPEAKER_05Um looking action figures. I I was tempted for a moment to buy uh one of my favorite uh K-pop demon hunters. Which which which one's your favorite K-pop demon hunter?
SPEAKER_01Um the one that wins.
SPEAKER_05I should ask, I should ask actually. Have you seen K-pop Demon Hunters?
SPEAKER_01No, I have not. No, much to the uh yeah, it's probably one of the one of the one of the ones that I just haven't made time to watch, and much to my my household's dissatisfaction because they're all uh bet there's some unhappy campers there, yeah. Um really is it really is, but anyway, you know, all right.
SPEAKER_05It's an even bigger issue than I realized. Um you should because it it's no uh in all seriousness, you should because it's a really good movie. But um, just for the record, um, my favorite uh of the K-pop demon hunters is Zoe, and that's I almost bought her action.
SPEAKER_01Well, that's that's what I was gonna say. I was gonna say Zoe's my favorite, so yeah.
SPEAKER_05Okay, you don't have to be a smart ass about it. Yeah, I'm being serious.
SPEAKER_01He's on fire, he's on fire tonight.
SPEAKER_05Okay, all right. Let's move on. Um, yeah, I I think Hex looks I think I think Hex looks really good. Um it did it does give me big like wicked vibes, and I'm just and and by that I'm just talking visually. Obviously, there's a there's a link there with witchcraft and all that sort of stuff, but but visually the the land sort of looks um but I think it's gonna be a bit like Zotopia, and then it's gonna be a you know feast for the eyes. Um uh and I sort of can't wait to um figure out what the the heart of that's story is because that you know that's where these Disney movies get us. Disney and Pixar, they get us with the the the heart of the kernel of the the kernel of the heart of the story. I'm mixing my metaphors, I think, but um I'm not sure.
SPEAKER_01I kind of got the impression that it was uh you know, you know, that the heart of the story is it's it's about friendship. So I think that's probably where you're getting that sort of wicked sort of vibe. I also um agree with you that's it it looks like there's a lot of um, you know, we see a lot of the world of there, you know, through through, you know, like the hex world. Um so I think from uh visually I think we're going to be in for a bit of a treat when it comes to what's going on in the background and you know that type of thing. So yeah, I look, let's let's hope it's a big one. I mean, it's nice when when Disney um, you know, have a have a good uh animated uh film on their hands.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, it's nice when we can all go and sort of you know join in the joy of something um communal, uh like K-pop demon hunters, I should say. You need to get onto that, Nate. Um, speaking of speaking of visually engaging uh and and visually pleasing worlds, uh Blade Runner 2099. We've got a new trailer for that TV series.
SPEAKER_01This TV series is is like it's right up there on my list. Now that Lanterns is has finished, this is probably my most anticipated TV series. This is probably in my top three anticipated TV series for this year.
SPEAKER_05So I think it's it's like a week and a half away, I think. Yeah, 25.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it's at the end of the end of the month, I think it is. So um, yeah, I'm I'm I'm really looking forward to this one. I mean, we've got Michelle uh Yo in it, and um so and I I love everything that she does, so I'm really looking forward to seeing um but I I just love the world of Blade Blade Runners, you know. Like the yeah, I've I've watched all the films I've watched um you know the animated series that they did. Uh you know, I I I just I I think it's a really and I really hope that this does well because I'd love to see more of this world. I think it's a really untapped um uh you know franchise that they could really or property that they could really do something with. Um and if they can do it through TV, it'd be amazing.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. And uh Hunter Schaefer's the other actress who I think the name you were trying to remember, I I was as well. Um, yeah, and I'm a big fan of hers too. So um, yeah, I'm really looking forward to it. I think you know the the uh the key to the Blade Runner movies is that they ask really interesting questions about the nature of who we are and humanity and um you know what it means to be human. And um, I think that's uh gonna be an endless um, you know, well of of storytelling. So yeah, I agree with you. I really hope this is successful as far as the look of it. Um it really, yeah, especially this latest trailer, really, really looks like the um the movies we've we've seen previously, both of them.
SPEAKER_01Um nothing and I'm really nothing's improved in the last nothing's improved in the last, what is it, uh what is it, 50, 60 years?
SPEAKER_02No.
SPEAKER_01No, it's it if anything, it looks a little bit more grimy. But I love that Neo-Tokyo look, you know. Um that's probably why I why I love things like um, you know, uh Akira um as well.
SPEAKER_05You know, it's just rather what about the our last visit to Neo-Tokyo? It made you think that things would be better in 50 years.
SPEAKER_01Well, I don't know, you know, like I mean, sometimes you might be thinking of Zootopia, I think. You might be you might be thinking of neo Neo Zootopia.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, because they they have hopeful endings, but the Blade Runner movies do not.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, well, you know. Um, I mean, but yeah, I mean it's it's I I think it's just great. I know I'm literally looking forward to it. I I think it's gonna be um you know one of those those TV series, a bit like Alien Earth. Um, yeah, where we've got a really good ensemble cast, um, we understand the property already, but it's okay to jump in and not have to go back and watch the films to to to um to appreciate it.
SPEAKER_04So um yeah, definitely.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, no, um hopefully it does well and and and inspires people to go back and watch the films, you know.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, well all the signs that so far point to point to something that's gonna be really entertaining. So um, yeah, I'm really looking forward to it as well. Yeah, um uh the only other trailer that I've got written down here I haven't seen yet, um, and presumably need a review because it doesn't come out until tomorrow. But they've they've started advertising uh for this today. I think they released a poster, but for uh Greta Gerwig's Narnia series. Oh yes. The first film, The Magician's Nephew. Uh, apparently a trailer's gonna drop for us tomorrow, so that'll be something we have to talk about next week.
SPEAKER_01Yep, yep. Sounds good. Sounds good.
SPEAKER_05Um but that that that certainly looks yeah, sorry, go.
SPEAKER_01No, no, no, go.
SPEAKER_05No, I was just I was gonna say I think that's um you know gonna be gonna be one that we're gonna um uh be talking about for some time. So I'm looking forward to yeah, finally getting a look at the the visuals of that.
SPEAKER_01Well, the uh original um uh was it a trilogy? Did they end up doing a trilogy?
SPEAKER_05I think they did three, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, they didn't know.
SPEAKER_05I think they're thinking really there's like five books in the series, and I think they did three movies.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that's right. But they they sort of with each movie they kind of dwindled down a little bit, a bit more and more, unfortunately. So then I think they might finish it.
SPEAKER_05I got the impression that Disney was wanting it to be as big as the Harry Potter movies, and when it wasn't, they sort of stopped supporting it so much.
SPEAKER_01But yeah.
SPEAKER_05Um that was a bit of a hard act to follow back in the day.
SPEAKER_01Yes. Uh I I I felt for any any uh any film that sort of had that sat in that kid's genre, you know, um of fantasy, it was you couldn't you couldn't beat Harry Potter, could you?
SPEAKER_05No.
SPEAKER_01It was a still phenomenon now, right?
SPEAKER_05It is, yeah. It's um we've got that show to talk about in the future as well. Um that's it, that's it for for trailers.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I think so, yeah.
SPEAKER_01The only I I think we'll we'll we'll jump into um uh New York Comic Con in just a sec, um, because we've got a lot of news to talk about there. The only one I wanted to just um highlight is is uh that we've got uh today, it was released today. I'm not too sure if you've seen it, NJ, but we had um our first look at uh Austin Butler um as uh Crockett from the uh the Miami Vice um uh and also Michael B. Jordan um as Crockett and Tubbs for Miami Vice 85.
SPEAKER_05I saw some some I saw some still photos come through late last night. I think I said some to you on Instagram. Um yeah, what uh you're you're you're a big Miami Vice um fan. What what's your verdict?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I I know that um I know that uh listener Benji, Benji Bajoric, um he's a he's a big Miami Vice fan too. And um, yeah, uh we both agree that it I mean it looks good, looks good so far. Um, you know, it's it it is disappointing that Michael Mann's not attached to it at all. Um and that they're they're they're they're basing this around the f the pilot episode. This this it looks like this film will be based around the the the groundbreaking first um pilot for the uh for the TV series.
SPEAKER_05Why was it so ground groundbreaking, like refresher America?
SPEAKER_01Well, there was lots of things that they did differently um from a cinematic point of view. So from the from the camera point of view, there was lots of um, you know, because Michael Mann's been quite um you know revolutionary in where he positions the camera. So this was the first time that a camera was positioned um at the front or the rear of the car while someone was actually driving. Um a lot of the cars in the past were you know on on a trailer and being driven around, um, whereas these guys were actually driving the car. Uh there was uh other, you know, it was it was also groundbreaking based on the fashion because this is where the fashion for Miami Vice was you know, your uh Diors and your Dolce Gabbana and your um all these really high-end, but at the time um they weren't. You know, they were these uh little Italian designer stores that the um uh the the you know that they were looking for are look and feel and um the costume designer she was holidaying in Italy and she was like, Oh, we should we should try this on, you know, and try it on. I I didn't realize that. That's yeah, yeah. So a lot of the fashion um oh and and those labels should uh are very, very grateful to um to Miami Vice because that's what what gave them their sort of first look into the US. And you know, I mean it's it's it's you you look back at history of photos. I mean, all men were wearing white suits and you know um loud uh shirts and t-shirts, you know, and so uh it became a it definitely became a uh a fashion statement. Um so yeah, there's lots of different things that that Miami Vice did that that no other TV series had done at the time. So um, and especially that pilot where you've got a nine-minute drive um where they're just prepping to go and take out the bad guys, one's driving and one's loading up the guns. It's probably one of the most boring pieces of TV that you'll ever see, but it's the most um, but it but you know, if you when when you explain it to somebody, it sounds really boring, but it's actually quite entertaining um because it really puts you in the mindset and the mood of what they're actually going to do. Um there's not a lot of conversation um at all. And so that was again was a was was kind of groundbreaking because you didn't have these long shots to explain, you know, everything was very cut quickly and fast and you know, moving on to the next thing. Um, so to have something like this and then to have uh what was it, Phil Collins in the air tonight playing over the top, um, you know, amazing, absolutely amazing. So um again, look, I'm looking forward to it. Um you know, it is sad that Michael Mann's not attached to it, but we're gonna get a Michael Mann movie next year anyway, which will be Heat 2. So I'm looking forward to to that one because we've got a massive cast, so for that.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, well, I mean, even this Miami Vice movie's got a huge cast. Uh just watching the trailer is yeah, like John W John Luiz Armo and um Edie Githigi and Walton Goggins, and um yeah, it's it's it's a really stack cast. So um, I think it looks great.
SPEAKER_01Um is it Remerz? Uh what's his name? Uh, who plays Falcon?
SPEAKER_05Um yeah, that's um his name's just escaped me, but I've got it here. It's um uh Danny Ramirez.
SPEAKER_01Danny Ramirez, that was it, yeah. Yeah, um that's right.
SPEAKER_05He looks great too. Like I like I like his hairstyle and and his and his outfit.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, very authentic. Austin Butler's like, you know, I I I think he looks the part, he looks like a uh, you know, a young Don Johnson. He's um you know, as long as he's not still sporting the Elvis accent, I'm okay with it.
SPEAKER_05Um you probably haven't seen it wasn't a massive movie, but you didn't see Caught Stealing. Um, I haven't seen Court Stealing.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that's I think that's one of that's that's a heist film, wasn't it?
SPEAKER_05It was, yeah. It's um Heist film from Darren and Aronofsky. Um I I saw that last year, and having seen that, and I don't know as much about Miami Vice as you do, but but having seen that and having seen enough of Don Johnson that it's gonna work. Um if if you if you want to get excited about Miami Vice or even more excited about Miami Vice 85, um, you should check out Court Stealing. Um it's a really fun movie. Uh yeah, it's got him and um Matt Smith and Zoe Kravitz, Regina King. Um was a really really really good film, but um that that makes me and that convinces me that he'll be he'll be fine as as um a bit like uh a bit like Aaron Pierre um in Rebel Ridge, right?
SPEAKER_01You know, you like once you see him in that you'll understand why he was Carl's Valantan.
SPEAKER_05So yeah, yeah, no, it's as I say, if you if you want to if you want to be convinced and and relax about um being alright in Miami Vice, yeah, no, check out Court Stealing, it's really good.
SPEAKER_01Yep, yep, it's on my list now.
SPEAKER_05Beautiful.
SPEAKER_01All good. Uh shall we get into some uh New York Comic On news?
SPEAKER_05There's heaps we should we we should, and I I I think we really need to keep our foot on the pedal with these because I've got I've got a page of comic book news alone.
SPEAKER_01Um yeah, I've got I've got Marvel, I've got Marvel, I've got Marvel TV, I've got Marvel Comic, well, Marvel TV and film, I've got Marvel. Marvel Comics, then I've got DC comics, and then we've got a little bit of Disney Plus. So maybe let's talk about the Disney Plus first.
SPEAKER_04Which you I want to talk about all of it, so bring bring it on.
SPEAKER_01So let's start with that because it's a short one. So um uh Artemis Fowle uh animated series has been announced. Yep. Now this is great. Disney's actually doing an animated series outside of their normal uh programming, which is really nice to see. Um and I haven't read the books. You've read the books.
SPEAKER_05I haven't read the books, but producer Kim has read the books and is a a really big fan of the books. Um she's very excited by this news.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and I believe that the so the first the first season is based on the first book, I believe. Uh that's that's what I understand as well, yeah. Yeah, and it'll be true to the true to the um true to the book.
SPEAKER_05So um Yeah, well as as as is the same, as was the same with the movie that I think sort of fell fell flat a little bit. Um it's it's got the backing of Owen Colfer, the uh author and creator of Art Artemis Fowl. So I'm sure it'll be extremely faithful to the books. Um yeah, I'm really excited about it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, same. I I'm I'm really looking forward to it, and I think it's great. And um, yeah, I I I I don't know too much about it, but um from what I from what I do understand, I don't I think it'll be great. So I'm looking forward to seeing it.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, nice.
SPEAKER_01All right, let's be eight. I believe it'll be out.
SPEAKER_05Uh yes, I haven't written down a date, but I think that's I think that's correct. Um yeah, it's still got a little way to go. But um, as we know with these things, they they tend to come around a lot quicker than we realise.
SPEAKER_01Yep. Um uh should we talk about Marvel? Should we go with Marvel first?
SPEAKER_05Yeah, sure. Well, as I said, I'm happy to talk about all of it. So yeah, go for it. What do you want to talk about first?
SPEAKER_01Uh probably the biggest announcement which is sort of setting the um the nerds on fire is the announcement of a new uh well, and we were told, I mean, you know, it was only weeks ago that Disney was saying, um, or Marvel was saying, oh, we're not doing any more TV series, and then now they've come out and said that they're going to do uh a new TV series called Zodiac.
SPEAKER_05Yes. So I I have to I have to confess I've I've I've settled down a little bit, but I was I was pretty hot on this when it when I heard this news as well.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. So there's some interesting things about this Zodiac. So they didn't really give too much about it. There's some some information that's starting to come out now. Um we're we're it we're we're years away from this. It'll be 2028 before it's out. Um they haven't they begin shooting um uh this well they're saying this spring, so that's what uh when's that? So it must be soon, it must be next year. So it'll yeah, it won't be out until 2028. So yeah, that's looking like um and they and they haven't cast for it either, I believe. So they've done this big announcement, and I'm I'm I'm a little bit unsure as to what's going on with this, whether they just wanted to just build the hype now and um and then we'll start sort of getting trickles of it. Um but from my from my understanding, it's going to be a uh British uh sorry, a British spy thriller. At first I thought it was like um, and you probably were reading similar things that it was going to be like an agents of shield, um, like follow-on series. Um and it's the the interesting part about this is is that it's got the shield logo in the A, and I think that's probably where everyone was going with that.
SPEAKER_05Um yeah. My my theory is that um like I I I never thought it was gonna be a a direct sort of agents of shield revival or continuation or anything like that. Um I there's a lot of affection for the agents of shield show. Um, you know, none more so than from me. I love that show. Um, but I I I couldn't see them going in that direction. I sort of, you know, by the s by the sounds of things, to me, there might be aspects of that. Um there might be, you know, characters from that that they that they bring in, perhaps Chloe Bennett's Quake, perhaps uh Clark Gregg's Agent Colson. Um I'd love to see that. Um, but I think that the judging by the variety of the logos that that are represented in that word zodiac, I think the implication is that it's going to be drawn from a whole lot of different stuff. Um, probably some organizations that we know of and some that we don't, and you know, introducing new stuff, I don't know. Um well my the first impression was my first impression was pretty much in line with uh sentiment on the internet. And I know like I know we try and keep things positive on on this um podcast, but um you know my initial reaction was was um you know well that they've they've not greenlit moonlight season two for this, they've cancelled Daredevil for this. Um you know, they haven't made Blade for this, they haven't all all of the things that you know we either haven't had confirmed or uh have had cancelled or have been promised and not gotten. Um and and my head's still a little bit there. Um, you know, as you say, it's it's a long way away, this show. Um uh for all we know, this might be the only announcement they ever make, and then it disappears and we'll never hear of hear from it again. Um but uh who knows? My cynical point of view, it kind of looks like they want to they they want to continue making TV, but they don't want to have to pay actors of the caliber of Oscar Isaac or of Charlie Cox and um you know Kristen Ridder, the the the actors. I mean, they can't replace Charlie Cox, so they have to pay him big dollars. You know, if they want to have Jessica Jones, they can't they can't replace Kristen Ridder. Uh if they want to have the Punisher, they can't they they they now have to have John Bernthal. And that's their that's that's that's their fault. That's Marvel and Disney.
SPEAKER_01Well, it's their fault for doing it.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, like that they they sort of can't expect that they're gonna build these things up, but continue to pay the people what they were paying them when I don't know. But it just seems to me like this is sort of uh, you know, we can we can make up this Zodiac show and put in all these, you know, up-and-coming actors that nobody's ever heard of, pay them peanuts, and because it's got the Marvel logo on it, people will still watch it, um, which from a certain point of view is true. If it comes out tomorrow, I'll still watch it. Um they're not wrong in that.
SPEAKER_01I don't know if you've actually heard this. So there was so there's a bit of info that's come out today with a little bit more of a synopsis on the show. Um I haven't heard anything today, no. It's it's being apparently it's being developed as a dark British spy thriller, which is what I said before, with three uh lead roles, so two male and one female. Um, all three will be British, and all three are not expected to have comic book counterparts, they're totally original characters. So no Alfred Pennyworth. What's that?
SPEAKER_05Well, could be no Alf no um no Alfred Pennyworth.
SPEAKER_01Well, possibly. I mean they could bring bring him into the into the fold somewhere.
SPEAKER_05IKid, of course.
SPEAKER_01Um well, who knows? I mean, um do a crossover.
SPEAKER_05We get Jarvis. Um well who who knows who all these companies are gonna be owned owned by in 12 months.
SPEAKER_01That's right. That's right. So and it says in addition, the show's tone is said to be a lot grittier than you would expect with the comparison, uh, with a comparison being in line with um FX's The Americans. Now that kind of that kind of like gets me a little bit excited if it's gonna be gritty, but you know what? Also, too, um, we've just come right off the back of a very gritty TV series by DC. Um, and I wonder whether they're fast tracking this, like you know how we you were just saying that why is all of a sudden this sort of come to the the front of the of the queue, um, as opposed to some of the other series that we're still waiting for a second season of, um, or one like Daredevil Born Again that's been cancelled. Why is this all of a sudden being pushed to the front of the queue? When I read those when I read those that line about the synopsis, I kind of go, okay, maybe they're pushing this very through quickly because um a very gritty TV DC series has just you know reached astronomical, you know, viewing rates, um, has been picked up midway through for a season two, um, has had both um you know critical acclaim from both um you know viewer as well as reviewer. Um yeah, I'm I I just wonder whether they're fast tracking it. That's what that's what I feel, right? Based on that.
SPEAKER_05First of all, if they wanted to give us gritty Marvel television, don't cancel Daredevil.
SPEAKER_01100%.
SPEAKER_05Renew Moon Knight series two. Um and and you've got Punisher there as well. Like give us a give us another Punisher TV show or give us a Punisher movie or Punisher Special. Like they've got plenty of gritty stuff going as it is. I don't know. It just it I it feels a little bit like you know, please, please subscribers, don't cancel your Disney Plus subscriptions, even though we've cancelled all those shows that you were looking forward to. Um here's this little little carrot. We're gonna be vague about what it is, because if we're vague about what it is, we can sort of slide whatever we I don't know. I I know I'm coming across as very cynical here, but I just I don't really know what they're I don't I don't really know what they're they're doing.
SPEAKER_01We've been jaded, right? Like we've been jaded in the past, and what we what we want is just a level of consistency and understanding as to what you're doing with our favorite characters, you know, and what you're doing with the properties so that we know what to expect. I mean, it's it's it's nice to be, you know, to have the surprise and delight, but at the same time, we need to, you know, if we're going to invest our our time and our money into these properties, then you need to be um fair with your audience as well. So you know again, you you know, they they anticipated to do a season four of Daredevil Born Again. Um if they hadn't, then they wouldn't be doing reshoots now to um to finalize the series. Um they they had they had left it open-ended for a season four. And they had every intention that already started the initial writers' room for season four. So um this is coming from you know executive producers and producers that are making these decisions based on ratings. And we've talked about this round and round and round, and I know you gloss over with the ratings, but it's it this is what they're that's what they're basing it on. Um then if if the ratings are dipping, then get better writers or give us better stories or mix it up so that people are going to want to come back to the property, invest the time and effort, and then you'll probably get the payoff. Um but when you flip us um, you know, midway through season two and let us know that season three will be the last season, what do you think's gonna happen? You know, like I'm really interested to see whether season three is actually gonna get um get good ratings or not, based on people are they gonna invest the time knowing it's the end of the sea uh end of the series? Are they uh are they annoyed and so they're not gonna bother because season two was really was excellent and it felt rounded enough to be the end of the season, you know, the series. Um do you know what I mean? Like what's gonna happen?
SPEAKER_05I uh and I I honestly think I honestly think that in order for me to be excited about I mean I'm excited about Daredevil season three, very but um in order for me to be really excited about it, I'm gonna need to know, I'm gonna need to have some sort of confirmation that these characters that they're hyping up and that they've been bringing back over the last three seasons are going to be showing up somewhere else. Like I'd go so far as to say if if if if we don't see, you know, uh at the very least, Dead Evil, maybe Jessica Jones in um Avengers Secret Wars. Like if we don't see them there or in some other like Thunderbolts 2 or or something, um I I'm all of this other stuff's gonna fall pretty flat because um these are the characters, frankly, like these are the characters that I want to see develop in the MCU. Um, you know, that these are the ones that I want the most. I I it it it took years for us to get them back. We finally got them back. Um if they take them away from us completely, I I'm I'm not gonna be a happy camper. Um so so so and unless they've got some sort of some sort of plan. Like it's it's all well and good to wrap up the TV and say we're moving away from making TV, but unless they're gonna push those characters into something else, by which I mean what else is there other than movies? Um I'm I'm not gonna be content. I want more Charlie Cox as Daredevil, I want more Kristen Ritter as Jessica Jones. Yeah, um and and fine, you're not gonna show it to me on television. That that's fine, but you've got to put it in movies at some level.
SPEAKER_01Um, interestingly talking about talking about bet Dead Evil Born Again. Um I found it really interesting that they made the announcement at um New York Comic-Con that the defenders were gonna be in the were going to be in season three. I mean, how much of the photos have been on the internet and how much you know confirmation we've already had, and they made this as a big deal. Like we've got the defenders back, and I I I just felt that it fell a little bit flat, um, that that was their big announcement for Daredevil Um Born Again Season Three.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, like unless and unless it builds to something like a Defenders movie or or you know the Defenders teaming up with the Avengers and the Guardians and the X-Men and everybody in you know Secret Wars or something, yeah, you know, soon soon after that. Um yeah, I I don't know where that leaves me with the MCU. Like, I mean, there's plenty of characters still in there that they they can you know play with that I that I'll I'll want to see. But I mean, we you know, we can't get a solo Hulk movie, he's one of my favorite characters. Um you know, I just I feel like Daredevil uh and and the characters surrounding Daredevil, there's so much like I don't I don't know what an I don't know what an MCU in the future is without those characters. Um and so I really hope that they've got some sort of a plan, but at this point, I really think they need to tell us what it is, um, because uh they need to stop playing with our emotions a bit. Um yeah, it's uh it's too much.
SPEAKER_01Well, what do we got? We've got we've got we've just had Avengers Endgame, we've then got Vision Quest, Doomsday, then next year we've got uh Spider-Man, uh Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man animated series. Then we've got Dead of All Born Again uh season three, and then we don't get anything until the end of next year, which is Secret Wars.
SPEAKER_05Then after X we know that X-Men's on its way, like we know that the live action X-Men is.
SPEAKER_01That's been scheduled for May 5, 2028. Ghost Rider's been scheduled for July 28, 2028.
SPEAKER_05We'll see if that we'll see if that happens.
SPEAKER_01And we'll see if that happens, and then we've got Black Panther 3, which is December 18, 2028. So we've got three really big films, and then 2029, then they've got three slated, but they don't say what they are. So again, it's hard to, you know, unless we actually know that it's happening, um, and we've got a trailer or we've got some stills in production. I'm very dubious to get too excited about anything that Disney seemed to be, or Marvel, should I say, uh, putting out at this stage.
SPEAKER_05Um set photos, set photos or nothing.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that's right. We want to we want to see some some gen. But then again, you know, it could be a DC and they could write it off. So um wait backgirl. But don't let it.
SPEAKER_05Well, it's it's not just it, I mean, that's not that's not just a DC thing. I mean, you know, Marvel have have done that as much. We mentioned Blade. There's been you know plenty plenty of stuff that they've waved in front of us and then taken away. But as I said, I just don't know how I don't know how you can hope to have like what they seem to be building towards is a complete Marvel universe within the cinematic realm. And I don't understand how you can have that without Daredevil and the characters within Daredevil's sphere. Um and I don't understand why you wouldn't. Like they they brought they brought them back from the dead. It's it's unprecedented in in entertainment and television. Like it's never happened like this before. I don't understand why they would do it. So I'm quietly hoping that there's a plan. But yeah, they better tell us what it is sometime soon, otherwise I'm just gonna get really pissed off.
SPEAKER_01Mark's raging, he's raging tonight. I am rage against the Marvel machine. Yeah, you know how we're gonna try and keep it. You know, we're trying to keep it you know pretty quick and we'd move on to the next subject.
SPEAKER_05Who said that?
SPEAKER_01We're well and truly, we're well and truly not. Um who said that?
SPEAKER_05It wasn't me, was it?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it was definitely you. Well, we'll we'll get the stenographer to go back and and reread the notes to us. Um Marvel Zombies. Marvel Zombies has been announced. Yes.
SPEAKER_05There's like is it is it is it what two like mini-series or movies, or what are we getting?
SPEAKER_01We're getting three. So we're getting uh so so it's each Halloween for the next three years, we will get a different um, we will get a different one.
SPEAKER_05Um starting starting next next Halloween?
SPEAKER_01Starting next Halloween. So we'll get uh so we get the winter soldier, which is next Halloween. We then get uh the fist of um cons uh consciousness, I don't know what that is. Um, all right, okay. As Moon. Yeah, yeah. Oh, all right, okay, gotcha. Uh, which is 2028, and then we've got the last guardian on 2029 uh 29. Nice.
SPEAKER_05So okay, it could be like we've got zombies in space galaxy or zombies in space or well, it'll be it's guardians of the galaxy because I saw the graphic and it it's in Guardians font. So um, yeah, it'll be like Guardians in Space. So that's fun. That's that's fun to speculate about because it's like who's gonna be the last one standing.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that's awesome. Um, yeah, that's Spider-Man. Uh season two, coming out January 13. Have you watched the first season?
SPEAKER_05Yes, yeah. Um Produce Kim and I watched it uh as it came out weekly, I think it was.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so good. So such a good, such a good series.
SPEAKER_05It was, yeah, great, great animation, great characterizations, some some really interesting spins on characters, and yeah, more than anything, it just it looks amazing. So um, yeah, I saw some clips from uh New Or Comic Con of the next season, and it looks awesome.
SPEAKER_01And we're getting the Symbiont, so we'll be getting Black Spider-Man, Black Suit Spider-Man.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, and I'm I'm really pumped for that. That's a great show, so that's that's exciting.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, talking about um we're talking about Spider-Man. I don't know if you saw the interview with Nicholas Cage um this week where he was talking about Spider Noir, Spider-Man Noir. I did. Um I did and so interesting, interesting why it was cancelled. Why I think we're getting more and more reason as to why season two was cancelled. And um Nick's come out and said that he wouldn't sign the AI um agreement contract where the waiver they would they that they yeah, the waiver where they would use his image um using AI. And um and uh and he said, you know, he told him to get stuffed. Well, he'll never work with them with the with with the company again, he said.
SPEAKER_05So yeah, um uh it's it sounds sounds in in the uh Australian vernacular, it sounds like you told him to get stuff.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. MJ's raging. He's he's he's he's honking out tonight. Um just begun. Yeah. Um, so yeah, I mean I'm pumped.
SPEAKER_05I'm pumped note. There's so much to be excited about.
SPEAKER_01I know there is. Um so yeah, I I I think we're getting to more to the crux of why uh Spider-Man Noir two Spider-Man Noir 2 was was was wasn't on the slate. I mean, we were always we were told that you know it's really disappointing. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Um it's not surprising.
SPEAKER_01I understand his stance though, right? I understand his stance completely.
SPEAKER_05Completely. I'm completely with him. Um and I support that.
SPEAKER_01I I I I support that, and I say, well, um, if that's the reason was cancelled, then so be it. I would rather it that way than you know go the other way.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I but it's it it is, it's it's really disappointing that um that that they would even let something like that finish that way instead of you know actually putting in the hard work to you know make it with humans. But um that's the word that's the world we're in at the moment. Um I'm sure that's not going to be the last time we hear of something like that happening.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, 100%. Uh X-Men 97, we saw where they they showed a preview of Rogue and Gambit's wedding and the return of the Brotherhood of Mutants, which is interesting. So um, I'm sure that'll that'll pop up somewhere along the line online for us to see. And there might even be a leak um shortly uh showing that. It usually does comes out about a week later, so we might even talk about it next week if it's if it's out by then. Um so and and the fans went pretty wild over that. So um X-Men 97 is hot to try. Like they've got what five seasons written, I think it is. So um, and hopefully we just this this this high continues because it's great that we're getting X-Men 97, you know, those ongoing stories from the original uh animated series.
SPEAKER_05Hopefully, they told us they had a lot of uh Daredevil seasons written too, and that didn't happen.
SPEAKER_01So well, that is true. Well, they were starting to write season four. Let's not go back there. Um do you have any other TV or movie news for Marvel?
SPEAKER_05Uh uh not not for Marvel, I don't think. No. Um Marvel? I've got loads of comic news. Um okay, no, heaps of comic news. Yeah, yeah, I've got Marvel stuff here. I can I can should we keep going with the Marvel?
SPEAKER_01Wait, just we'll go with the dark time as a light spot.
SPEAKER_05You said it, not me.
SPEAKER_01Um well, not a sponsor.
SPEAKER_05We are both wearing Batman t-shirts.
SPEAKER_01Batman t-shirts, yeah. There you go.
SPEAKER_05Uh all right, so Marvel comic news. I'll just go through my list here. Um, as I said, bullet points. I'll try not to go on too long about any of this. Some of it I don't know a whole lot. It's just that I think they're exciting announcements. But um, the first one I've got written here is that we're getting a new spider punk uh comic series from Cody Ziggler and uh Justin Mason. That's really exciting. Um uh yeah, uh Spider Punk's become a really popular character. Um what else have we got? Oh yeah, um Marvel um uh Marvel and Star Wars, the crossover that Kevin Smith and I think it's David David Marquez are doing. I want to I wanted to hear what you thought about this because I know I've got thoughts.
SPEAKER_01Um apparently was covers, and I and I'm still not getting an idea of what it's actually about. No one's giving us an idea of what what it's about. And and and I'm a little bit I'm a little bit confused.
SPEAKER_05I'm not I'm not I mean the premise seems pretty basic, especially if you've read something like the Muppets Take the Marvel Universe recently. I think it's gonna be pretty much the same thing just with Star Wars characters, but um the the the the the bit the bit of news that I found most interesting was um that they confirmed that it's apparently gonna be canon to the Marvel universe, so the main Marvel universe. And and that kind of boggles my mind. Like uh uh well, what does that mean? Like if it's canon to the main Marvel universe, what does that mean? What does that mean to the main Star Wars universe? Is it canon to that or not? Is like if can it be canon in one and not canon in the other? Or I don't understand.
SPEAKER_01As as they say on the on the game show, no deal.
SPEAKER_05You're not a fan of that?
SPEAKER_01No, no, I'm not just like I mean, look, we live in a wonderful age where we can do these crossovers, right? Where DC and Marvel will do a crossover, where we have some fun and and we'll get a Star Trek and something or else crossover. And um I mean look, it's fun to do, but then to start saying, Oh, it's going to be canon. No, no, like I'm sorry, but but I I can't I don't see anybody beating Darth Vader. I mean, I just can't see the Hulk taking out Darth Vader like on that cover. I mean, Vader is way too strong, he's way too powerful. I mean, he pulled he pulled a a Star Destroyer, I mean, back in in was it a Star Destroyer or it was something anyway.
SPEAKER_05It was a it was a very no, it was a very large transport in the Obi-Wan and Obi show.
SPEAKER_01That's right, that's right. So very cool. You know, what hope do you have against you know the the the the strongest force wielder in the in the in on you know in the in the galaxy?
SPEAKER_05I just don't I don't yeah. I just thought it was funny. Like I yeah, I just thought it was funny. I thought it was a really interesting thing for them to say because they they didn't they didn't have to say that like stupid. It was it does it does seem a little bit stupid to to say it because I feel like it opens a whole can of worms, but um more tickle boxes.
SPEAKER_01All singing.
SPEAKER_05Look, unless it's like an episode of the new the rebooted Muppet show, I'm not interested in that either. But if it is if it is an episode of the rebooted Muppet Show and it's like a mashup of Star Wars and Marvel, that's easy.
SPEAKER_01That's easy, right? Like we we've already talked about the Muppet Show and how they can bring all that sort of stuff back. But anyway, Mark Hamill and Robert Downey Jr.
SPEAKER_05tap dancing together. Um we digress, we do do digress. Although just last thing on that is I I saw a soundbite today from the the panel at New York Comic Con for the Marvel X Star Wars series, and um I think it was Kevin, oh Kevin Smith. He said he said they had some really interesting discussions at meetings, and this one really piqued my interest. He said one of them was about whether um a lightsaber could cut through adamantium, and I'm dying to see what the the result of those conversations is in the actual book.
SPEAKER_01Adamantium.
SPEAKER_05Nay's thinking.
SPEAKER_01Sciencey, sciencey, yeah.
SPEAKER_05So I'm dying to know where you know um Beskar. Yeah, well, bet yeah, Beskar, Vibranium, Adamantium, lightsabers, all of that sort of stuff. Uh part of me wonders whether that might be one of the links between the stories, whether they'll make adamantium and vibranium. No, sorry, adamantium and beskar the same substance. Like but best beskar's the Star Wars version, and yeah, okay, go check. So if that is a thing, I want some sort of a uh sticker or gold star or something.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, okay. We'll we'll go back and we'll remind everybody of this episode when it when it when it comes out. Yes, please. Did you um we were talking about Spider-Man before? Did you see the other announcement about Spider-Man Noir?
SPEAKER_05Uh about getting uh his own series, yes. I did see that.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, did you see who was going to be in it?
SPEAKER_05No, I didn't.
SPEAKER_01Um tell us we're getting a venom no uh noir venom.
SPEAKER_05Okay.
SPEAKER_01Which I find really fascinating. I'm really interested to see what that looks like, what that take looks like.
SPEAKER_05For me, the vet venom is a very 90s looking character, so maybe it's the 1890s.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I don't know. But um, yeah, I'm I'm I'm looking forward to seeing that. That's in February, I believe it's coming out.
SPEAKER_05Okay, yeah, no, that'd be interesting to see, but yeah, it does fall a little bit flat now that they've cancelled um the television series that we're all enjoying so much. Um more Marvel Comic News, just quickly. Um uh Magneto's getting a new series, Magneto End of Days, um, which apparently ducks in and out of uh key moments in Magneto's um uh uh timeline, his history. Um interestingly to me though, that's written by Brian Michael Bendis, uh, with uh uh drawing uh art. Don't know why I've suddenly forgotten those words, uh, by Andrea Sorentino. Um uh so that that that's one to watch. Um, yeah, Bendis is always always um worth a watch. Yep. Um back to Spider-Man as well. There's a um an amazing Spider-Man and Miles Morales event, uh Crisis of Faith coming out from Joe Kelly and Brian Hill this one. It sounds like it's a uh sort of a crossover between the two titles. So um that'll be interesting. They're always good value together, the two Spidies.
SPEAKER_02Yep.
SPEAKER_05Um, and that's so I think that's all I've got for Marvel. Much of the rest of the news that I've got is uh either DC or other publishers.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, okay. Well let's um let's let's go on to uh on to DC, shall we? Um okay. We're getting yeah, we've got we've to the to the light side apparently.
SPEAKER_05That's what you said. I they weren't my words.
SPEAKER_01I said, yeah, yeah, yep. Yep, no more hog raging. Now it's all now it's all uh Nightwing and and and Teen Titans.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, Teen Nightwing raging.
SPEAKER_01No Nightwing Raging here, yeah. Um okay, so probably one of your favourites, Starfires, getting a series.
SPEAKER_05Yes, uh, yes, correct. Um I'm particularly excited about that one. Um, written by Alyssa Wong and with art by um one of our new newer favorites, Belen Ortega. Um I don't know whether you're familiar with Belen Ortega's art, but um she's been doing quite a bit with Tom King on um uh Trinity, the Wonder Woman, uh the daughter of Wonder Woman and some Wonder Woman stuff, um, as well as a bit of Catwoman, I think. Um and yeah, a big fan. So uh I think that'll be a really good fit for Starfire. I'm I'm excited about that series.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, and and the art and the artwork looks great.
SPEAKER_05So um yeah, just uh yeah, and I'm a big, big, big fan of Bell and Ortega's art, and like for anyone that wants to have a look, I'd suggest Googling the um the Trinity. They they started out as like supplemental stories in the back of Tom King's Wonder Woman series, and then they combined them into a special. Um uh it was uh uh yeah, all together. And then the um the artwork was by Bell and Ortega, and it was really delightful. Um co-starred uh Superman, um John Kent and Damien Wayne. Um, yeah, really good stuff. So yeah, I'm looking forward to that. Uh, do love, do love Starfire. I've been waiting a little while for uh another solo series for her.
SPEAKER_01Yep. Uh what what what else you got on your list there for DC?
SPEAKER_05For DC. Um well the big one, I guess. I mean, we can tackle that straight off the bat is absolute justice. Um uh Jason, Jason Aaron and Juan Ferreira. Um starting in April 2027. Um yeah, there's a lot of hype around that one. They released a trailer and everything.
SPEAKER_01Um we did call it. We call we called that it was gonna be Martian Manhunter that was gonna group them all together. And way back in a very, very early episode when when it was announced that we would eventually get a um what's the what's it what's it gonna be called again? What's uh what are they calling it? Absolute justice. Absolute absolute justice, right? I still wonder whether you're right and they're gonna be called the the League of Doom.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I'm not sure. I I don't know. Um maybe they won't, maybe they'll be so cool they won't have a name. Oh they'll be just the the the cool kids or something like that.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, okay. The Justice Gang.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. John Jones snack pack. Um Yeah, no, I'm I um excited about that, and I'm excited that um Martian Manhunt is gonna be uh front and center as uh demon demonstrated by the uh uh promotional art. I don't know, I was gonna say cover art, but we don't know whether that's gonna be the front cover or not.
SPEAKER_01But kind of felt like cover art, didn't it?
SPEAKER_05It did, yeah. Um, but uh yeah, no, I I feel like I'd heard one of the writers or one of the creators, whether it was Snyder or someone at one stage saying that Martian Manhunter was gonna be central to that event. And um uh yeah, as you say, it looks like we were right. So that's um that's exciting.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, absolutely. Um yeah, I'm looking forward to that. What about your thoughts on um the new addition to uh the uh the Legion?
SPEAKER_05Uh re refresh my memory. What's the what's the new addition to the Legion?
SPEAKER_01To um it what's it what's the what's the comic called? Is it League League of Legends or what is it um with uh Legion of Superheroes? Legion of Superheroes.
SPEAKER_03Oh Legion of Superheroes, League of Legends.
SPEAKER_01League of Legends. Well, I don't know where I was going with that one. Um yeah, I'm not sure. So Legion of Superheroes, the new addition to the Legion of Superheroes.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I've I've heard about Batland, but I haven't sort of seen too much.
SPEAKER_01Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_05Um this is another one of those situations where like I'm I'm locked in as a Legion fan anyway. So um when there when there when there is more news, like there was some stuff about Matarita lad floating around today, and um I sort of didn't have much of a look at that either because I'm happy to wait until I read it in the comic. But um no, I'm excited about uh uh Bat Lad. I don't know what the the deal is with that character or anything like that, but I have enjoyed. I I feel like I might have seen something a while ago, but I no, I don't know whether I've seen the image you're talking about.
SPEAKER_01So so he's so he looks like Robin, um but instead of the R, he's got the bat symbol. Okay, and and his mask is black, so um which is like the ro like Robin's original mask. Um and then he's got this Batman figure behind him. It's shadow, it's like shadow of the bat, I think they're referring to him as. So he's like a like a like an all-encompassing, you know, um like a bodyguard or something. Like like almost like the Dementors, you know, like he's like this big, sort of shadowy, frightening sort of figure in the yeah, like a like a guardian.
SPEAKER_05Like a guardian angel sort of thing.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. No, I've no, I haven't seen that. Remember that comic book series by Dale Queon? Uh and no, it was like a it was like the it was like his version of the Hulk. It was back in the 90s, it was an image book. Um it was kind of like the Hulk, and he was like the protector of this like 10-year-old boy. It's a comic.
SPEAKER_05I've got a vague recollection of it, but I I don't remember all that well though.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Um, so so yeah, it kind of looks like he's a protector or a guardian, like you're saying. So like an AI type thing, or no, or a ghost, or no, it doesn't seem to be. So yeah.
SPEAKER_05Is this um uh it do you know if this is for Legion of Superheroes number two that's due out this week, or is it for uh uh subsequent issues?
SPEAKER_01Three or four.
SPEAKER_05Okay.
SPEAKER_01Three or four, I think it is, something like that.
SPEAKER_05All right, more stuff to look forward to.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, uh, yeah, uh I just looked it up. Uh it'll be in four. Do you do you want to see what the do you want to want or do you want to see what the cover looks like?
SPEAKER_05Are you able to bring it up for our viewers or are you just gonna just show me?
SPEAKER_01Let's keep talking and I'll I'll quickly just uh I'll jump online and I'll quickly well uh how about another little bit of Batman news?
SPEAKER_05Um uh I've got written here that uh absolute Batman, the animated series, is gonna be 2D animation.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, which which I actually like. I like the idea of this. I don't think we need a 3D animated um I I I I I I think this kind of suits the traditional approach rather than a 3D and get lost in buildings and you know gadgets and all that sort of stuff, like 3D. I agree.
SPEAKER_05I also I I think it sort of um uh suits the the anime manga kind of vibe that we've got going with the um absolute Batman title as well. So I was pleased to hear that.
SPEAKER_01Um yeah, I I agree. I 100% agree with you on that one.
SPEAKER_05All right, nice. Um uh more Batman news while you fiddle around with your knobs. Um uh Batman Justice Year, um, uh a new series coming from uh Jason Aaron, writer, and Bruno Redondo on the art. I didn't stuff it up that time. Um uh I'm really excited about this one. I saw some really great character uh designs by by Bruno. Yes. Um Bruno, of course, we know from uh Tom Taylor's uh famous run on Nightwing. Um some uh amazing, groundbreaking, spectacular art from Bruno on that one. So it's gonna be really good to see him back doing some some big characters in in the DCU.
SPEAKER_01Yep, 100% totally agree. Here's the image, here's your image.
SPEAKER_04Oh my god, okay. All right.
SPEAKER_01So it looks like venom. Kind of like a like a wraith or a dementor, or yeah, yeah. It's kind of like a slowy ghost thing sort of approach.
SPEAKER_04That's very cool.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, all right, okay. Yeah, I'm down. I think I I think I was saying, and then I cut myself off, but I really like the uh when they have sort of um reflections of the 20th century heroes in the Legion of Superheroes. Um like uh the the version of Dr. Fate that uh Brian Michael Bendis introduced and Gold Lantern. Um I really like that. So um, yeah, no, that's that's a really, really fun addition. Um uh more DC news. I'll just keep whipping through. I've still got a few more uh points of uh of of news. Um yeah, there's a new Swamp Thing series, Hello Ground, coming out. I don't know anything more than that, other than the title, but I'm excited about that. I've really been getting into my Swamp Thing over the last couple of years. Um, Justice League versus Godzilla versus Kong 3 is coming out. Um I dropped off those. Um I I have to admit, the I was finding some of the visual aspects of that a little bit underwhelming.
SPEAKER_01Um so and it's been very consistent in in coming out too, hasn't it?
SPEAKER_05So yeah, uh I think so, yeah. Um but there'll be a lot of people really excited about that. I'm glad that they're continuing it. I'm glad that they've obviously been successful enough to have three series, but um, yeah, that's that's coming. And um also I don't know much about this one either, but I don't need to know much about this. But apparently Tom King and Mitch Gerards, um, the longtime uh collaborators on things like Mr. Miracle um and uh various Batman projects um are doing a Superman book. Um, I'm not sure whether it's the main Superman book uh or whether it's a uh a separate title, but um I'm really excited that those two are getting together and and working on Superman again. I like the stuff that Tom King's done previously with with Superman. Um and yeah, so that that was exciting to me as well.
SPEAKER_01Um he gets and he gets Superman, right? He gets he gets the whole he gets him 100% gets him, you know. He does like Tom Taylor, Tom Taylor got got Superman, he understood him.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, his treatment of Superman um is the perfect argument to any of those people that say that they don't find Superman interesting because he's too powerful.
SPEAKER_01Um yeah, Tom Tom King really that's not that's not what makes Superman interesting, right? It's it's it's it's his um it's him being a human, you know.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, it's his it's his humanity and the and the and the the frailties that come along with that. So um yeah, no, I'm I'm really excited to see what um the lads have got in store there. Um the last bit of DC news I had uh is uh that there's a new um static shop series, a new static series coming. um from uh cody ziggler and artist uh diego ortigie i'm probably getting his name wrong um but i'm a really big fan of of of the art from diego um diego's been doing art on uh jsa um and i'm a big fan of it so um and it'll be a really good fit for static too so um yeah i'm really excited about that especially as as i've just gotten into um reading some of the uh milestone static uh adjacent stuff so and he's just joined team is he joined teen titans is that right he's joined the new titans yeah oh the new titans important in no that's all right it's just important to clarify that at the moment because we do have two teams going we have teen titans as well at the same time don't we so yeah but he's on the he's on the new titan new new titans with um uh john kent and nightwing and uh friends what's what's what's your take on superboy prime special uh i'm excited about that yeah because i think it's dan more again um i think it's with dan more art and i really enjoyed those issues of um you like superman breaking the fourth wall don't you well i i i i never used to i i didn't think that i did um but the way that they used it in those um uh superman uh super sorry superboy prime stories in in superman I thought was really um effective um and and uh rev reverential um to to pass stuff and um I just thought it was really creative so um because that's what they're gonna do what that's what the special's about isn't it so I hope so um yeah no uh bring it on the it's uh well I I've got the I've got the synopsis here it says a a new meta narrative story where Superboy Prime returns home knowing DC characters are fictional in his world okay yeah so no bring it on that's I'm on my list yeah I'm not too I'm not too sure about meta stories I I kind of like like them you know being have did you read any of the did you read any of that superboy prime stuff?
SPEAKER_01I started to and then I just I just didn't like I don't I don't like breaking the fourth I I originally when I started reading Daredevil went way back when Joe Kelly was writing um he didn't break the fourth wall like it was he did he didn't do it. And then somewhere along the line somebody got the idea where he would talk to camera um and you know and when I say talk to camera you know breaking the fourth wall and talking to the audience. And that's when I that's when I was out I was out after that I just didn't didn't like where it was going and I just I don't know it's just not one of my one of my things.
SPEAKER_05I can understand getting frustrated with them when they do it sort of haphazardly but because they've always been so sort of open about how that's a an aspect of superboy's existence in yeah when he's when he's in our DC universe um you know I've I've I've enjoyed it. Well I'm glad you I'm glad you'll like it that's good that's nice um what else you got uh for for sound sarcastic but it did no it was I was it was funny how pissed off you were sounding um no not at all I I liked it it's uh it was energizing for me um uh so so uh any more uh DC news you mean or just in in general just in general what uh where did you have any other comic news worth uh a little bit and I wanted to get your I wanted to get your opinion on these ones because these are let they be your jam um we've got a couple of I don't know whether I'm assuming that they're energy on universe titles but um we've got Transformers Bumblebee Lost Planet um yeah which is a skybound visions uh title or one shot or something um and also G.I. Joe the island of Dr.
SPEAKER_01Mindbender which is also a skybound I actually I think I sent this one to you um earlier uh probably after it was announced and this this kind of fascinates me this one um yeah why is that because we know that we know that we know that in the skybound books that Dr. Mindbender is is a real n nutcase and he's he's trying to push the boundaries of science and um it doesn't really matter about about you know whether people are tortured or killed or whatever so that he can you know create the ultimate weapon. And we've already seen what he what he's what he's capable of doing with with with Energon and um having these construct these Energon constructs that can be produced. So um I'm kind of fascinated to see what this is going to be like because I and and I I I suppose they're going along the lines of you know the island of Dr. Moreau so um it this does seem to be the reference they're making yeah yeah and and and and I I feel like I feel like the um I I I feel like this could be sort of their borderline horror book if you know what I mean. Where they're getting a little bit more gritty and graphic and um I mean not that you know GIJ hasn't been gritty and graphic or Transformers hasn't been or you know some of the other books that they've been doing. But yeah this this one just sort of feels like it this could be sort of their you know archie afterlife sort of type style book if you know what I mean.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I I don't know as much about it as as you do but I didn't get that impression it just looks like it's going to be sort of a um some sort of a spin off they're stuck on it well I mean did you see the visual of one of the one of the characters who loses their arm or hand or something or other I don't know I think I just saw that it looked like cover art for the um the mind bender one.
SPEAKER_05Okay yeah we're sorry go on I was just gonna say the mindbender one they they they did show a couple of panels and one of them was quite graphic so okay well there's been some pretty graphic stuff in in the Energon titles as it is like yeah absolutely we've had yeah Transformers squishing dudes like blueberries and um you know juke properly messed up drinking the Energon from a dead Decepticon yeah no it was uh messed up um so yeah and I'm not sure but uh um yeah I'm excited for those I've been enjoying the energon stuff so yeah I'll yeah um I'll be down for those ones as well um that's all I've got for comic news yeah yep should we um well I mean we've been going for quite a while now should we uh should we go to a quick break and um and then we'll come back with a segment we haven't a new seg a new segment I don't know anyway we'll come back after this um I think we deserve a commercial break and I think we deserve um I think we deserve some cereal let's get to let's let's let's have some cereal now it's here the excitement the adventure of a new fort welcome to we have new to the we will welcome to actually I just say um if I had to choose between those two cereals I'd be going the Batman one every day of the week yeah uh to eat I would go the Batman one um and I have to say the the the Batman the box design is spectacular but um I honestly reckon that C3PO's box is the best looking cereal box ever but it's just Cheerios that's all it is I don't care what it is I'm talking about no I'm just talking about the design of the box like I'd no i'd absolutely I'd absolutely go the Batman one too it's chocolate it's marshmallows delicious um that's you've got you've got two two two food groups right there your chocolate and your marshmallow group yep 100 all right let's get into new segment old segment not too sure but we'll call it for now it's the same old segment we're just doing something slightly different okay all right are we still calling it the Mossaizu mailbag yeah are you not coping with you're not coping with the being a little bit flexible with this are you you old fella like this is a bit it's putting you outside your comfort in change management I should probably be able to deal with it oh do you I do it doesn't show you a bit like it's you you're you're striking me a bit like no it's a bit like um the the news reader on your favorite like five o'clock news on the television's changed without any warning and and you're all disgruntled about it that's what that's what's coming across as you've got that sort of energy get my gun out and fire at the at the TV screen like in the Simpsons. Jeez wow that level up didn't it boy oh boy talking about level up loss as we mailbag I am excited about what what you're about to to do because well I think I mentioned yeah I think I mentioned last week that uh like I'm I'm starting to run out of the um the return of the Jedi magazines and the Star Wars magazines that I've I've got a bunch of so yeah um the the the days are a little bit numbered there so I'm not exactly sure whether we'll have my mailbag into the future which I know is a terrifying prospect but um this week I came across something when I was um I was doing research for my my latest episode of the Titans Tower reading nook which will hopefully be coming out sometime later this week um uh and that that episode is going to be about this comic that I got from uh Batman day at all star comics um that's um Batman number 408 from June 1987 is is that um is that uh is that who's that is that Todd or is that um it's it's the it's the debut of Jason Todd um this is the one yeah this is the one where uh Batman famously um uh discovers uh Jason Todd stealing the the tires off the Batmobile um a particularly yeah if you if you'll remember it's a particular particularly 80s like night rider looking Batmobile as well oh yeah for sure very very Corvette looking isn't it so yeah exactly um so that that that was why I bought it but um uh I decided to read that this week um for the Titan's tower reading book so I'll I'll talk about all of the the the comic book itself later but um as I got to the end um you know as we know uh we we still get them sometimes these days I think they're making a bit of a comeback but letter columns in the back of um uh comic magazines used to be um a particularly big feature back in the day before the internet before you know when we sort of couldn't you know text each other and uh you know abuse each other on Twitter about um our theories on um you know which Star Lord jacket was the best or I don't know what people argue about on the internet. And and I was having a look at this one and and and back in the 80s the the um letter column in Batman was called Bat Signals. Yeah that's a good that's a good title I like that yeah but as I was reading this one um I realized that all of the letters in this were about a previous issue of Batman that had come out presumably a month month and a half before and it just happened to be what's become one of the most iconic uh Batman stories of all time uh Batman Year One so the letters are all in reference to the very first part of Batman year one so it's like the first impressions that people had in 1987 of of this iconic story that now you know I know at all Star Comics we sell it probably a copy every day um you know all these years later so I just thought it'd be interesting to have a look at some of the letters in here because another thing that um uh I was reminded reading through some of these letters is that back in the day they didn't always just print the ones that were positive um they print the negative ones too and and um I thought that was really fun so uh yeah today on uh Moss Isley mailbag uh crime alley mailbag Arkham Asylum mailbag um uh Wayne Manham mailbag um uh Dr. Um I won't keep going on um I was gonna try and keep going until you rolled your eyes but um you're such a patient sorry I I I glossed over probably yeah I thought you got gone to sleep. Uh yeah so I'm just gonna read I'm just gonna read a couple of letters uh from the uh letter column of Bat Signals uh from uh Batman in 1987 so um here's the first one uh dear Frank Miller um I was thrilled to learn you were going to take over the Batman comic for a while but now I question your choice of material I'm sure I many when I say tampering with an origin as firmly planted in comic book law as that of the Batman is almost blasphemous. I could deal with flashes in Dark Knight but this creating new characters and situations to further dramatize a sequence of events we know and love and don't want altered this is unnecessary. I don't like the ambiguous time period television's present when they shouldn't be I'm sure I'll be happier once Batman comes into action but this is more experimental material the stuff of another special or graphic novel. That's from Eric Shoag from Boston Massachusetts aka the comic book guy from The Simpsons worst comic ever well he wasn't happy but um there's there's even even even like if he's disgruntled there's even more mega gruntled people maybe coming so um yeah I'll quickly go into another one I don't want this to uh as long as our our zest today um dear Gothamites here is the Batman we loved in Dark Knight in part one Lieutenant Gordon is more fearsome than the Batman himself if that's possible. His treatment of Detective Flask was horrendous just desserts or not this was Frank Miller at his best. The terseness of Mazakelli's art with Lewis washed out browns and greys creates the starkness and dates the story in just the way I've always envisioned the Batman's beginning. Oh I love the logo alteration too who's responsible thank you for this fine story and the ones in the 16 other DC magazines that I await monthly and interestingly this letter is from someone called Clark Kent from Tucson Arizona oh Clark Kent yeah do you think that's it there's bound to be some out there isn't there yes it's an alias it's actually um Todd McFarlane could be could be uh all right uh on to the next letter uh dear gentlemen I'm just writing to inform you in case you don't already know that the artwork for Batman year one part one was atrocious you should be ashamed of yourselves for releasing such trash i've seen better work uh yeah I've seen better work on Hagar the Horrible bit of a slap to Hagar the horrible there uh where do you where do you get off charging 75 cents for that bleep it's been a long time since charging 75 cents for a comic DC that's a fair question yeah um where do you get off imagine if you could see what the trade was worth now um it's been a long since I've bought a comic book and I think it will be a long time till I do so again and when I do I'll be sure to make my Marvel disgustedly Kevin Duane from a story in New York aka Rob Liefeld I'm glad you said that oh everyone was everyone was thinking it wow wasn't that a slap make mine Marvel like like like kudos to to DC for or the editor whoever put that in right like yeah right yeah because he I think he actually says he says oh I bet I bet you won't I bet I won't see this letter in your back bat signals column so I hope they had a hope they had a I hope they had a 75 cent yeah I hope they had a 75 cent bet on that they sent him a check in the mail for his 75 cents and said don't read anything else well I guess he owes them now because they did print his letter. Yeah yeah anyway yeah all right one last one on a more positive note uh to Denny to Denny Frank and David congratulations on your brilliant first issue of the Batman year one storyline the art in this issue captured the captured the grimy dark and fascinating world of Gotham as it hasn't been captured before David Mazakelli and Richmond Lewis seem to understand the combination of dark and light which is essential to this book. Great work guys keep it up however the superb art was not why I chose to make this issue my first letter to the editor since Green Lantern's famous drug issues. The story was probably Frank Miller's best use of the characters any good writer can give quirks to new and unknown characters but here were two of the most well known people in Comicdom Jim Gordon and Bruce Wayne and this story made these character that it was as if you had just met them for the first time thank you and that's from uh Horace McConnell uh from Galloway Ohio so yeah that's some of the the letters from yeah Batman number 408 June 1987 just thought it was interesting to see what some of the you know first impressions of people were back in the day of a story that um I know is very uh close to to Troy from All Stars Heart. It's his favorite um Batman story perhaps his favorite comic book story um and yeah as I said well one that we continue to sell um on a almost daily basis uh today so yeah can you can you um can you find a uh his here's here's one I I'd be interested to see what the um what the letters coming in for are are after the killing joke all right I'll get on it I'd I'd I'd I'd like to see I'd like to see what they have to say I mean if they're thinking this for year one can you imagine what they're thinking for knocking off Jace old Jace oh yeah so for not for the killing joke you mean uh uh death in the family oh death in the family sorry not killing joke uh death in the family yeah yeah all right um I've probab I've probably got uh comics with uh feedback on those letters in my archives so I'd like to uh leave it with leave it leave it with me yeah can't coming to a a f a future episode of uh the um uh the Gotham Gazette mailbag just trying out different names I thought it was uh bat mail what was it bat mail bag the bat bat mailbag yeah was that mailbag was that you that was that was producer producer kid suggested in our production meeting yeah no I would have gone with that straight off the bat but I don't want to have to pay her royalties oh okay right gotcha yep yep you already owe enough uh the understatement of the century uh should we uh should we get into a little bit of do you want to um well I mean we've talked a lot about comic news so do you want to save the aisle for next week or do you want to address comics that you want to talk about or no we can do that I'm I'm a bit behind on my reading anyway because I haven't managed to get a hold of um much of last week DC. So yeah, no, I'm I'm more than happy. More than happy to save that for next week.
SPEAKER_01All right. Sounds good. Well why don't we get into uh the review. All right. It's our first week without lanterns. So um and so that's the re that's the review.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. Perfect. Jeff's kiss. Yeah perfect. Yeah so that's that's the review moving on to uh the uh the the shout yeah yep now you watched a couple of animated series that I recommended to you in the last show I've been watching a lot of animated stuff so you watched haunted house and you watched yes I've watched the first episode of Haunted House I've watched the first two episodes of Golden Axe and I'll mention it off the bat as well I've also watched I think three or four episodes of Adventure Time side quests.
SPEAKER_01Yes yes um so I've I've been watching quite a bit of them yes I am um as I said I've it was very good like I've I've only watched I've only watched the first episode but I am I'm going to watch more um yeah I just I kind of um fell in love with um uh uh old mate uh Matthew Reese's character um I've got his name written down somewhere but um yeah no um that's the one in golden axe yeah um and so I I kind of slid into a bit more of those but um yeah no haunted house is really great there's so much going on in that animation um so much to see in the background and all that sort of stuff um it's got great potential um golden axe is very funny uh yeah yeah very very naughty um yeah Matthew Reese's character is great but the performance of all of the the main uh characters is great too so really enjoying that um yeah it's it's a they're they're both both good tips oh it's gilli uh gileas gileas gileas thunderhead or something yeah gileas thunderhead gileas thunderhead he pose yeah yeah so funny um yeah yeah yeah it's a lot of fun it's a lot of fun i the season two is now out for haunted house which I've just started watching um and it's and it's just as good as the first um season um really leaning into you know they're really you know now that they've sort of cemented what the characters who the characters are in the original in that first season we're now seeing them at their best in this in this next season so the writers are really comfortable with them and really you know it was a bit like the Simpsons you know the first season was a bit clunky and it was a little bit hard to get through um and then the second season it just it just took off um and and I think that this is the same we I'm not saying that it was clunky and was hard to get through but I just feel like the characters are really you know cemented with me cemented with the writers and we're really just enjoying each other's company now.
SPEAKER_05Yeah I think uh any uh animated series particularly one that that um is meant to be as funny as these ones are it takes a little while for the dust to settle um uh and and as you say that it's not to you know be disparaging of the earlier episodes it just means that they're different doesn't mean that they're worse um it just means that they haven't quite distilled exactly what the tone is going to be um but yeah once they do work it out um it's they really start to cook um but yeah I'm looking for looking forward to watching more how do you feel about um how do you feel about the new adventure time series I really like it yeah it's it's really good um obviously you know uh literally tonally it's it's a little bit different because the the theme song is the same but it's um performed differently the uh song over the credits is the same but it's performed differently um you know there's a different character doing the voice of um uh Finn um uh most of the other characters are voiced by the same actors but there's kind of a different I don't know just a different sort of treatment to them um it kind of like the animation sort of reminds me of Bluey um you know modern sensibility um but I really like it um you know nothing against the old show because I I love that too but this is just a nice change um uh it's a it's a different uh visual look um uh got the same sort of uh mischievous uh comedic tone um yeah I I found myself laughing out loud quite a lot um uh I feel like they've sort of ramped up the fart jokes and um it's it's it's really really fun yeah I'm I'm I'm really really enjoying it. This is more of a juvenile it's it's you know because obviously Finn's younger um Jake's more of a like you know mentor in this one sort of helping it's interesting yeah I because I don't know it's like I I saw somewhere on one of the cartoon network um accounts something they had like a a timeline of where it fits in and they had it sort of placed in between like hovering in between season one and two of the original show so I don't know whether they are younger. Yeah like I don't I would never I would never have picked that I would I would never have picked that the way it's written and the way that they've the with the the the animation style I always got the impression that it was um it was geared towards a younger Finn and you know and Jake adventures you know these side quests yeah you know that that that that was my assumption as well but I mean you know the title tended to suggest that is you know they're side quests rather than before quests they're um you know so and and everything I've seen so far sort of checks out like it it's a bit like you know regular show Lost Tapes you know that they sort of can fit in uh with with with the other stories the lost tapes was like really clear right you know we knew why we're seeing these episodes um as opposed to side quests i i was always under the impression that it was a it was a prequel series it was never going to be you know something that would be sliding in between the the seasons I think I think I mean first of all I don't think it really matters too much but I think it's more like it reminds me of um other sort of reboots of animated shows a bit uh probably like Scooby-Doo you know I mean that we've had different treatments of Scooby-Doo with different animation different voice actors different looks um but but they sort of all basically fit in the same time period I guess yeah and to me that's just more of this it's just a different treatment like it's a different it's a different flavor of pizza I guess do you know what I mean like it's um it it's it's the same ingredients but just through a slightly different cooking process um and I I really like it like I I I think it's really sweet don't get me wrong it's definitely definitely a welcome addition as I said there's there's big parts of it that have made me you know genuinely laugh out loud which is um which is nice in this day and age so um yeah no it's uh yeah I'm I'm really enjoying it um lots of fun animated stuff to watch yeah is there any any other any uh anything else you've been watching in the oh the only other thing I I must mention is um that I watched the uh season four finale of Ted Lasso.
SPEAKER_01Um oh okay so potentially again the um the final ever episode of Ted Lasso um I I guess it's as open as it was at the end of season three as to whether they'll they'll come back um but if this is where they leave it then it's all kind of wrapped up pretty nicely but um yeah really enjoyed season four of Ted Lasso um you know very different to the previous three seasons in that this was focusing on um the Lady Greyhounds um uh women's football team um uh but but uh I and producer Kim both really loved it you know it's uh definitely sort of missing a few key characters from the first three seasons but it adds a whole bunch of delightful um new ones um uh played by uh a whole lot of actresses uh that we had never seen before but also some that we had in other shows um there's a couple of favorites in there a couple of uh recent favourites in there um but yeah I really loved uh Ted Lasso and and they're really uh happy with the way that season four wrapped up yeah nice did you have you watched silo the end of the silo season yet or are you holding off we have and we have watched the end of we have have watched the end of uh silo yes as well how'd you how'd you feel I think I mentioned that last week I think I think I talked about silo last week I can't remember I could no no I could be no I could be why I didn't have it written down here but yeah no uh we can talk about it again um yeah no love the the the end of of uh the season season three wasn't it yeah um get I'm getting confused uh because of Ted Ted Lasso but yeah no really uh fascinated with how that one ended and and um that last episode was uh yeah gut wrenching so um yeah really looking forward to seeing um uh how it all coalesces and I mean that in a storytelling sense um yeah uh yeah next next season I'm really looking forward to so um I watched a new TV series which has just come out on Prime Video not a sponsor but should be um and because we're in the Halloween season it seems prompt that we're gonna be starting to get a few you know horror TV series coming through the ranks um in a couple of weeks we're getting Crystal Lake which will be um the prequel sort of prequelish series to the Friday the 13th um but uh what got launched uh this week is uh Carrie the TV series um which is uh based on the uh Stephen King novel of the same name Carrie um and this is I've seen one two two uh episodes so far um it's all dropped um simultaneously on um on on on Prime uh and it stars um summer H Howell um and has um one of your favorite actresses um amber mid thunder um who was in um prey um we've got Matthew in um also in uh Legion FX's um legion correct yes yeah she was in legion um and um we've also got Heather Graham in it Katie Sakoff um so there's some really sort of you know big names that are are um uh sit sitting inside of um this series and it's I you know I have my reservations about this because with the trailer I kind of looked at it and went well you know it's it's this is going to be some really difficult content when it comes to bullying and the you know the the the subject matter around that and um you know it can be quite you know confronting some of these bullying scenes um yeah but what it what it actually has done is it's it's even even the most awful of the characters that you've got in the in in the two episodes that I've seen to an extent you're kind of one minute you're feeling sorry for them and then the next minute you're thinking that they're a sociopath so um you know it really sort of gets you thinking are you know are they products of their environment are they are they um you know is it is it something that they're bringing on themselves you know by by causing the trouble because if you know the care the story of Carrie you know that it's not going to end well for a lot of the the the the people that were mean to her right um but there's something in this that's different from the movie and and I I don't want to say anything yet but but when you watch the series and I I highly recommend it it's really well acted um it's it the story carries really really quickly there's a a level of supernatural there it's not horrific you know it's not like it okay I'm gonna I'll probably put that as a caveat for you um it's not like it it's not it's not gruesome and all the rest of it this is more of a thriller-esque um you know we're we're and and and I I would say that with each episode you watch you're building up to something big you know something big is coming um and so that's what it that's sort of you know we're on that roller coaster going up and up and up and up and up and then we'll get to the top which will be the second last episode and then we're it's all downhill and thrills from there. But um it's not a slow burn. This is a really nice um well rounded you know two episodes that I've seen there's there are some supernatural scenes in it which are quite quite cool. And yeah I'm pleasantly surprised I'm I I really am I I I put it on and you know producer Mandy watched it and yeah she was asking all sorts of questions in seas in episode two because she didn't watch the first one um and she kind of got got drawn into it too and um but it just it just shows that even the even the mean you know even the means um they they are in a way the way that they are because of you know their environments right but they but then you know on the spin of it it's like well you're not doing anything to help yourself to feel better other than to make others feel awful and so that's that's what I'm really liking is that sort of that juxtapositioning of of of just one minute when you're feeling sorry for them the next minute you you change your mind about them again you know um I I I think I think the two standouts um is some H um how she's amazing. I I I didn't realise how old she was she I she's 24 years old and she's playing 10 years or younger and I I I would never not not even know that. You know it's not like 90210 where they're where they're you know having to shave halfway through a shoot um so um to to to look like they're 15. This is like 100% genuine and um Amber you know mid thunder she is just awesome in this she I don't know there's something about her presence um that she just kind of she just overshadows everybody else you know she she's an she's an amazing she's an amazing actress yeah she's just got a presence about her and and I I'm really enjoying her in in this you know if you didn't have um Carrie you know the character Carrie in this and she was just in it she'd be hands down the lead but these seem to these two seem to be sort of you know sharing the space really well with each other and separately um the storytelling is very much coming from different angles of characters we're not just getting a a single story from Carrie we've got some background story of our other characters our ensemble casts which are all leading up to the the final which is which is great um and I think that that's what's making it making it a fun watch so um I've got I think it's eight episodes so I've got six more to go um but yeah it's it's a high recommendation for me for um for Carrie that's for sure if you're a horror fan you're Stephen King fan um if you're you know one of those um actors that are that are in the TV series then do yourself a favor watch it it's fun yeah I've I've only heard little bits and pieces um from some of my like mutuals on social media and stuff and but it's all sounded very positive so um I'm glad you're in enjoying that um it's only a mini series amber mid thunder amber mid thunder what's that it's only a mini series too so it's classified as a how many how many episodes is it uh eight I think it's eight if I remember rightly yeah yeah no well amber mid thunder is almost enough to get me to watch it so um maybe I'll have to check it out like I said I don't look it's it's it's not I'm not taking you down the path of it which you haven't watched the rest of it yet have you so uh not not not yet yet yet being the operative word not yet being the operating word eight episodes it is so um yeah so um yeah but like I said it's an easy watch it's a it's an easy watch and you don't have to watch it at you can watch it at night time and not not not be scared.
SPEAKER_05Beautiful all right um anything else that you want to talk about that we've been watching uh no um the only other thing I wanted to mention like this is not something I've been watching recently but um uh when I was on my way out to the make festival on Sunday um I bumped into one of our listeners and a uh customer at All Star um Andy um and uh we were talking about all things comics and make festival and all that sort of stuff and she mentioned to me that um she'd been watching um on Disney Plus I didn't realise it had dropped on Disney Plus but they've dropped every season of The Walking Dead on on Disney Plus um so she's been binging that she'd never watched she'd never watched any before um and I just thought that was worth a mention because um you know we love a a good you know binge of a series that we've got the whole lot um and in terms of genre stuff um I just thought that that was quite big news that uh Disney Plus has got uh what is it all 11 seasons of The Walking Dead the original series um have all dropped on on Disney Plus I just thought that was quite big news so um I just wanted to yeah say thanks to Andy for letting uh me know about that because yeah uh I think that's really exciting. Um one of my favorite shows uh one that I've still got uh maybe a season and a little bit to to to watch um but uh now I know that I can just jump on uh Disney Plus and watch the whole thing. Um I think that's really exciting especially for people who haven't watched it at all because um in terms of genre stuff and uh you know horror and being a a thriller type show that you could that's really binge worthy um I think you'll agree with me that the Walking Dead's you know top tier. So yeah I just thought that was really um awesome news and I just wanted to mention that before before we stopped talking about TV.
SPEAKER_01That's that's that's that's being like a real quiet quiet um addition to to Disney Plus is no promotion. I had no idea.
SPEAKER_05I put Disney Plus on for I think I would turning on to ESPN or something and so I was using it for that and and sure enough Darrell Dixon popped up on my screen and and and it was showing me that the that it was all there. But um yeah no I was really grateful to to Andy for for telling me about that one because um well it's also an AMC production so so Disney must be must be uh renting renting it for a while then I'd say I guess yeah uh for what whatever the reason is um I don't really care from but from you know a viewer's perspective I just think it's a really good opportunity for people to get on and you know if you're looking for something you know really uh high you know high quality storytelling um with a great cast and um you know uh pretty good production values as well I think um yeah you should watch welcome to dairy yeah and once you're finished with that um you go and watch the Walking Dead just as a bit of a calm down you know because it'll bit of a comfort TV series yeah that's right yeah just uh like a uh televisual hug a de stress a de stress before sleep yeah no no no no jump scares in the walking dead no none at all zero zero nobody loses an arm um all right let's uh let's have a quick break we're gonna come back we're gonna talk a little bit about the make festival uh and then we'll uh and then we'll wrap things up are you hungry hungry as a gremlin as a gremlin is this week the sweet hungry as a gremlin
SPEAKER_01Just quickly, I have some I have some thoughts about that ad. I I don't think that they were allowed to use anything to do with the TV with the TV, uh with the film. Would you agree?
SPEAKER_05Oh Gizmo is there.
SPEAKER_01Gizmo wasn't talking in his voice. Um what was the deal with the kids losing their ears? What was the deal with kids losing their ears, like gaining Gizmo ears and then losing ears when they ate the cereal?
SPEAKER_05Well, I guess uh it in modern Palence they'd be they must have been hangry, and so the ears were representative of the fact that they were hangry, and then when they had the their gremlin cereal, their ears disappeared. So they weren't hungry anymore.
SPEAKER_01So here's the marketing hat of me.
SPEAKER_05That's a that's a medical that's a medical diagnosis. Sorry. It's a you know medical diagram.
SPEAKER_01Drag drag us drag us into side. You are a doctor of trailers, so you know you can prescribe.
SPEAKER_05I am I've got a certificate. I've got a certificate. I can't show you, but I've got a certificate.
SPEAKER_01Yep, yep. Um the other the other thing I they missed it. They had a full missed opportunity there about saying um uh about not eating after midnight, you know, like they had an opportunity to say that.
SPEAKER_05And I think that was it was I think that was I think it was irresponsible. I think they they should have said that.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I just it was very jarring that that that uh that ad for me.
SPEAKER_05It wasn't as um appetizing as C3POs or Batman returns.
SPEAKER_01No, definitely not. At least they were uh at least they were keeping with the with the with the theme of it. This just felt like uh let's you know we've we've got the we've got the brand of the mugwai, let's slap him on a box and and make something up. But uh anyway.
SPEAKER_05Um what happens if you get milk on a gremlin? Like if you get water on a gremlin, they multiply it.
SPEAKER_01Well it says don't get them wet, right?
SPEAKER_05Don't get them wet, so yeah, it's the same the same thing.
SPEAKER_01I wonder if you can get like a have we have we talked about have we talked about my my my thing about gremlins getting them wet? Have I have I have we talked about this? So what I want to know is in the in the first episode in the first um film they're out in the snow the whole time.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_05So if we're using science here's not snow's not always like it's not wet as such.
SPEAKER_01So when it's snowing on them and it melts.
SPEAKER_05Well it probably dries up really quick before it gets there, it gets into gets into their flesh. Probably dries on their the ends of their hairs, you know. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I'm a doctor of trailers.
SPEAKER_05Don't don't come at me with your crackpot theories. I'll I'll debunk them all day.
SPEAKER_01I've got a I've got a science degree in in pop culture, so okay, all right.
SPEAKER_03Bring it.
SPEAKER_01Got a question. Yeah, just it's it's always been something that just it's ruminating in the back of my mind, you know, just before I drift off to sleep.
SPEAKER_03Um I'm not surprised at all. I'm not surprised.
SPEAKER_01I did make uh I did I did make a couple of jokes um uh at the make festival how we're going to have a um a new a new spin-off series called Couch Confessions um with comic creators. Um and uh it seems like we've got a few few people who are quite happy to uh lay on the couch and uh and uh give us their diet their um their thoughts and feelings about comics in general.
SPEAKER_05Um okay, this is new news to me, but I'm um I'm open mind open-minded as always.
SPEAKER_01Go to the production meetings and you'll know.
SPEAKER_05Um I'm way too busy.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I know you are, but I know you are I've got people for that. By which I mean you while we're you mean um while we're talking about make festival, um, why don't we talk about that uh now? Um so uh if you're if you've been uh listening or watching the show, you'd know that um uh we've been sort of um uh leading up to uh the make festival, which was the what was it called again? What's the uh was it make it Melbourne Alternative Comics Expo Comics Expo, correct. Um and uh it was over three days. Uh it was uh the uh Friday, Saturday, and Sunday just gone. And uh the last day was the creator day, um, which both you and I were there. You were working, I was not.
SPEAKER_05Uh market day, yep. Yep, um and oh no, you seem to be you seem to you seem to be working pretty hard.
SPEAKER_01Oh yeah, I was I was I was working the room and um we'll have uh an a make plus episode coming out uh later in the week uh after this, probably a couple of days after this episode drops, uh where you'll be able to listen in on uh on uh the interviews that I did with I think it was about seven creators. Um I ran out of time, to be honest, and I do apologize to anybody that may have seen me um that I didn't get to come and speak to you about. But there was I I had two hours of car parking and not enough time to talk to everybody.
SPEAKER_05So um I just the local local council's fault, Nate, not yours.
SPEAKER_01100% the local, the the shire of whoever. Um it's your fault. So um uh I blame probably you for probably Kensington, I would say. Whoever it is, up your game with your parking, give us longer time, thanks. Um, but yeah, so so yeah, it's about seven creators, but um really some really great, great um, you know, conversations there and and uh again talking about their process and um some of their challenges and also talking about um you know what what what got them into comics and I think that that's what was really really important or what their thoughts are on how to get into comics as well. So um, you know, talk to a couple of writers, talk to a couple of and and and a few um and a few artists um and and a and a and a combo of both. And um, yeah, it's it's um I I think it'll be um an enjoyable listen if um if that's uh that's your bag. So um uh so yeah, but it was a good day. I mean there was a lot of people there. Um we I spoke to um to to to B who is uh part of the the committee and also part of um Gateway and Um Comics and uh Manga and Um they were saying that uh that that they had a it was a it was a great day and a great turnout and um it and you know and and not just a great turnout from creators but a great turnout from the public. Um I I I I um you know you always get nervous for these, you know, first time around um and hope that you know the the that it's got out there enough and people are gonna support it and you know and um you know that they're gonna travel to the location and all that sort of stuff. And um uh it was great. It really was. It really felt like they were very well supported. Um it seemed like there was, I don't know about you, but I noticed quite a number of families um that were there, you know, that bring in small kids.
SPEAKER_05Um I thought it was a really um uh as uh um I guess it wasn't surprising to me, but it was a real uh cross-section of the community was there um to to observe. But um I think that was just reflective of of the you know the different types of people that we've got in the the um the comic making community in Australia as well. And that was another thing that really struck me. Um I was talking to a lot of people at a lot of tables, and there were people from all over the country. There were people that had come down from from Sydney and from uh Brisbane and across from Perth, obviously, and um the whole country was represented there. Um and I think it's safe to say that the vibe was just so positive um and so energetic, and there was so much enthusiasm in the room. Um, I was blown away. Like I was just so pleased for um for everybody on the organizing committee, um, but everyone just in the community um uh for uh the the the the amount of enthusiasm um uh and passion that was on display there. It was just um, you know, it was it was just really infectious and um it's got me even more excited for for next year's make festival, um, which which will yeah apparently be happening again. So um yeah, I'm I I am just so happy for everybody that was involved. Um, it was just a really wonderful time. Um I picked up a bunch of books um that I have still haven't really looked through. Um I lament there's a whole bunch that I didn't get that I'd love to have another opportunity to get more of. But um uh my plan is to uh review some of those books as we go forward. Like I don't want to sort of um you know drop the ball and say make festivals done. We're not gonna talk about this stuff anymore. Um I'm gonna continue to review them into the future and and want to keep the momentum going and keep the passion and enthusiasm going for um local creation because yeah, the amount of the the broad variety of stuff um from graphic novels to to zines to fiction to nonfiction, all different genres. Um it was just so inspiring um on Sunday that um I was really moved by it. I continue to be really moved by it. Um and yeah, I look forward to to continuing to talk about it down the track. And I can't wait to hear the interviews that you um you put together as well, Nate. Um uh I think that's really exciting and and I'm looking forward to that hopefully later this week.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, the you know what I you know what I really like? There was a you know, sometimes sometimes when you walk into a room, yeah, it's it's about the feel before about the observation. And I before I even walked into the actual um hall itself, I could already feel there was a positive vibe. Um and and and you know, the you know, you were greeted when you came in um from um from the from from the table off to the left. We had um you had people coming out who had books in their hand, and maybe it was an observation, but it was it definitely uh I wasn't I I maybe maybe the observation wasn't as as strong, but it but but it the the feeling was stronger in in what I was observing and and people were coming out with books in their hands and talking amongst themselves and smiling and laughing and you know uh with you know both you uh you and I we've been to cons and I and I I've been to a lot of cons in my time and I just felt that this was this was very different, even from even from these smaller festivals and expos that we've had in the past. Um this was very different. This just had a really nice, positive, comforting feel to the whole entire day. Um, we unfortunately I wasn't able to go on Friday, I wasn't able to go on Saturday because because I was um because I was moving house, but um I I I wish I had, but everything that I saw and all the feedback that I've I've read um has been nothing but positive and glowing about this community. And I think that this is something that's been lacking with our um with it with the Australian market is this um overarching sort of you know um warm blanket, you know, this comfort, these arms around creators saying, hey, let's let's do this together, you know, let's all hug it out and and and start creating some really good books and start pushing these books. And um, I don't know how many times I've read now, especially on that Sunday, where people have said, oh, thanks to this person because they helped me with this, or thanks to this person because I had this thought and I didn't know how to you know action it. And I it's I I I think that's that's a really, really good start to uh to what we've been talking about where we want more Australian independent, you know, artists and writers and letterers and you know colorists and you know just just just creating um in general.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, it's it's such a solitary solitary pursuit, um, not just making comics, but drawing and writing. And um, you know, it is it's very difficult to to get out of your own um space and and realize how much uh encouragement that there is that there is around you. And um, I think that was the bet like I keep using the word energy. Uh it was just like the energy in that room um the other day, I as I said, I was finding it quite overwhelming. Um it was just so lovely and positive and and and noisy and um, you know, happy and energetic. It was just um yeah, it was just it was it was it was such a good day, good day. And um, as I said, I really hope that we uh keep that energy rolling into the future. Um, I mean, my my role there the other day was uh to go around and try and talk to people and let them know that um they're you know they've got a place in All-Star Comics to sell their stuff. Um and I just like I give it like to give a shout out to that um again. Uh, you know, if if anybody's got any questions, getting their books on the shelves of the local section at All-Star Comics, um, you know, I I just encourage them to email uh uh All-Star directly. Um you can contact me on any of my socials if you want. So send me a DM if you've got any questions about how to get your stuff um uh uh available for people on the shelves of the local section in at All Star, just let me know. Um and likewise for uh uh be and Tom at Gateway um as well, you know, um just contact the guys and and let them know that you've finished your product, you've got it, you've got it, you you want to sell it, um, because I'm sure that they'll they'll assist you as well. Um, you know, we we just want to support each other and um keep encouraging each other into the future. It's um inspiring to think of what this might look like next year. Um I I I can't it can't can't even imagine, but the potential for what it could look like next year is is um limitless, I think.
SPEAKER_01Um I I I would like to I would like to think that um you know after some initial conversations on Sunday, um I've got a strong feeling that you and I will probably be a little bit more involved um with next year than than we were this year. So um which is which which would be um I'd be honored if that if that was the case. So um so yeah, whether that's from a pulp uh culture podcast point of view or whether that's something else, um, yeah, we'll will you know remains to be seen. But um, you know, I think that's that's also nice. Um to give you a bit of a, you know, talking about um, you know, in in you know, inclusion and and um you know the feel that that that was in the air, you know, and that energy that you're talking about. Um I'll give you a a bit of a sneak peek that um one of the uh one of the interviews that I did was with um Jordan Allen Barr. Um and some of you might um recognize that name. Um one of our very early episodes, which was the Aussie special, we uh featured uh some of his uh books, um uh the Manta series. Um and uh Jordan actually uh states that um it was because of us that he actually thought that he had a book to put in stores. So at that stage he was not actually he was he was doing sort of tabling in Perth um but he wasn't actually uh had didn't have any books in uh a um in a store like All Star, for instance. And uh when he was featured, he gained the courage. Uh he he knew that he had an opportunity to uh to to to branch out and and and start approaching stores. So that's really nice to hear too that that um that that we're able to make an impact and help people to to do that too. So um I thought that was a really nice nice comment from him.
SPEAKER_05That's amazing. Um I had I hadn't heard that. I did uh finally meet Jordan in I did finally meet Jordan in person. I was really thrilled to um to to meet him um on Sunday. And um I wish I'd had a chance to talk to him more, but um hopefully that'll happen uh in the future. But um yeah, no, that's that's uh really really lovely to hear that. And um, yeah, he most certainly does have a product that's worthy of being in stores, um as to everybody that was uh at at Make. Um yeah, no, we want we want to read your stuff, we want to see what you've done, we want to um, you know, witness the the product of your labours because um yeah what you what you've all been creating and and producing is um is magnificent and and yeah uh I look forward to celebrating it um uh going into the future.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, well definitely what this has done um for us is that um it's it's it's inspired to uh bring back Pulp Plus. We we did we did a number of episodes uh early on, um and uh this this sort of will give you a flavor of what's to come um in up and coming episodes. Um just gotta wait until I get the internet. Uh so as soon as I've got that, then we'll start rolling those uh those episodes out again. Um but we've got a great lineup of uh of local uh talent that we can talk to. Um just just from make alone. Um there's some some really good people coming um on in the pipeline to uh to to chat with. So um yeah, again, well done to everybody involved with Make. Um you did a great job, and um, you know, we salute you.
SPEAKER_03So we do.
SPEAKER_01Pop culture salute. Um for whatever that's worth. All right, we we we we tried to keep it under, but again we didn't. Uh we hope you've enjoyed this episode. Um, it's been a bit of a mixed bag with uh with um uh New York Comic Con. Uh we've had some Hulk raging uh and uh some some DC love uh and uh and and and also just uh what we've just been talking about about in the independent creation uh or creating. And um, but uh stay tuned next week when you'll hear MJ say.
SPEAKER_05This could have been an email.
SPEAKER_01It would have been a really long email. Thanks everybody, stay fresh. See you next week for 49. We're nearly at 50. See you then.
SPEAKER_03See ya.
